And here we have the last beta guardian (not counting Bec).

other character sheets:
Bro Strider
Mom Lalonde

He's probably the most controversial, since the Dad-canons differ a lot.
Made him grey/blue-ish with light brown and beige, similar to John's colour scheme, except more neutral and slightly leaned towards Jane to make him suited for both (which is probably ultra un-noticeable). I tried entirely white clothes too but that made him look like a doctor XD I think this is alright. He should look like a Dad: middle-aged, hard-working, encouraging, loving.
Despite his immense strength he is thinner and scrawnier than Bro. Having a buff or chubby Dad just doesn't feel right to me :/ Dad is and a very hairy man. Except on the scalp
Of course he has a big nose, that's the one feature we know for sure about him.

As usual, this is not an official design, just my headcanon

Very nice! Apart from the hairy arms (since canonically he's a compulsive shaver) and the interface (I had set so that his sylladex interface is customized to be a wallet instead of a wristband), I like this design!

I especially like how you showed both his jovial and his serious side; something we only see from the narrative in-comic since the adults are generally faceless.

And yes to scrawny strong people! There really are people who don't have much muscle mass yet are capable of lifting as well as a buff person. So, it's nice to have some representation here. XP

Yeah let's skip the hair. I guess I'll fulfill my hairy man-needs with the stuffed Grandpa XD
Yup, wallet it is! (I drew it in the faceless version already, imagine this one with a face and you pretty much have the Dad).

Yes! Thank!
An ordinary buisness man just looks weird with too much muscle. For Bro it's fine since it adds to the douchebag-factor but Dad shouldn't be too meaty, despite the love for cake.

Heheh, I'd like to see how you draw Grandpa. X3

Woooo! Slenderdad wallet! XD

On a more serious note, just gonna mention for future reference that the scanner is placed on the back of the wallet at the center-top edge.

I headcanon that while Bro is constantly working out and stuff (which Dirk does, so I think it's safe to assume he does too), Dad just does simple exercises every now and then and mainly lifts stuff by sheer force of will. Heck, maybe that's what Mangrit is; sheer force of will converted to strength. XP

Pot belly mustached Grandpa?

Alright, got it.

It's like Dad is the definition of fatherhood and calm manlyness and Bro is a parody of MANLYNESS *imagine me yelling the word this time*. Like an alpha male that's so clichΓ© that it's already impossible again, if that makes sense. In other words: Kamina, albeit a little less empowering. The concept works best when he is buff, otherwise he would just look pathetic and the irony would lose it's value by becoming too obvious(?)

Yes. That. That's what mangrit is. Yes.
With the power of fatherly pride he shall be unstoppable.

I'm not too sure he'd be very hairy. After all, the Cirque du Soleil filed a restraining order because he couldn't control his urge to shave the very hairy man and broke out the Barbasol. Why wouldn't it apply to himself? That may go for the eyebrows as well, though it could probably go either way.

But other than those points, this looks like a cool design!

I made a hairless + faceless version, maybe that's more suited. Thanks for the feedback!

also im happy you remembered that hes bald a lot of people forget that apparently

He would look great with hair but then it's just not Dad.

Hi, I'm a screenwriter for this project and I just want to mention that we've already decided long before we started the script (which is already complete, btw) that faceless silent guardians would REALLY not work well in an more realistic anime format. The comic could get away with silent guardians because the only dialogue visible to the viewers (at least until after Act 5) are the Pesterlogs. The reason for this is because we spoken lines generally aren't written out. But in an anime, where we can hear whatever a character says with them, having random silent characters makes so little logical sense (by which I mean none) that it'll be jarring to viewers.

Also, we're NOT doing a 100% word for word adaptation of the comic; not only would that be impossible, but it ruins the point of an adaptation. We'd lose the opportunity to do things that comic couldn't do (e.g. off-screen events, "real life" dialogue, etc.).

Besides, the episode 1 script is firmly set in stone now and contains not only dialogue for Dad (Mom and Nanna will come a little later), but also descriptions of facial expressions and "eye expressions" (e.g. "mischievous glint"). So any faceless designs will be rejected on the spot. Of course, this does not include First Guardians (who are faceless by nature; who needs eyes when you're omniscient? And who even knows how Doc Scratch talks besides telepathy or something), but they're a whole different set of characters.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a screen writer as well as animator and character designer, and work with indie studios to create films like:Β www.facebook.com/TreeofLifeOVA (wrote this)

I didn't suggest they be silent like the original, but retain the visual essence that the original provides. You can also suggest expression with a faceless character by utilizing shape, lighting, and other visual tricks. But alas, these are just suggestions from a fellow fan.

Renegade-Gryphon In reply to HIROmanga [2014-06-15 00:10:55 +0000 UTC]

And we appreciate it, but again, the decision's already made and the script is set. Besides random faceless/eyeless humans (we're trying to hook new fans too, and that would look hella weird in realistic style)Β  there are also lost opportunities for certain expressions. Like, a Kamina smirk on Bro (which I am totally planning on working in along with "Who the hell do you think I am?") and other specific expressions like winking and grinning. The facelessness worked perfectly in the comic, but on a realistic anime design...frankly, they look like like faceless aliens. I was actually a little creeped out when I looked at Elby's faceless versions (and still am). ._.

I don't doubt your abilities as a writer, designer, and animator. Heck, that OVA you're working on looks incredible so far and I'd LOVE to see it when it's released. Your designs are simply gorgeous and professional, although, the size of the wings are bothering me a bit, but that's pretty minor.

But I see the Homestuck guardians as one of those times where more major artistic license is required for the sake of the medium and for the potentials they create.

Again, I really appreciate your input and wish you the best of luck in your project.

Thanks! And I know, I was just putting in my 2 cents XD I didn't expect anything to change, not by my say anyway. Also, Bro's design is super fitting. I actually forgot he doesn't have a mouth normally.

(I think the wings change size, is what the group decided, but that's beside the point)

I totally understand. It was only a suggestion. I know that fan input can be as helpful as it is toxic. I appreciate the time you even took to look at my comment actually XD, but like i said before, on no accord do i expect the designs to change. I was just putting my opinion out there for people to read XD.Β

It's just my own personal opinion, that and the beta kids should like like they're 12 (or whatever) instead of teens. Like the kids in Dennou Coil or Digimon

Elbytron In reply to HIROmanga [2014-06-10 20:33:48 +0000 UTC]

They are canonically 13 when Homestuck begins and they are designed to look like it for the project.

Yeah I see your point but if we make one guardian that way we should make it with all and I don't know if that would end up too creepy? The featureless faces are not what they look like, it's just the perception of the kids.
