Description
I think this one is my favorite! Another piece in my new series "Lost in Translation." I think I really achieved a look of anger/disgust/evil. I really had a love-hate relationship while making it, but in the end I love it which is great! (usually I don't e.O)This series was inspired by my time spent studying abroad, displaying my anxiety and culture shock from not understanding the visiting country's language. This is why they are missing mouths- a barrier and inability to communicate. The series was installed in a very dark and tiny, narrow space in the gallery to create the feeling of claustrophobia, another feeling I had to combat with. Finally, they were set really high upon the walls so they were "looking down on you", making the viewer feel small and insignificant amidst a sea of disapproving figures.

Poppin' in from ProjectComment for some friendly critique, yeah?
I like the overall abstract nature of the piece. Sure, bits of it are very much identifiable (a face, the fringes of hair, something like an armless shoulder and breasts) but the majority of the piece feels abstract. It's more about the feeling that way, and that's what you were trying to capture. On an emotional level, I believe you captured that shocking and disturbing feeling of not being understood. You nailed the arrogance as the face looks down its nose at you. I also feel that including a little frontal nudity emphasizes that discomfort: I know on my part at least, as an American, there is a negative stigma attached to nudity that you don't find so much in other cultures (seriously, America seems to think it's impossible to show nudity without it being derogatory or sexual in nature). What better way to make someone uncomfortable then, than to have an image like this?
The colors in the background are nice - I like their haphazard feeling. Splashes and streaks where the watercolor has fallen where it may rather add to the chaotic, frightful vibe. There's a subtle gradation underlying the blue and I think that's added a nice effect to balance out the warmer hue of the hair. The bold black lines stand out from the background and draw attention immediately to the subject.
There's only a couple things that really stand out to me, and both of them deal with the composition of the piece. It feels a little "top heavy" with all the blue in the upper-lefthand corner, even with the bold black line in the lower-right. It adds a little balance, but because the blue is such a vibrant color, it easily overshadows everything else. I almost think just a splash of blue - even just a few ink-like blots - might have helped balance the amount of blue to the stark white. The last thing is actually just a small quirk there's a couple of straight-ish lines on either side of the figure... they feel a little harsh because most of the lines in the composition are organic.
Even with all this said, I really don't think any of this detracts terribly from the piece and I think you've done a phenomenal job capturing that discomfort you experienced. Keep it up and stay awesome.

thank you so much for this nice comment, it is beautiful lol!
Definitely get the America stigma part.... and its so weird because where I would say like 90% of it is like ewwwwww nudity there is a whopping acceptance of it IN the art world. I see a lot of things that would be pretty weird, but it has nudity so it clearly is "art" haha. The art world is a funny place. Wish more of the world followed it!!!
I see what you mean, I will file that away for next time! Some of those lines were a legitimate accident, I didn't realize it was still wet and they dripped sideways! XD I was like ooooooooo n0oo00OOOoooo0 haha, but... what can you do? That is actually why the black outlines came in! To take away some of the notice, and I thought it looked too "happy" because of the pastels, so I wanted some dark harshness. I'm so glad as a viewer you picked up on a lot of it
Thanks again!!

I am a sucker for a redhead firstly, I love this striking feel, her eyes bore into me from the gallery page and my concious insisted i clicked. My aesthetic to this is the freedom of colour and distortion to this piece, the depth to her emotions is incredible, bravo to you for an accomplished beauty!

Very interesting concept, I really like the variety of colors in the background. Mixing the warm and the cold colors in such matter, makes the viewer (or at least me) feel dominated by the calm, but stone hearted figure that watches him/her with disdain. As well it gives a feeling of dizzyness.
Am I seeing right, or the figure misses it's arms? as a rejection, maybe?

Thank you! I am still reeeeeeally struggling with color theory, I honestly just picked randomly and went to town. At least it helped create something chaotic XD. Yes, no arms, sort of a bust and I thought it made her more creepy Thanks again!

A really lovely piece. I can see the emotion in the piece. The ability to portray a story and emotion takes talent in order to develop such a concept. The only thing I could say to improve the piece is widening the shoulders in order to give a little more realistic appearance. But, I love the way you expressed it. I can definitely see the anger and disgust in the face, even in just the eyes. And the colors emphasize that emotion. Keep up the good work! Keep expressing your emotions in your art. You express them beautifully and it helps technically as well as helping to interpret a situation. If you want any specific tips or suggestions you would like, just let me know. I would love to help!!
Thanks for sharing your work!!

Thank you so much for a kind comment! It means a lot to me. I see what you mean about the shoulders, I will file that away for next time. I am so glad the expression is starting to show in my work, it is something I am really interested in! Got to hack away some more, baby steps thanks again!

thank you kisaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I'm having a lot of fun doing this portrait series. Its really frustrating because all of my professors are saying "you need to develop a consistent body of work" and all I want to do is experiment! So on one hand I feel like I'm wasting my time with these faces.... but at the same time I am having fun (which isn't that what art is about anyway?) The funniest part is that I made this one in like 3 hours, and its so big! Normally just an 8.5 x 11 takes me like 6 hours.... I am just so thrilled I can crank them out

consistent body of work....??? like style wise or the method you create it?? I can totally tell by your art that it's all your style so that just confuses me haha
6hrs to 3hrs is a huge jump!!

Like a unified content/ things depicted, and for the reason of recognizing that it's all by me. That's cool that you think so although I have made *some* new weird things that I haven't uploaded yet... but yeah it bums me out because I want to experiment, I get bored if I do something too similar all the time =/
