Description
(2016), pencil on paper, 5.5"x10.5" backed with digital frame. The 8s are under the auspices of Mercury and share some of its quicksilvery mental acuity. The cards offer sudden insights, but also share a sense of nervousness and of mental hyper-sensitivity.
For the Wands the combination of willpower and rationality makes for a streak of genius. We are capable of thinking at lightning-speed; we feel inspired and come up with ingenious solutions. This would be a great time to tackle a persistent problem and to apply some out-of-the box thinking. We are able to learn and comprehend anything we put our mind to and to broaden our horizons.
There is only one danger – to leave our more slowly and deliberately thinking companions and audiences behind. So tap into your ingenious communication abilities to take them along with you.
The Rider Waite deck shows us a group of 8 wooden staves that are suspended in the air before a low landscape with a river and green hills. The wands look like they are flying of their own volition with no one holding or throwing them. In the Crowley-Harris deck we see a somewhat stretched and oblong crystal octahedron, which symbolizes the element of Air associated with Mercury and intellectual capability. From the center of the Platonic solid 8 jagged red flashes of lightning branch outwards and the whole composition is crowned by a rainbow.
For my card I wanted to capture a modern scene associated with speed, fire, combustion, split-second reactions and energy and settled on a scene of 8 Formula 1 race cars rounding a corner on a track. Formula 1 race cars are the fastest road course racing cars in the world and can reach speeds of up to 240 mph. Their performance depends on a specialized fuel mix that would tear ordinary car engines apart and on a delicate balance of electronics, aerodynamics, tires, suspension and overall engineering as well as the ability of the drivers to handle these complex machines under intense mental pressure and physical g-forces. To me it symbolizes exactly the mix of energy, intellectual and physical ability and cooperation that is the essential message of this card.
In a spread the card indicates that things will happen very quickly and with considerable force and energy. The situation tends to be somewhat explosive and will require you to react quickly and to think on your feet. If you're waiting for a message, it will arrive very soon. If you're ready to unleash something be careful what you wish for, because all you can do at this point is to hold on and hopefully enjoy the ride. The card may also mean that you have sudden flashes of insight or the ability to communicate complex ideas to others with ease.
For a relationship-related question the card may indicate that you are about to be swept off your feet. It stands for passion and for suddenly falling for someone - hard! Being a Fire card this has less to do with deep love or emotions and more with being bowled over by someone whose charisma, looks and drive inspire lust and visceral attraction. If indicative of friendship rather than romance it could mean that you have amazing chemistry with someone to accomplish things as a partnership or a team.
If the card comes up for a business-related question expect sudden opportunities to open up that you need to grasp quickly. Things will move along at great speed and you and your team need to seize the day if you want to be successful. Don't be afraid to make quick decisions and to move with purpose and determination. This is not the time for analysis-paralysis or much second-guessing. The card could also mean that your job will entail the need to communicate quickly or be connected to travel by air.
If the card is uncovered in an adverse or blockage position it could mean that you are rushing headlong into something you do not fully understand or control and that moving quickly now could be a costly mistake. It could also mean that the speed at which the situation develops has you frozen in panic and indecisiveness.

Thanks so much! Those race cars have a lot of details - my hat's off to the engineers and mechanics that design them and keep them running!

Thanks! I went to see a race in Hockenheim, Germany, many years ago, and we did go to the first race they held at the newly opened track in Austin. It's fun!
