Description
Brushing up on my paintin' skills again.. even though there's a little bit of correction in this. Sometimes I just can't paint over the black once I put it down.I've made this one available in prints. This will be new to me. Forgive me my terrible, terrible, inevitable mistakes.
See [link] for the initial inks.

I love her little questioning sound. This character is my favorite of your originals.

This is still my favorite of all your pieces.
The painting is so damn excellent, and such emotion is coming off of her. I really loved the description you had of the word "Broo?" I'm lost, feed me... simple, but there's so much subtext to that. I really want to see this character evolve and I want to see how you project yourself through her personality and lifestyle, you're such an interesting person and it really shows through Avarice. There are such dark, yet playful vibes I've felt through your drawings of Avarice. If I get the chance, I'm so going to buy this print, it would look fantastic in my room.

I'm honored that you'd like a copy.. and happy that you can get something from looking at it. I draw things.. write them.. but wonder if anyone actually gets out of it what I put into it. Its nice to know that at least someone does. Thank you for articulating your feelings.

If I may hit you with a 2nd comment, this painting is just so stunning! It makes me think of Sam Keith. I think your style would do well in comic format.
Jesus, this looks so wicked sharp!

Thank you! Keith is definitely an inspiration. The animated version of The Maxx is regularly called upon from deep within the subconscious.
MMmm.. Keeping watching here and the blog. I am slowly, surely making my way toward doing some comics/animation of my own. Since the dissolution of the Eds, I have realized how important it is to me that I get something out there that is purely 'my own'. And I should make use of this 'down time' while I have it.

Oh yeah? You know, maybe that's why I'm feeling a very similar vibe from Avarice that I got from when I first drew Molly from Fish Quarry. Would it be weird of me to think we where both riding the same flow of creative energy when we birthed these two into our work? It's interesting, to say the least... Sam Keith is pretty damn amazing. The first time I finally saw the Maxx, I had a voice inside me that said "this will stay with me for the rest of my life." like the first time you listen to a very powerful album.
Aw, horse pucky, I forgot to keep up with your blog DX I'll go there now to see what you're up too. Damn, I'm really bad at keeping up with myself...

Ahhh! I know who you are now. Sometimes I get disconnected from people when I don’t realize they have more than one account. I’m a GOON. In that case, I would say its certainly not too far off to consider its had an influence on both of us. I don’t know if I’ll dabble with the sexual themes like Keith did (in regards to Avarice) but its definitely true that his work with character relationships has affected me. At the age of 12 my obsession with The Maxx ran parallel to my obsession with SatAM Sonic The Hedgehog… You can only imagine the kinds of things I drew at the time. Lets say Archie Comics got some weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrd fan art!
Its strangely accurate to compare the effect of The Maxx to that of an album. There’s just such a richness to it and the more you view it, the deeper it goes. It defies explanation, but I understand. For what its worth, the actual musical album that’s affected me the most is probably Aenima by Tool. Its worth mentioning because there are similar themes… Destructive co-dependence; beneficial re-birth from the ashes of said-destruction… Lots of complex human-type stuff. Its worth checking out if you haven’t already.
Also: have you read the comic book series The Maxx? The beginning of it is exactly as it appears in the animated version… but the comic goes far beyond where the MTV series ended. Again, worth checking out. There is a very natural, haunting progression to it. It remains the only comic book to ever push me to the verge of tears. I won’t give away what part…

Don't worry, I do that all the time! XD Aspergers kind of sucks for memory. I'm glad you remember me though!
I can't see myself dabbling with sexual themes either, because sex doesn't play a major role in my life, like it probably did for Keith or people Keith knew. If anything, it would be how detached I am from human interaction, such as sex. I just don't understand sex (ever seen Dexter?) it just seems so... undignified. (I think it's an Aspergers thing as well) Although, I suppose I can see sex being a major issue with Punk, he's very much a sex addict... course he's an everything addict. Hahaha!
Haha! Oh, Lord, I bet you really turned some heads with your fan art XD You actually sent them to the Archie Comic makers? Oh God, that's hysterical! I've never seen your secret stash of fan art, but I can imagine there's some stuff in there that would make some people's heads explode, haha! I mean that as a compliment, of course. I really wish I could draw stuff as wild and crazy as you do... especially those really chaotic drawings where it's like, a million different things going on, swirling together in a big vortex of destruction. Between the two of us, you're definitely MUCH closer to that vibe of pure utter chaos Sam Keith inspired us with.
Oh! This could be fun... hmm, an album that effected me in the same way as The Maxx did... -scolls through music library- I honestly can't find one album I have that effected me that deeply, but there are a number of albums that came close... Figurines, James Figurine, Aphex Twin, InnerPartySystem, Fischerspooner (wow, I really like Electronica) Kid Cudi and M dot STRANGE are all artists that inspired me.
But if I had to pick one album, like, in terms of if I could use songs in a show version of Fish Quarry, but only from one album, I'd pick InnerPartySystem, but Skeleton by Figurines would be a close second.
Oh yes, I love the comics! It goes so far and just gets deeper and deeper, leading up to an ending that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up just thinking about it. Hell, I've even got all the pilot comics and the cameo comics! I think my favorite cameo comic is a really obscure one from a comic called "Gay Comics" where Sara talks to a gay young man who's under her bridge. They have such an adorable exchange of dialog and it leads up to such an incredibly sad ending.
I think I know what part you're speaking of. For me (without giving anything away to possible ease droppers) it was when they reveal Mr. Gone's past. His youth is just... so fucking pathetic, it hurts... and there's just one single page where it all comes together in such a haunting way, it was just utterly heartbreaking.
I think what's most interesting is how the Maxx has influenced the protagonists of our comics in terms of their designs. They're both reflections of ourselves (I made mine female because I sometimes feel more feminine on the inside then what I allow myself to be on the outside, but I'm sure my old ex-friends I'm drawing inspiration from saw me more like a girl anyhow) but I find it very weird how we both gave them coats and wild curly hair. Course, I suppose we both have wild curly hair, so that actually makes sense. I think the coats represent something, though. For me, it's the shield I put up when I'm around other people. When Molly feels safe, she'll take off the coat and under it is a brilliant orange sweater, portraying her soft, inner-self.
(Wow, sorry that ran for so long, but we're talking about some interesting stuff :3)

Pffft! What mistakes? Honestly, I wouldn't say that there's anything wrong with the execution. I know that our worst critic is our selves, but to anyone else who sees this, it's just another masterpiece XD

Well its more of a slight color tweaking I had to fix in photo shop. I tried to change the shade of green half-way through when I was doing it.. so the green in the original painting is a little more "blue" than this. LoL
But thank you very much!

I don't know what colors I was expecting her to be, but this is the second time I've seen her colored in and it's still surprising to me. XD But attention-grabbing! This makes me wish I could paint inside the lines. XP
Also, I don't believe I mentioned her untied boots when I saw the unpainted version. Nice touch!

That could be because I forgot to put them in. I think they're even in the pencil version but not the inked.
Color is always a weird issue with me. I seem to conceptualize things in black and white, so when it comes time to color, I actually have a difficult time settling on one design. I've tried many with her. In the oldest drawings, the colors that stayed seemed to be gray & white with brown hair.. and then with red hair. But gray just doesn't work. I tried yellow briefly, but that is like, too innocent in a way. Definitely too... happy? I don't know. I sent a color testy-type thing to Jay a while back to see what she thought but I wasn't sold on it myself. Seeing how her drawing turned out with it, I was suddenly like "Woah, hey maybe that -does- work." Because I certainly like how hers turned out. And I like how this one turned out! Actually!
There's a toxicity about Avarice... She seems almost radioactive.
Ohh that's a lotta jibber jabber. I'm sleep-deprived. This is what happens.

Naaah, backstory is fine! Haha, I can see her as radioactive. XD
I think something about fur makes it harder to decide on a color. I guess because there's only so many fleshtones you could choose from on a human. Still, I have gotten comments about how weird it is for my friends to finally see my black-and-white characters in color, so I guess that could apply to any character!

Man, color issues linger in some cases. Remember all the trouble Jonny 2x4 has caused you. XD
Fur almost feels like a 'lost opportunity' if you don't do something neat with it. Which isn't to say neutral colors are out. It's just fun to explore.
