Description I watched the new Godzilla movie yesterday, and I've been up all night drawing this guy.

I really liked the movie overall, and really only had one complaint.  Godzilla needed some ankles.

I decided I'd design my own version of the King of Monsters.  I made him much more theropod-like.  I think it has more in common with Zilla than Godzilla, but I always was a fan of Zilla's design.

Also, note: 2014Goji's legs are based on sauropods'. That's why they're so pillar-like; the designers thought it would make sense for a creature of his size. And, technically speaking, he isn't a dinosaur. He's much, much older.

I agree, I've grown to love the 2014 version with time.

Yep. He's just this gargantuan juggernaut of scales and muscle. You can't help but love that!

You do realize that this thing would break its legs under its own weight before it could take a step, right?

I don't think it would be at any more of a risk than other Godzilla renditions.  Pretty sure they're all too large to actually exist lol.

Actually, most of the Godzilla designs over the years are much more capable of supporting themselves than the shitty '98 ripoff. The legs are massive and pillar-like, like those of sauropods, and the powerful tail dragging behind it can also support the big G's weight. That lumbering stride makes a lot of sense for such a colossal animal-it's no surprise that you can see sauropod traits in the 2014 Godzilla's design.

Zilla, however, is an entirely different story. Not only is his body incredibly unbalanced with that stupid boxy head, but he's still apparently fast enough to run at several hundred mph with those toothpicks.

When you're talking about creatures so huge that they would kill themselves under their own weight, you don't NEED to turn them into shitty, incredibly boring versions of themselves.

I would not say that Zilla's head would surely unbalance it as it is kinda small in comparation to the body...

She makes a point, not even the 2014 Godzilla could live at that size. Hell, no animal could walk on land at that size. Square cube law man. Granted, I could see a body type such as his working at around maybe sauropod size.

I noticed, you claim that you're impartial to things like dinosaur feathers, but you strike me as very neophobic. You seem to resist change.

It's cool that you're a fan of what you're a fan of, but that doesn't mean I need to change my opinions.  You like big fat outdated man suits, and I like theropods.  It's cool.

No, I like the iconic character that I've grown up with, and I'm pissed that you decided to take away everything that makes that character unique! Godzilla's entire body is suited for stomping around cities-it's built like a living mountain, giving the effect that he's a walking natural disaster-which he kind of is. The eyes in the suit are permanently set in a glare, looking down on the puny beings that rose him from his slumber, and even the skin was designed to look warped and blackened. This thing? There is nothing that makes it stick out, nothing that convey's that even makes it obvious that it's Godzilla. It's just a black neovenatorid with some funny spikes on its back.

Also, the "It's OK, he's accurate now!" argument is pathetic. If you'd actually read the link I sent you, you would know that.

the term fantasy is a thing, look it up, and they have a differing opinion, all people have opinions, if people like the more theropody Godzillas then that is their opinion, they aren't forcing you to look at the pictures.
I'm not a fan of Picasso's paintings, but I respect people who do.

And actually, I'm not sure why you think I care about your opinions.  I already said that I made this for myself, and my only issue with the 2014 movie Godzilla was that I thought it needed some ankles.  That's not destroying your childhood.  You're going to have to grow up and accept that people will make art that you don't agree with.  I don't even understand what you expect me to do about it.  You're complaining on a concept I did (for myself) over a year ago.  What is your goal here?  To annoy me?  You can't bully me into liking what you like any more than I can convince you to stop bothering artists on deviantart when you don't like their depictions.

Redesigning a character in a way that still has some semblance to the original is one thing; designing something that looks so little like the original character that you might as well call it a totally original creation is another.

EmilyStepp In reply to DeviandETM [2014-05-22 01:48:22 +0000 UTC]

Kind of.  Zilla was a redesign of Godzilla when it was made, not a standalone monster.  This is also a redesign.  It's only superficially similar to Zilla.  Both Zilla and Godzilla have man-like proportions whereas my version is a scaled up theropod dinosaur.

Yeah, that bugged me as well. I own the huge figure of him, but the next-to-no-ankles thing drove me up the wall when I first saw his design. And glad to know I'm not the only Zilla fan out there! He gets so much crap, but I loved him.
