Time for some work from James Cameron's latest film, Avatar. Here is Neytiri teaching Jake Sully the art of fishing the way that the Omaticaya do  Of course, why would Jake settle for using a net when he could just throttle the little blighters with a spear?

Oh dear...mental image, mental image!!! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/r/r… " width="29" height="27" alt="" title="rofl"/> Jake trying to catch fish with a spear, getting beaten by said fish while Neytiri watches him with that "What is the moron doing -now-?" face.

By the way I love the fact that you did a J/N art that is more then then simply mating under the glowing trees. This has character and a story in it.

A comment on Jake though, he's not shaped right. His torso is too short and he's too...stubby all the way around. I think it might be because of the angle that you were using...those kinds of angles can be a real pain to get right. I think it should also be commented on (though I'm sure you know it) that Jake is actually bigger then Neytiri.

I really like the background, especially water. The ripples look fantastic. Also you did really good on Neytiri, especially on her necklace and her pose. She really looks a lot like her. Great work except for those few comments on Jake.

You're right to worry. Jake has already proven that he doesn't get along well with any Pandoran wildlife; the hammer-head rhinos, the thanator and the viper-wolves have all tried to kill him one way or another. Chances are that the fish won't be much nicer. And adding pointy objects into the equation? Oh dear!

Ah, yes. As nice as that scene underneath the Tree of Voices was, drawing - or even just viewing - artworks of that nature has always been discomforting to me. I become quite wary when things are labelled with 'mature content'.

Jake's torso does appear too short. Thanks for pointing that out. The intention was to have Jake leaning forward, therefore the hips and waist will be foreshortened. However, I failed to shade around his waist area accordingly. He does just look stubby and unproportional now. Yes, Jake is bigger than Neytiri originally and since he is closer to the viewer he should be made bigger anyway. That was a major fail on my part.

Thanks heas for the great review! I was worried about how neytiri would turn out. She is acceptionally hard to draw, though that may be becaise of all the jewellery and feathers that she wears. The water also was difficult enough so I'm glad that it looks alright.

Hehe...yeah Jake does NOT play nice with the local wildlife. -Though- in Pandorian terms that means that Pandora is CRAZY about him Hey, guess it's just tough love I guess

And glad that I could help you out!^^ Foreshortening poses are a pain in the neck...reference pictures can be your best friend. Hard to find but SO worth it.

Ah yes! Like the banshees! I remember doubling over with laughter the first time that I saw that scene, where Jake asks Neytiri how will he know if a certain ikran chooses him and she replies with a straight face: "He will try to kill you." Tough love, indeed.

You were an awesome help! I agree with you on that one; references are very handy things. The Nude Figure: A Visual Reference for the Artist by Mark Edward Smith is a book that I've found to be quite useful when drawing figures. You just have to get over looking at naked people first. I didn't use it for this piece though, and it evidently shows.

Ooooooh....I love that scene! Jake's perfect deadpan "outstanding" is one of the best lines ever...I use it when I'm playing video games and NPCs "reward" me with crazy dangerous missions and monsters to kill.

I'll have to go look for that book...looking at naked people doesn't really bother me. To me it's all for the art and everyone's built the same way. I'll just have to hide it from my sisters...it -really- weirds them out.

Honestly, between Jake, Grace and Trudy there were some hilarious lines in the film. I use Jake's "that's kinda freaky" line a lot from when he was told by Grace that he would go blind if he played with his hair.

Ah yes, when all is said and done, it is just art. You have to learn the shapes of the figure before you can shove clothes on them anyway. It's easy understand how people could feel awkward about viewing such things though, and I'm still embarassed when I get caught drawing nude figures.

If that were my Chimera, she'd push him (as in Jake) in not hold him up

Y'know, if this was supposed to be Neytiri trying to teach her son that there is an easier way to catch fish - that would be totally believable.

If Jake Junior took strongly after Dad and was old enough to start puberty, he'd have a broader, more well developed upper body than the average Na'vi kid. And someone who inherited Jake's personality and Neytiri's stubbornness sure would be hell bent on getting a fish with a spear just to prove he could do it.

You know, I like the way that you think. After all, Jake and Neytiri's son - if they had one - would be next in line to become olo'eyktan and would be expected to show strength as soon as possible. And of course he would inherit both Jake's and Neytiri's strong atrbutes. I could have an excuse for making the mistake of making him look to broad in the shoulders if that was the case.

Thanks for the comment!
