I loved this song! A lot of people hated that HoND soundtrack but...to me, it was awesome. This song and the accompanying scenes that go with it are heartwrenching. The part where she looks up at the Blessed Virgin and basically says, " Were you once an outcast too?" Yes, Jesus wasΒ

It was as dramatic as the movie that's for sure. But see, here in the states, what counts is how much MONEY a movie makes. And because HoND made a little less than 100million ( as say, compared to 300 million for the Lion King)....and wasn't very popular ( the reason I was able to collect things too is because many of the things went on sale immediately since no one was buying it...and the Disney stores quickly got rid of and panned that movie merchandise) . It made me angry that just because it wasn't as popular as other Disneyana films that it was shoved to the back corner. Esmeralda didn't even get a designer gown like the rest of the heroines and princesses in their modern day dresses on the collector series dolls. I could picture her in red sequins or something really sexy.Β
Hercules was the same way...it was even less of a money maker than HoND, and they totally panned it, the merchandise quickly going to bargain toy store dumps. Β At that point critics here called it Disney's lowest point. Then they did MULAN and somehow that managed to resurge Disney's image here. Β But around the WORLD, HoND made over 300 million, and as you can see, 17 years later, still has almost a cult-like following of really dedicated hardcore fans. I was pleasantly STUNNED when I joined these communities. I think I was fooling around and typed in Esmeralda or something and all this stuff came up!!!!

yes it is a shame - i do see like the business technique obviously cann the stuff that isnt selling but it think now that hercules and mainly HoND have the biggest cult and fanclubsever! it has become way bigger than more and im really happy for that fact!
it has grown super sucessful over the years!
and i do love Mulan , Esmeralda should have got a designer dress cause she symbolises goodness and shows no predudices - girls should look up toa figure like that and not up to people like ariel ( i do love the little mermaid)Β but she is not like showing them any lessons - just like get your own way hahaha

I got into a big tussle on another site about the word heroine versus princess. Well, it's true, Esmeralda was no real princess in that sense. But then neither was Mulan...she was the daughter of a farmer/merchant. Pocahontas' dad was chief, but not true royalty. And so forth. There just seemed to be this negativity towards Esmeralda on this one site because she was a gypsy and poor.Β

wow it is not right to discriminate gypsy (happens loads here) there is this show i dont know if u like have it in the states but its called my big fat gypsy wedding and its about gypsys who have the biggest most expensive weddigs with the biggest most ridulous dresses and i kinda feel bad for them cause they think the publicity is good and peple are interested about their weddings and culture but its made to expolit them and make fun of them liek i cant explained but if u watched it its jsut a show to laugh at them basically but i think they should be called disney heronines not princesses

YES!! I have seen that program! Actually what is interesting is HoND fueled my interest in learning about real gypsies. In the USA here we have a program called AMERICAN GYPSIES. Same thing sort of as it depicts the lives of gypsies all over the states. Β I also read the fascinating book by Isabel Fonseca called BURY ME STANDING and it told me LOADS of fascinating cultural aspects of gypsy life. They ARE very much discriminated against everywhere.Β
Yes, those dresses are like CAKE toppers. But in this book I just mentioned, they do like a lot of bling. It's a show of wealth. I honestly have to say I don't necessarily like that kind of flashiness as it seems tricked out or pimped out.Β
