Hehe it doesn't surprise me that you like this book. Strangely I don't like it as much as I love White Fang and I think it's because of the translation (I read it in french). I remember that the first time I read it like ten years ago I didn't like it at all but then I bought a new version with another translation and I really loved the story this time. Unfortunately I have lost this version and now I only own a very recent version I bought because I lost the last one... and I also bought some old editions of the 80's with another translations so I can try and read them too hehe. So it's the proof that a good or "bad" / inaccurate translation can make a huge difference when you read a story originally written in a foreign language. It has happened to me with the Jungle Book too. I NEVER could get into that book and I've really tried, I had to try 4 versions of the text before I found one that sounded good to me. Now I have a very-well translated version with a magnificent cover decorated with golden gilt:

Yeah a lot can get lost in translation and sometimes you wonder what the heck they where thinking when translating. I read a lot of books or rather listen to audiobooks in english and english and Swedish actually lies pretty close with a bunch of grammar-differences. I actually never stumbled over a book with a bad translation- only some things like word-puns that are impossible to translate in a good way but if you know the english words you can guess the pun.

Dubbed movies on the other hand has become so weird. Most animated movies are dubbed and sometimes they just translate word for word with bad voice-acting. We have a few good ones but they lend their voices to everything so all you hear is Pinkie Pie in everything.

In the 80 we had Monica Forsberg translating everything and she did such a good job- taking away stereotypes, fixing jokes so they match and had a team of awesome voice-actors.

In Balto 2 there is one of the worst mistakes I can think of. Now in swedish you differ your grandparents from if they are on your mothers side or your fathers side so your moms mother is Mother-mother (mormor) and your moms dad is mother-father (morfar) your dads is Father-father (farfar) and father-mother (farmor). As Aleu and Balto speak on the boat about her heritage and Balto says that he isthe one that is part wolf Aleu says: "Oh so my grandmother was a wild animal" ...Now in the swedish version she says "Så min mormor var ett vilddjur". This implys it is Jennas mom who was wolf XD.

Very beautiful book. I bought one for my niece with lots of pencil illustrations. If I find the same copy I am thinking of buying it for myself. I have the entire book but with no illustration and it is a fave of mine.

I know what you mean. Most of the time we have quality dubbed versions in France especially for Disney movies which are treated very seriously but even with them, the voice acting is sometimes a bit off.... but I think it often comes from the actors rather than the translated text. We have the luck however to have a very serious company which manages the french versions of Disney movies and other movies (they are called the Dubbing Brothers) and it is thanks to them that we often have good dubbed versions for at least animated movies. I am sorry to hear that it's not the same in your country

Wow indeed that is a pretty big mistake... It's as if the person who did the translation actually didn't know anything about the characters or the movie and had to translate the text without having the context. That is showing a huge lack of carefulness

Yesss this one is very beautiful, I wish I had found a better photo but it was the only one online and the book is in my flat while I am at my parents' home now :C
That sounds like a pretty good idea, I wouldn't hesitate to buy this beautiful book if I were you, books sometimes make magnificent objects C:

Yeah. The Disney movies they take pretty seriously but it is like they do not make more effort in making the jokes work. I think Emperors new groove was the last one they tried to make all the jokes actually work instead of just translating square over.

Yeah. Also the voice-actor is doing a lot of work and she did not catch it. But that I can understand.

Oh yes. I love books and I have so many they don't fit into two book-cases. I have a closet full as well (well not full but two huge, deep shelves of them.
