Description
Anyone who's seen the SatAM Sonic cartoon will probably recognize this scenario from Season 2 where Sonic taught Nicole some of his sloppy lingo.Oh Sonic, will you and Sally ever leave my drawing hand? I have had many obsessions. But only a choice few have had lasting intensity. Chronologically, I believe the television-related ones go: Teddy Ruxpin, Legend of Zelda, Ninja Turtles, Darkwing Duck, Sonic The Hedgehog, The Lion King, The Maxx, and Ed, Edd n Eddy. Sometimes there are gaps and sometimes they overlap (like I think Sonic, Lion King and Maxx were all in rapid succession if not simultaneous) whereas the time between the ending of my Maxx-phase and the beginning of my Eds-phase is a couple years. And some of these things lasted for, I kid you not, A DECADE. That's a decade of drawing, thinking, writing, living, breathing some random characters for whatever reason.
Some of these things stayed alive in me primarily through "spin-off" obsessions. Which... is why when I was at the height of my Sonic phase I had Rossum's Universal Robots imported from another school's library because it was the origin of the English word "Robot".

I remember this. This scene and the show. I loved the comics, too. Sally used to be my favorite (aside from Bunnie), now...I don't even want to talk about it.
Great job! Sally's face pretty much sums up what she's saying here: "SONIC, YOU ASS."

The only thing I'd change about SatAM Sonic is I'd give him a meaner streak. I like the sass, but he almost needed to be more reckless to really sell it.

XD completely. He should also be banned from singing. The one time he did it in SatAM was wretched and I cannot believe they made a show full of that with Sonic Underground.
Quick, hilarious trivia though: Sam Vincent (Voice of Double Dee on Ed, Edd n Eddy) actually played the singing voice for Sonic on Sonic Underground. I thought that was incredibly strange when I heard about it.

I freak'n lived Sonic SatAM. It was a super obsession for me when I was a young teen. Oh the fan-art I created. I love this. You added a real life to their lines. It's so not-static. This is making me want to draw some Sonic stuff. ^_^

Very cool drawing.
Sonic SatAM is the best Sonic show period.
Also, I was born in 82 and watching my favorite cartoon shows in the 80's and 90's.
Sonic SatAM was one of them.

I think you did a better job of illustrating this scene than the original animators did. I love how free-wheeling your style is- lets you express the emotions of the characters quite vividly. Great throwback work.

Ah yes. The classic Sonic and Sally from the days of old... It's a shame that Both Archie Comics and SEGA ruinied Sonic waaay back in 1999. SEGA picked the wrong 'New' look for Sonic which actacully made him look less cool than he was before.
Plus Archie added waaay to many new charchers in their comics that it basically screwed up the whole sonic storyline thing. Which is why I'm not much of a fan of sonic's comics and videogames anymore.
I like your drawing through. Sally looks like she's about to kill Sonic. Better get outta here, Sonic...

I see you were 11 when SatAM came out, were you also into the games at that time and the comics?
Did you had a crush on Sally like i did when i was 12 and on Lupe just like when i was 13 turning 14 on the last season? they were both wetdreams for me.
1993 was a great year for a 12 year old boy like me on animated crushes from Sally, Taarna (Watched Heavy Metal on late night TBS on a friday night), Poison Ivy, Minerva Mink, Nurse, Callie Briggs (Swat Kats), Teegra from Fire and Ice (I rewatched that that year when i bought the video after not seeing it since i was 5 in the 80's), Miranda from Bonkers and others.
I've been a subscriber of the comics since i got the first issue in december of 1992 and i got my genesis that year with Sonic 1 & 2.

This has done my heart a great deal of good <3 I say, Sonics expression steals the spotlight in the pic, and his body language is spot on!
Sally is, and will forever be, my favorite cartoon character! The shading is lovely too!
Thank you for sharing this, its spectacular!

Awe! Thanks! I certainly share your love for Sally. She's one of the only female characters I ever really liked as a person.. if that makes sense. Perhaps it was simply because they never gave her a bow or a dress... But then, Bunnie was also a pretty cool female character. Weird that a show based on a video game turned out to be so damn good. I love the Ben Hurst interview on the DVDs... he sounded so passionate about it all. LoL
One thing I always thought was awesome about Archie and DiC is that their designs are rather well thought-out interpretations of other animals through the "Sonic Lens" as opposed to "Sonic with some different ears" or "Sonic with a different color and spikier hair"... I mean, I guess Uncle Chuck is a retooling of Sonic's design but there's an excuse--they're related. Sega's designs for some of the games--aside from just Tails--always seemed a little.. well.. lazy to me. Amy is a pink Sonic. Nack is just ugly.. Knuckles is a mutated Sonic, etc, etc, etc.. I digress.

I hadn't thought of it before, but you're quite right! DIC and Ben Hurst did such an amazing job on the series, and the anthromorphing of the animals through the sonic lens was indeed not the 'recolor' tool that you see from sega often times!
Hmm, I wonder how much creativity is actually left in Sega...Sooner or later they can't even create a char without it being someone fanchar already XD

embrio In reply to bringonthethunder [2010-05-07 11:37:45 +0000 UTC]
Its really too bad Archie had to try so hard to accommodate all their shitty designs and boring story lines. When they did that whole "Sonic and Tails fuck off on random adventures" thing after issue #50 I sort of dropped out of it... And dropped out even more when they introduced more humans, ala the Dreamcast storyline (which incidentally is what I hated about the Sonic anime). I was a fan of the SatAM cartoon before I even understood Sonic was a video game character. So I'm admittedly biased. Every now and then I still pick up an issue but I never know what's happening. LoL

ugh, thats what turned me off too. I just lost interest after that. To me, there was no point if the rest of my fave chars wer eleft out of the story... I was pretty upset...but STILL I waste dmoney subscribing. I gave up after issue 75 and occassionally picked up issues after... but the magic was gone.

embrio In reply to bringonthethunder [2010-05-12 00:39:42 +0000 UTC]
Exactly. The magic. I started to feel like the characters were just husks--not really the people I knew. Its like pod-people. They look just like they always did... but don't be fooled! The very definition of "Shark Jumping".

I did a drawing of her as Taarna from Heavy Metal, check it out.
