Description This is my old photoshop tutorial for creating fire and flames without using a tablet. It uses the smudge tool. I also go into depth on how to change the colors to make whatever color flames you want!

I have more tutorials and art lessons on my site Emerald Angel Comics with more to come!

I've made some brushes based on my tutorial! Chrissy's Fire PS Brushes

Used my tutorial to enhance this masterpiece. Surreality

A Wiacom Tablet is a little electronic pad with a pen that goes to it. You can use that to draw with. It's easier than using a mouse. but, they are expensive. You can google them to see what I'm talking about.

Make sure your white line was on the same layer with the black background ... if it isn't you're not going to be able to make the flame change colors because it needs the black mixed in with the white to make the gray areas. Those are the areas that change color. You can get rid of the black background by changing the layers blend properties if you want the flame to be on an existing image. To do this, right click the layer with the flame and black BG, then select "Blending Options" You'll see at the bottom of the new pop up menu and area that says "Blend If" on the first bar called "This Layer" grab the arrow with your mouse, and hold the ALT key on your keyboard at the same time, and drag to the right until it looks like you want it too. There you go. O_~

If that didn't help then maybe your smudge tool brush isn't big enough or the strength may be set too low of a percentage to see the changes when you brush over the line. Lemme know how that works out for you.

Oh I see, you used the fire for the hooves of the Nightmare? Is that what that is? A Nightmare? I see Pegasus, Unicorn, and a Nightmare ... Nightmares are the flaming black horses in AD&D, which is where I've seen them. I don't know if they're called anything else. Let me know what it's called if it's not "Nightmare"

Renilicious In reply to EmeraldTokyo [2008-03-22 23:15:50 +0000 UTC]

Yep, it's a nightmare. My Nightmare is sort of a mix of the AD&D version and the real myth of nightmares. It's a Saxon term for a demon called a "Mara/Mare" to describe that feeling that's been documented when you're in bed, not quite awake and feel that there's something sitting on your chest, rendering you immobile while you continue to have bad visions (nightmares). As I needed a third horse that was easily recognisable, I borrowed the term. Hehe.
