Description

My first tutorial, yay!
It's probably not of much use to anyone but as I had all the WIP photos it seemed a shame not to use them for something.

It has come to my attention that in the long term, using too much of the alcohol may be detrimental to the work and actually cause it to crumble or go gooey. This is just a head's up in case anyone uses it and ends up with a melted pizza a few months down the line!

If anyone does use this then I'd absolutely love to see what you came up with.

Why not? I've collected doll's house miniatures for as long as I can remember but I much prefer to make as much as I can myself.

Thanks sauce was annoying, but now I have red clay

WoundedEros69 [2013-01-25 05:57:19 +0000 UTC]

I got into clay work through making dolls and it was brought to my attention then to never use oil (paint or any kind) on the polymer clay because over time it will degrade the clay much like the alcohol in the gel will do. I noticed a comment where you said you were going to try baby-oil, please don't.

I have these cupcakes that I made years ago, where I used oil pastel to color them, they've crumbled, it took a year or two, but they crumbled. I didn't know when I made them that the oil pastel wasn't a good idea, I was going off of someones tutorial where they said it was safe. Time proved that oil and polymer clay don't mix.

I know it's expensive and can be finicky but using the clay softener by sculpy is the best way to make really mushy clay for cheap. The softener is the polymer agent in the clay.

I'd hate to see you making more of these wonderful miniatures and have them break down on you and you don't know why. Your work is really incredible, please keep making things and showing us.

Thanks!
As I only make these for myself at the moment I don't really mind if they only last a couple of years as I tend to use them in scenes for short periods of time and not on permanent display but I'm still learning what works and what doesn't so I'll try other things in future but for now I'm skint so I'm going to just make do with what I have for now, lol.

actually a lot of people use rubbing alcohol on polymer clay as long as you dont use too much you'll be fine and the clay seems to bounce back

I actually stole a bag of sand from a beach the other week, cos I remembered you saying to mix it in the fimo when you did the wholemeal bread rolls, and there's nowhere sandy round here I could get hold of any. So I filled a little bag with it, then realised a while later that it looked like I was carrying a dog-poo bag /whilst walking along without a dog/, so I hid it in my bag XD

Anyway, pointless story aside, this is amazing! The texture work of the sauce/cheese is brilliant, and the clear effect with the varnish and translucent fimo looks so real! It's a shame pizza wasn't around for my Edwardians or I'd honestly be using this tutorial to make one tomorrow, I really don't think I can justify sending them to Italy in a holiday-abroad chapter just so I can have them eat pizza there!

lol, I've got a big bag of beach sand in a drawer somewhere but this stuff I got from college.

Would they have had quiche back then? Some kind of savoury tart perhaps?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

oingy-boingy In reply to ElreniaGreenleaf [2012-11-19 10:48:32 +0000 UTC]

I don't know when quiche was invented but I know I hate it XD I might try a pie, something with wholemeal pastry baked all crispy and brown on the edges would be fun to do with fimo'n'sand mixture, and they could take that on their picnic

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ElreniaGreenleaf In reply to oingy-boingy [2012-11-19 16:44:20 +0000 UTC]

Because its boring on the bus, I googled it.

Today, quiche is considered as typically French. However, savoury custards in pastry were known in English cuisine at least as early as the fourteenth century. Recipes for custards baked in pastry containing meat, fish and fruit are referred to Crustardes of flessh and Crustade in the fourteenth-century The Forme of Cury[3] and in fifteenth-century cookbooks as well.[4]

So I think you can get away with it for the early twentieth century! lol
(Also, how could you hate quiche?! It's awesome!)

oingy-boingy In reply to ElreniaGreenleaf [2012-11-19 17:07:24 +0000 UTC]

Lol, yup, it goes back a /little/ bit further than I'd have guessed!
(I hate the texture, same for omelette, it's how it's all eggy - ick!)

ElreniaGreenleaf In reply to oingy-boingy [2012-11-19 19:20:02 +0000 UTC]

oingy-boingy In reply to ElreniaGreenleaf [2012-11-19 19:50:51 +0000 UTC]

I will vomit on your shoes if you try that. Seriously, I can't stand the texture of set things - blancmange, jelly, egg, I retch if I try eating anything like that, quiche would honestly make me sick. I'm the same with onions and peppers cos of the texture, I'll quite happily eat things with loads of onion powder or purΓ©ed pepper if it's in a sauce, but if I crunch on a chunk of it I nearly throw up and am often put off what I'm eating enough that I can't have another mouthful.
On the other hand, I ate an entire box of rum truffles in the last six minutes, so as long as I get things I like, I stuff my face XD

Pretty much after every layer, so I baked the base after pastelling, then after adding the sauce, then after the cheese etc etc.
