Description I am currently working on a contract for publisher Metro Media, creating a manga style graphic novel adaptation of the Shakespeare play Hamlet.
It's very exciting and I'm honoured to be working on such a huge piece - though it is a LOT of work ;^_^.

This is a taster page from the project. Watch out for this and also Romeo & Juliet by Sonia Leong early next year!

For more info as the projects come together, check out: [link]

Enjoy!

xD That last panel is a total MUFASA-- moment.

I love the way you characterised everyone. ;__; And Horatio!
All the other times I read the play, I pretty much ignored Horatio... it was only a couple of months ago that I started reasling how important he actually is, lol.

This scene is very dramatic... I love the way you paced it, and the expression are really intense.

Horatio's a great character because he's one of the only people who really sees what is coming, I think. He can see the darkness growing in his friend, and where his actions may lead, but he can only watch...which is so sad!

You'll be glad to know that this book has been out for a good few years now ^_^
You should be able to pick it (and my newer shakey title: Much Ado About Nothing) up in most book shops or, if it's not on the shelf, they'll be able to order it in for you.
I hope you manage to get a copy! ^_^

That's great! [feels uninformed] It's really great to see this because I am a English Major for Secondary Teaching, thanks for going through the work to put Hamlet together like that, it's really a pleasure to see manga and lit going together. Heck, it might even be a fantastic resource for students one day.

Well, I know that the manga shakespeare series is on the corriculum in Scotland - which is amazing!! I hear from several people these days using the books in school, it's very exciting to know! I wish I'd had something like these when I was at school, haha.
You should check out the rest of the series!
Thanks again!

I love the style of your adaptation. I've always imagined Hamlet looking like an emo-kid, and I think you've shown his emo-ness very well.

hehe - cool! He is very much an emo....but god he's an awesome character besides...so muhc depth. And, let's be fair, he has good reason to be a little emo ^_~

Out of Hamlet, my absolute favorite's are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Especially after I read "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead". They make me giggle.

Glad you like it. And wow - you're doing hamlet at school? awesome. I loved the play when I studied it for my A-levels..it has so many levels, and Hamlet himself really is a gem of a character. Hopefully having studied it, the manga will be an interesting read. hehe.

Thanks so much!! ^_^

Great job!

emmav In reply to agreatguy6 [2007-01-14 01:17:51 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's certainly manga storytelling....but the language is all original shakespeare ^_^
So it should technically take the reader through the story in a more understandable way, much like a film adaptation - we hope! hehe

MathewJPallett [2006-06-30 18:51:07 +0000 UTC]

Did you leave room for the gutter/inner margin?

Is this page from the left hand/even side of the book, or the right/odd?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MathewJPallett In reply to MathewJPallett [2006-06-30 22:14:59 +0000 UTC]

I realise now, that the answer lies in the title. And I'm now a little afraid that I've developed a rather unhealthy obsession with page layout.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

emmav In reply to MathewJPallett [2006-07-13 21:17:16 +0000 UTC]

LOL - well, all of our shakespeare pages come complete with a full 2cm bleed - it's quite a lot! So it allows room for the designer to lay the pages out as they need to. ^_^
Page layouts are a good thing to be obsessed over..they take a lot of work!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MathewJPallett In reply to emmav [2006-07-13 23:35:08 +0000 UTC]

One thing I've noticed, having been reading Shojo Beat for a Year, is that their page layout avoids bleeding into the Gutter, which lead me to look at all my other manga, (were it not for the fact that I've got almost a thousand, which would take a LOOOOOOOONG time, so I just looked at some old copies of Geobreeders & Record of Loddoss War, which confirmed my suspicion.) Then they ran the final instalment of the "Create your own manga" column in SB, which brought this information to the attention to the (estimated) 94,000 people who buy Shojo Beat.

I also have an irrational fear of Tomato Ketchup!!!
