Description God,
I can barely remember
when we were strangers
and all I knew was your name.
And I could sit next to you,
and not feel a thing.
I could look in your eyes
and not know exactly what you were thinking.

I wish I could draw out my feelings.
But all I would get
is a mess of paper and pencil
and some scrambled up picture
of demented people
with missing heads and limbs.
Or no faces.

So I write.

Because there’s something so methodic
about the rolling of a ballpoint pen
running over college ruled paper.
It’s an antidrug in itself-
rehab in every letter
and safety in every punctuation.

No, not like a cut.
Not like a sharp, shiny razor
slicing a beautifully, unmarked arm.
No, nothing like that.
Nothing compared to the constant typing of words
or the forming of sentences. And thoughts.

So I write.

This is a beautiful poem - I can completely feel the emotion in this work, especially when you speak about how writing is in anti-drug, and about how it's 'rehab in every letter'. I love that imagery, it resonates with me since I am a writer as well.

But just between you and me, writing isn't my rehab, it's my drug. So when I can't write I end up distracted and annoyed and craving a pen and paper. He he.

Really lovely... writing is a much better of letting out your feelings than anything else, I think. Even though it varies from person to person.. creativity is always the best way.

Oh good Lord, I'm tearing up like a baby. xD

You wrote this on my birthday, and it's fantastic. I really don't have many words to express affection that haven't already been cliched to pieces.

This is what emotion used to mean.

So...when you say "God" you didn't meant it like you were talking to God or about God...it was just like an expression like "God, I'm tired of this?" It's very interesting because my first take on it was you were referring to him, but now I re-read it and it makes sesne that you're talking about someone else...That's pretty awesome that there's different interpreatations!

It's very well written. I can relate, as I try to draw and stuff, and not be able to produce anything I could understand, and find out that writing's what really sets me free.

Unlike Frood-Bop, the first line "God" didn't strike me as you talking to God, but as an expression.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

emmaxrose In reply to rilLie [2009-04-16 15:31:41 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.
That's what I was going for, using "God" as an expression.
Keep writing! : D

Frood-Bop [2009-04-16 06:23:18 +0000 UTC]

I like it a lot but I'm still left wondering what your relationship with God is. The first stanza implies that you currently hvae one with Him, however, the poem is left open to whether or not you do. I'm curious.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

emmaxrose In reply to Frood-Bop [2009-04-16 15:18:37 +0000 UTC]

I originally used it as an expression instead of more of a prayer, but I'd like to think everyone has their own take on it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Frood-Bop In reply to emmaxrose [2009-04-17 03:30:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, it, being poetry, should allow everyone to have their own take on it. I feel the key though to great poetry is allowing everyone their opinion as well as allowing everyone to see the original intent clearly. Thoughts?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

emmaxrose In reply to Frood-Bop [2009-04-17 15:40:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I do agree. But sometimes, it's best that the reader doesn't know the original purpose of the writing, since the writer is the only one holding that information. I don't know. It depends.

I don't think the first line *addresses God*. I'm pretty sure it's just a turn of phrase, "god I'm tired of this," and the like.

I love love love this! I get where this is coming from, so I think...I write, I've cut, and I pray. And I know that feeling, the relief that comes from all three. This is what I ended up with, what keeps me going..."When you can't compose yourself, compose a song."
