Description
God,I can barely remember
when we were strangers
and all I knew was your name.
And I could sit next to you,
and not feel a thing.
I could look in your eyes
and not know exactly what you were thinking.
I wish I could draw out my feelings.
But all I would get
is a mess of paper and pencil
and some scrambled up picture
of demented people
with missing heads and limbs.
Or no faces.
So I write.
Because thereβs something so methodic
about the rolling of a ballpoint pen
running over college ruled paper.
Itβs an antidrug in itself-
rehab in every letter
and safety in every punctuation.
No, not like a cut.
Not like a sharp, shiny razor
slicing a beautifully, unmarked arm.
No, nothing like that.
Nothing compared to the constant typing of words
or the forming of sentences. And thoughts.
So I write.

Ah, this is such a beautiful piece of writing. I feel like this at many times and I'm relieved that others share this feeling too.

It started out wonderfully, but the second half does sound a bit emo-cutting-forced, which I personally didn't really like. But the first part is still great, I can really feel it

I've often felt that writing is both a drug and the antithesis, depending on the writer. Well done.

It's good.
And that's all I can say, because I might be the worst critic ever. I can see errors and corrections, but I really don't see why this should be changed or 'corrected'; if art was correct or made any form of sense, it wouldn't be art. And as for poetry, I always think the writers have a reason for doing what they do, or wanted to write what they wrote because they wanted to, and then who are people to change what other people want?
Good job, ranting aside.

Thank you SO much for understanding. I know, I see errors too, but I'm not going to change them. It's how I wrote the piece originally, and plan to keep it. Thank you.

whoa. i cant even describe how much this makes sense. it explains to us why we write when we have an extreme emotion of some sort whether it is anger, love or sadness. it just makes sense to those of us that write when we've had a bad day. some draw others sing, but i write. thank you for making sense of this

I love the first stanza in particular. Isn't it amazing how hard it can be to pinpoint when a person goes from being not-a-part-of-ourself to someone we wouldn't be our self without.

You're welcome! It's something I've thought about for a long time, and it happens over and over in life, and a rather mysterious process each and every time.
Lovely work.

I am always looking for the words to describe the reason I write. The best I could come up with are "Because I do." A cop out.
This is truth. Thank you for sharing.

Your poem is so beautiful..Writing can truly become something like a great escape. It's not necessarily relief you're feeling, but it's definitely easier to let the words flow on a piece of paper, than throw them in the wind and not be taken to the right place

I can't give anything constructive, since I'm crap at poetry, but this was great to read.
This really explains the feeling writing gives in a moving fashion, its not trite or forced, its just honest and still manages to sound eloquent.
