Description
My humble tribute to the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11's landing, those who flew on the mission, and those who worked hard to make it possible.
---
This is something really different from my usual production...
I didn't even know where to begin with this because, apart from the fact that I'm away most of the week these times and can only work with a not-so-powerful (as far as 3D rendering is concerned) laptop, I faced a lot of challenges. I didn't have any spacecraft model and had to look for both the spacesuits and both the command-service and lunar modules. Those weren't even compatible with DAZ Studio so I had to import them into Hexagon and then adapt them through the more-or-less clever use of shading and texturing.
The lunar surface has been more difficult than I thought, fortunately I have been taught to think of everything as difficult so I can face problems with full concentration. I adapted a "sand pit" ground model, added a primitive, reshaped sphere to build a small hill, then shaded it to something that would look like the pictures of the Moon surface taken from ground level, then changed the maps.
The Earth is a sphere textured with a "Blue Marble" picture that is available from NASA's files, and the American flag is a couple of primitives shaded right. If you look closely, you will see that the Armstrong figure on the left is holding a camera, another couple of primitives I adapted to look like one of the Hasselblad cameras used for the purpose, taking pictures of Aldrin who's saluting the flag.
Yes, I know you couldn't see the Columbia from the surface... But how could I leave Michael Collins out of the picture?
I hope to see another manned Moon mission in my time. I know it's just a dream but... I would really like to fly to the Moon myself.
But if I really have to, I'll get my ass to Mars.

Its amazing that they were able to land men on the moon and return them back to earth using less technology than is now found on the cheapest mobile phones

Yes... But those computers were very robust, they never crashed, even when the lunar module computer got overloaded, it was set to give a warning and then simply leave out anything that was not necessary for the landing maneuver. It worked. I wish some modern software was that reliable, I have seen my share of crashes and blue screens and whatever.
By the way, the software development for the Apollo computers was led by a woman, Margaret Heafield Hamilton. She is the first ever "software engineer".

There is a movie called 'Hidden Figures ' which tells the story of the three women that worked for NASA's space program .. its a wonderful movie
I believe that the real truth about NASA's space program and the moon landings will never ever ever be told
Oh and its a lovely image that you've created
