Lol, once again I'll try for under 200 words [ ye ye good luck with that boy]
Haven't really seen much of any "darker" works from this artist. This title of this piece and the subjects makes me think of a person being willing ready to die. I could look of it as change not death since in the tarot, the Death card usually signifies change not actual death.
I looked over the stock used for the model. honestly, considering the title, I would think that image #6 would have been a better choice than this one. since the back being arched and her making contact with the ground with her toes only seems to me to suggest resistance, struggle, not acceptance or willingly surrendering to fate.
while this image is more dramatic and has an action pose, the #6 image is relaxed and still. I do like how the reaper figure is somewhat vague. not the classic skull and bones death figure. One could see it many ways, it's plausible to say it could be male or female. Death is very familiar to us all in the end, and when it comes it will be as something we know well.
sigh, now that I failed once again at less than 200 words. let me try to sun up quickly. The sky is epic. wonderfully done. the dry cracked earth with scrubs plants was a great choice. Overall the colors and tone fit well together and the image draws you into it.
Dark or not, excellent job Rose! Keep up the great work!

you have a good point there saying that image #6 would make a better choice It does look more "willing" to die with that model... "acceptance" is the word I would use. 'though I still chose the other model because of the pose. Her arching her back up as if offering her heart made me feel that she was not only willing to die, but yearning it
thank you very much for your critique!

Mmmmm now this is where I like discussing different views on a piece of art. in the crits I've written so far I haven't made any scalding comments on figures, moods or colors because well 1. I haven't seen any requested that has been horrible and 2. who am I to day that it was done "wrong" or an incorrect choice made.
I think creative art is expression. A person has an idea, a concept,a feeling inside them and art is the manifestation of the aforementioned. [ Ye gods I love spell check, I can use big words ] But people see things different, even the same object, people will view it differently. I see your point on why you chose that model and I won't disagree with it. My choice of #6 would have been how I view the act of dying. When death folds me in her arms, yeh i'll relax. But, whatever it is that brings me to that point, I'm going down fighting "surrender" really isn't used in my vocabulary much
but, ye, hearing why you chose that particular figure gives me a fresh insight on the piece. Thank you for taking the time to explain!

It's real dark and surreal. It has a "Phantasm" feel to it. I loved the movie... despite never really understanding it.

saigonshadow In reply to EmberRoseArt [2009-06-16 02:24:31 +0000 UTC]

"Phantasm" is actually a series of movies. The first was most pure and the best... it was very surreal like a vivid dream you might have during a particularly stressful time in your life. Where you wake up and think to yourself "Whoa!" A dark place right on the edge of our understanding of reality.

If anyone you know has seen this movie, ask them to give you their impressions as they concern this latest work.

I would also recommend watching the movie Phantasm... you'll come away with some good artistic angles you may never have never imagined previously.

I think it's strange that all of us seem to have that one quirky friend who's seen everything.

I once had a friend who was hooked on heroin and he would always forget where he stashed his stuff and go insane flipping furniture over when he couldn't find it... the reason I mention this is because this is the identical response my former ex-wife had whenever she misplaced the television remote. People and their movies are things not to be messed around with...
