The slight warmth of the Summer had soon given way to the first chills of Fall. While most things in Beorg were covered in snow, Iona had made a point to travel to a bit of a warmer area, still bordering the mountains, but safe enough to deliver her foal. She’d made preparations to birth at the ruins, but it had quickly gotten rather cold and they were running short of materials to burn in the brazier. They had to seek warmer places, so Iona, Kari, Risk, and Bassi had departed the caves.

It couldn’t be helped, and while she was heavily pregnant, suffering from a few too many contractions on the way to the fields she’d chosen, she’d made it. She’d no sooner found a soft patch to lie in, when the foal decided it was time to see the world. Bassi at first stood in awe and confusion as he’d not known what to do while Iona labored and groaned. Kari had nudged him to keep watch after a moment, and then gone to the buckskin side. Risk had found her time better occupied with exploring.

A few words of encouragement, and after the longest hour in Iona’s life, her foal was born. He was small, mottled in appearance, with his own raggedy mop of hair and markings akin to bother her and Bassi’s. While his colors were certainly intriguing, a small light gray dunskin in comparison to her Buckskin and his Grullo. The baby sneezed as she cleaned his fur, and soon she directed the newborn to her side, showering him in a hundred kisses and whispered praise.

Kari had nickered to Bassi to come closer, as he’d moved off to the top of a hill to watch, he’d noticed a pair of mares galloping towards the nearby lake. They couldn’t have been much danger, they seemed to be on a mission wherever they were going, and so he turned his attention to Iona and the foal. Stifling a smile, he made his way to the new mother and baby, inspecting both, despite Kari’s assurance they were both healthy and well. He had to be sure. He’d nudged Iona a few times, whispering to her about the blood left from the birth, only to have the mare grumble at him.

“I’m fine. That’s just part of the process.” She didn’t feel much like moving, the labor having sapped her energy. “I just need to take a nap, keep watch for me, Bassi?”

He didn’t want to leave her side, but once more, ever persistent and annoying Kari had ushered him away.

“Keep watch. That’s what stallions are for. They’ll both be fine, the foal just needs to find his legs, and Iona need a good nap.” He’d grumbled his disagreement, turning his head again to scan for the strange mares, he’s instead found Risk prancing about, with another foal. Where were they all coming from.

Without a further thought, he’d trotted over, nickering at the two fillies to not frighten them, though he looked his fair share of intimidating. “What’s going on here?” He questioned, eying Risk and then the strange new red roan filly.

“I found a playmate! We’re playing hide and seek! I found her again.” Risk explained, prancing around Bassi and smiling at the shy filly who looked at him.

“Where’d this playmate come from?”

“I’m from.. um.. Mearc.” She stated after a thoughtful pause.

“Mearc?”

“Yes, the plains, west of here.”

“Why aren’t you with your parents, like you should be?”

“Well…I…” The foal started to mumble, looking down at the ground.

Risk stepped over nudging her shoulder, “It’s okay, we can hang together if you’d like?” Little fillies had to stick together after all, the world was dangerous and full of things meaner than Bassi, even if he seemed to be the meanest thing at the moment.

“Bassi, She’s going to stay with me for a little while! We could all take a nap! Are you tired?” Risk asked the other foal, who nodded quietly. They’d both started to make their way over to the resting Iona, and with a roll of his eyes, Bassi followed. No way he’d let some strange horse, foal or not, near his newborn without standing guard.
