Quadrupedal spino? Ew. I love this artwork but it’s not very accurate.

It's not a Spinosaurus, and it has about 70 million years of speculative evolution compared to Spinosaurus.

Spinosaurus was reconstructed in 2019 to look like a quadruped because of the discovery of Sigilmassasaurus

EmilyStepp In reply to DraconisKiller [2019-10-25 19:03:09 +0000 UTC]

Don't you mean 2014?  Also a lot of people are back to reconstructing it bipedal now.

DraconisKiller In reply to EmilyStepp [2019-10-26 10:46:36 +0000 UTC]

I'm still saying it's a quadruped because it's more designed to eating fish. Also, Spinosaurus's bite is weak and it's cone-shaped teeth are more useful for fish eating. T-Rex had the more deadly bite force of any dinosaur in the world.

TheMonkeysUnkle In reply to DraconisKiller [2020-04-14 16:10:31 +0000 UTC]

Eating fish has nothing to do with whether or not it was quadrupedal. Look at Suchomimus and Baryonyx. AFAIK they're both still agreed to be bipedal, and every bit the piscivore that Spinosaurus was. Spino's forelimbs, the wrists in particular could have never born its weight while walking. It may have gone on all fours while resting, but there's little chance it did so while in motion.

EmilyStepp In reply to DraconisKiller [2019-10-26 19:12:51 +0000 UTC]

I'm not convinced their wrists would have been able to bare weight in a fully quadrupedal scenario.  I'm more inclined to accept that it was partially bipedal instead of completely if it was a good swimmer, which I believe a recent study suggested it wasn't.

In any case this Caldera spinosaur is meant to have had many millions of years extra to evolve into a stronger wristed quadruped.

Now, the Spinosaurus is more of a swimmer rather than a land creature

TheMonkeysUnkle In reply to EmilyStepp [2020-04-14 16:18:44 +0000 UTC]

Are you saying there was a study claiming Spinosaurus was a poor swimmer? If so, I'll have to look around for it, though it wouldn't surprise me.

I remember in 2014 thinking it was odd how people were saying it may have been aquatic, since even with the new look, it doesn't really have any adaptations for it, and the sail would actually be a hindrance. Considering the fact that this information it would make it seem that Spinosaurus was incapable on both land and in water, it stands to reason that the real thing was probably built much different from our current picture.

can I have a skeleton image based on this design so I can make my blender spinosaurus based on this?

It's a fictional spinosaurid that evolved in The Caldera.

I'd say it would have a light blue or white under belly, with a blue top, most like sea creatures today.
But i hate to be that one nerd in the comments... XD

EmilyStepp In reply to TheJurassicChicken [2019-05-04 19:10:33 +0000 UTC]

If it were sea going, that would make a lot of sense.  It's in an isolated swampy environment though.

Oh wow that is a nice color pattern there. I love the eye look along the back. Mothra inspired? The baby form is absolutely adorable.

Not super duper Mothra inspired, but I might have looked at some similar butterflies/moth eyespots as what inspired Mothra's.  That, and I did draw Mothra in March so it could have been subconscious lol

I really like just how dragon-like many of the more recent takes on Spinosaurus look - it really gives the animal its own identity that sets it apart from other dinosaurs.

EmilyStepp In reply to Lediblock2 [2019-05-01 04:54:28 +0000 UTC]

It's so weird that it sets itself apart even just with its skeleton lol

But yeah with scifi/fantasy art I love when they're a little more monstrous

I know, right?! Honestly, the only entries for #buildabetterfaketheropod that I liked were these ones that detailed spinosaurs as this highly diverse group of marine forms, with one giant member that preyed upon them. You can just go so WEIRD with spinosaurs, and nobody would really bat an eye.

Another awesome addition to the Caldera! I’m loving the almost volcanic-looking colour scheme, I’d heard this guy would be conflated with the Niger Firespitter in The Caldera so is that the reason for the colours?
