Description
Finally! You've been waiting for it - and it's here!...and then it turns out there is still to be an addendum on using the GIMP for smoother animating. -.- Will my work NEVER CEASE?
Seriously though, it's a confidence boost when you guys ask for something from me... 'cause it's like, you consider me worthy to give you stuff!
RE: cropping - cropping often causes issues with the Propagate Frame 1 function. Once you have cropped, or (even more risky) modified canvas size with a dialog, make (motion - transparency is unaffected) changes manually - duplicate the first frame, highlight all but the first (click the second, shift+click the last) and modify that. Then, delete the 'old', first frame.
CORRECTION: No browser as of yet supports 0.01s (10ms). Firefox 3, however, does support 0.02ms. Nice! (FF@ supports 0.03s, and FF1 supports 004ms - better than the latest Internet Explorer at 0.06s!)
CORECTION 2: Photoshop CS3 does support wierd framerates after all. When choosing the time for a frame, choose "Other..." and enter it in yourself!

Does this still work on Photoshop CS5?

I don't know. You'd have to tell me. CS3 is what I own.
The reason I specified CS3 because those components aren't available in older versions. For example in CS2, to animate you need to import to ImageReady.

You can't get ImageReady, I tried and it didn't work
But I worked out another way to animate the emotes.

The tutorial doesn't use ImageReady it tells you how to animate internally. Although this is an old tutorial, so the quality is crap and also I'm an idiot.

such a great tutorial, thanks! i finally understand that 'Propergate Frame' thing, haha.
one question - i was making my emote move from one side of the canvus to the other, and when i went to Frame 2 and used Free Transform to move him, it moved him on the first frame as well, even though i un-ticked 'Propergate Frame' for each layer. i read somewhere that Free Transform doesn't work when making animations, because it makes every frame move, if that makes sense. do i have to use another tool to move things in my animation?
i hope i'm not too much of a bother, haha.
thanks!

Emotikonz In reply to erraticstudios [2010-09-25 06:16:23 +0000 UTC]
...also the reason Transform doesn't move the layer is because technically, you are moving PART of the layer - that is, changing the layer itself rather than just its position.

To just move...? The first icon on your toolbar in Photoshop. Drag things around with that.
If you already have a layer selected, you can nudge one pixel at a time using the stand <, >, v and ^ keys.
You can also move/nudge groups, masks (either linked or separate) shape paths and text.

Wow! That's really well done, especially for a first emoticon!
I'd only have two things to recommend - animating back to starting position, and perhaps wrapping their emote hands around each other for a snuggle
Thanks!

Maybe for CS4, but all of mine are in CS3 (as shown on the tab) and it is 0.1... That's 100ms... not so hot. I do stuff in the GIMP. If CS4 supports 0.01sec now, maybe I'll look at getting it...! I want to get a new version of Flash anyway.

kevind23 In reply to Emotikonz [2009-10-12 23:55:56 +0000 UTC]
ah! well I use CS4, so I guess that's what the difference is
I've only made my first emote today (with some inspiration from your tutorials ) but I've dealt with animation before ~ guess I never needed to use small time intervals in older versions
I find it rather ironic, actually, that I use Photoshop and not the GIMP, since I normally use Linux. But I learned how to use Photoshop first... and I was too lazy to bother learning GIMP's controls. As for Flash, I haven't use that since it was still Macromedia's XD

Macromedia's MX is the Flash I have now... but it crashes when ever I click on the toolbox and I can't figure out why.
Photoshop is way easier to animate in the GIMP - if you have it, don't change.

kevind23 In reply to Emotikonz [2009-10-13 00:25:56 +0000 UTC]
Ah, that's one reason why I like Linux... applications are usually pretty vocal about why they're crashing ^^
And I guess that's not surprising, when I first tried the GIMP it confused me (though I've heard it's better now). I don't plan on changing, but I do hope to get better at animating emotes; mine's a little boring

Very nice. I find it educational because I don't use PS, so I get to see and learn how those who do accomplish the same thing.

For graphics, I use an older version of Paint Shop Pro. Actually, I toggle between 6 and 7, since they do things differently. I also use 8 for some advance features and plug-ins that the others don't support.
For animation, I use Animation Shop. I use the versions that same with the ones above, but I recently found a link to a legal free copy of a newer version. It's still several years old, but it gives me some added bells and whistles.
A friend gave me a copy of an OLD version of PS so I could open .psd files. Haven't played with it. I know I need to use it someday, but I'm fast on the programs I use, so I'm hesitant to switch now.

The GIMP can open *.psd files too, and it is FREE.

Well, I did find a viewer that opens .psd files and was using that with a cut-and-paste.
I tried GIMP once a few years ago. Hated the controls. I hear the newer versions are better, but I'm hesitant since I had such a bad first experience with it. :/

Yeah, same here. The floating windows drove me NUTS because the canvas kept popping in front of tools with all the floating windows... the windows still float separately, but now that canvas stays at the back so you can make it fill the screen. And it is a HECK OF A LOT easier to use than the last time I tried it... sheesh!

That's what I heard, that they made it better. I should download it just for the heck of it.
Believe it or not, I heard the Paint.net is awesome. Not so much the core, but the fact that there are tons of user-developed plug-ins that can bring it up to near PS level. I do need to try a few new programs just to see what they can do. It's just that I'm such a terrible creature of habit. I detest change.

Haven't tried Paint.NET... didn't work on my computer. But yeah, I have heard great things about that too. I am also a creature of habit... usually very bad habit. I mean habits. Yes. That one.
