Ekino was one of many cubs the large vanner, Pinetop had birthed, and certainly not the last. Of his cub mates, he was the most curious and troublesome, sneaking from the den under the nose of his dam. This started nearly as soon as the young vanner cub could see, although blurrily, and then the world was his to explore. His first outings consider of just a few steps from the warmth of Pine’s side, and soon when his dam had slept, the little vanner ventured farther out. He never quite made it fully from the den, for as soon Pine would notice his absence, she would come and gather him back to her side.

It would be many more weeks before the cub got his first taste of the outside world, and when he neared almost a month old, that chance came. Although it was with his littermates, Ekino made it outside! At first the light, sounds, and smells overwhelmed the small cub, but he soon became accustomed, his desire to travel becoming evident once more as the cub set out as fast as his short and chubby legs could carry him. He’d made it out of sight of the den, although not out of view of watchful Pinetop, finding a rather rocky spot to lay himself down, a bone not too far off as the taiga gnawed futilely on the end, his teeth sharp, but not strong enough to crack it. Once bored of the activity, the vanner cub stood and went to rummaging around the small patches of grass and piles of rocks, perhaps for a bug, or some other delicious treat before his dam found him once more and returned the wandering cub to the den. It seemed, however, that while watchful, Pine preoccupied herself with tending to the more wary cubs, seeking to nudge them from the mouth of the den and into the sunlight.
