Description
"The Approach of a Great Threshold" by Cody Seekins (www.codyart.tk) Oil on Canvas, 60" x 30", Original for SaleThis piece is an interstice in time and relation. It speaks on many levels of the moments before manifestation, when much of the world of perception appears as a dream. The catalyst to my inspiration for this piece in great part is my beautiful, talented, and cherished friend [link]
Once i get a professional slide made i'll update the image with something more resolved. I might even submit several closer shots for better viewing at that time. Namaste.

There were some incredibly visceral moments in the making--even to the point of inhabiting a primordial liver fluke type mentality in some portions, and more sophisticated, mammalian...glad it translates...

i do as well. As i'm prepping under somewhat of a deadline for some local shows in May, i'll probably do smaller works until then--afterward i have some real special projects planned, more intricate and powerful, experimental.

now that is surreal...Iam almost ashamed that I watch him sleeping,
for me it has also a sexual touch to it....like the army is coming to lift up the blanket, and the guy likes it but it is also nearly an act of violence for him (the red and yellow rays suggest that to me)...like you personified the female energy as an martial one...triing to uncover you...and we watch in this very intimate moment

elftantra In reply to mathismondhut [2008-03-13 20:51:32 +0000 UTC]
Sexual connotation is a true component in the making of this work--from my perceptual context the soldiers do sport a kind of dominance and yet a diminished power....their energy is striking but they are so small, toys... So insofar as sexuality this tends to strike me as a kind of forceful play, a child-like ambition or idealism...the boy's knee is a hill/mountain in comparison. The violent potential for me is actually not in the soldiers(at least not relative to the young man) but rather in the creatures on the right most of the image...their energies at first were akin to the parasiticisms of liver flukes or the like, but ultimately transformed functionally into something else.... For sure that tension you observe of being near the interstice between sexual/sensual/emotive pleasure and violation manifests in a number of works, most specifically this and the cupid painting...in which case quite often the interstice is balanced enough as to bring out the reflective cast vote of the observer as an interp of its determinable meaning...
Thanks for really taking the time to ingest the imagery and respond!

Your skills as a painter, especially on the subject human are quite remarkable... that being said, the concept is wonderfully executed. The dynamic created by all the different elements at play here is wonderful

But thank you sincerely for that beautiful energy and attention/absorption of the work, i really, and i mean REALLY went through terror to make this one. So to get love for work after going through at least a minor hell--worth it!!!

I really enjoy the lighting and depth in this, the fabric on his leg is tasty real i can almost feel its texture. The shift between the warm skin tone shading versus the background cool gradients is full of choatic interacting adding to the overall pandemonium of dreams. The one question that perplexes me the most is where the army figures from the dream scape intersect with the physical reality of the person who then becomes part of the dream he's dreaming. Is this why do the colors then become flat around the explosion highlight them? Is this being used as a communication point where dimensions intersect??

Forewarning, i've come awash at this very moment within the effects of an Ambien frame, so answers might vary....though the dreaming or dreamside nature of the painting and that as topic seems synchronistic enough to validate my response...from here anyway :-P
Soooo glad to hear from you that you are still alive and intensive in your investigations of matter, mind, dimensionalities and their interstices.
Your question is a damn good one. Half the time i analyze the painting in this way only after they are finished...elsewise its more a hot/cold intuitive aspect(performs like a seismic needle) directed ultimately by the deeeper darker layerings toward void of mind. I don't usually ask questions, i just check for coherency, flavor of intent.
the soldiers and the flatness of the flash in a way is meant to stop you--it also symbolizes the superficial nature of the archetypes in question within modernity, and as related to the current war--the one soldier in particular crosses over the knee of the figure to pull him into this reality--they are so small however due to their still relatively minute manifestation in the main figure's life...more like playthings, toy soldiers, toy concepts, a novelty of reality to which he has minimal knowledge...
That whole soldier explosive region during the painting process has been at odds, in the pathological makeup(the psychology that channeled and built it), with the furthermost right hand side with the creatures and the psyches which essentially rule that realm of the canvas. They are polarities. The dna/pissing symbol in the middle is in part a synthesis of the two psyches and their manifestations through time, and more.
the dreaming in this case of course, are dreams only in that they are not yet into full manifest view--tho they will be soon...as independently observable occurences...
The flatness...is the flatness of the experience of speaking to an automated customer service bot...a kind of virtual wall with sharply defined limitation, expectation, and propagation. It projects into realspace through various urchin spikes in separate time/spaces...including manifestations as simple as a particularly industrial edge on a tooth brush or razor, to the unbending political styles of dictators and industrial military police collective mind and their subsequent hardline actions offensively and defensively....to even suggestions of principles in scientific methods of observation and experimentation. Compartmentalization, determinism, are its heart--and so too that region becomes flat, fixed, pointed--suggesting a movement from the real to the dream but not visually itself extending into that realm.
Its a mixed bag--the soldiers sit as an interstitial moment, being made chimeras of dolls, triviality, horror, commercialism, hell, automatonism, and yet that single soldier who breaches the barrier indicates individuality, hope, frontiersmanship, idealism, progress....
It might be hard to see at this range but the modeling of the explosion changes from left to right. At left it is totally flat, as it radiates toward the right it becomes more modeled/dimensional.
Does all this have anything to do with an threshold between dimensions. Undoubtedly....between the dimensions of consciousness and the sublimated....between the actions of being hypo-dimensional vs. hyperdimensional. It also challenges all higher and deeper dimensions with its presence and its potence. It registers a doctrine of manifest destiny not of the world but of all dimensions of mind and reality. It is the gestating drooling zygote of a godhead. It justifies itself by seeking to demolish the justification for the other.
This is the genocide machine, but also an aspect perhaps of shiva the destroyer....that in the alienation of compartmentalization...the natural differential which takes part one aspect of creation from another in a functional and pragmatic sense, there is a macro disease inherent....and this machine is built to obliterate all dissent, in other words, it serves in a prehistoric way to bring all the tangents and indulgences of the creator back into sync with the creator....whether this machine knows it or not.
and in this regard the machine will end eventually as a pinnochio story--in its duel with its polar opposite in the canvas, which is "with the force" as it were...which transcends the principles of beauracratically ordained and manifest machines whose concepts grow so dense virtually its entire structure is armored heavily, thickly engrossed in the manfestations of its magick...in this duel the machine will end its usefulness...because its program ends at the doorstep of communion with god, tanks will be put to sleep with whispers and song, and in the transformation of this machine into a higher dimensional/dynamical being. It will finally 'come alive' and be apart of life.
the war is in the dna, always has been, as is the great communion to which that dna acts as portal and interpretor
i extrapolated quite a bit further into the vectors of this painting, should you follow the characters further down the timeline....but hopefully that gives a signal of intent...
really the main interstice for the holistic interstice of dimensions for me personally will occur in sync within 2008 probably around summer, beginning by involving a dear/deer friend, politics and war in new states, and an evolution of humans distinctively, observably on a more trendy level in a short collapse of time.
Ambiens hitting me real good now think i'll go and dream

Its encouraging to hear that. Honestly by the end of this painting i was so exhausted it was hard for me to really look at it. I find sometimes with an intense and complex piece that a couple weeks after not looking at it the painting looks good again, whereas just before its complete it nigh sickens me. lol
Thanks for keeping up with the work and the fav!
