Description Now in Technicolor!

Really, I just wanted an excuse to draw the Animorphs again after my first attempt four years ago . I consider this drawing a way to pay homage to my favorite series growing up, and to poke fun at myself. Because...well...really, like Michael, I love a good conspiracy. The more I kept thinking about one coincidence, the more others started becoming obvious to me. (The one about Jace and Tobias is part in-joke with my friends, and part spoilerific similarities.)

The X-Men Evolution similarities are for another day.

And if you have no idea what Animorphs is...allow me to enlighten you .

Thanks! Anomalies is my own story that I'm writing.

...I didn't get it until I got to Ax, and then everything just became suddenly so clear to me. ._.

I'm sure it'll be fine. *pats you*

EmpressFunk In reply to hawberries [2009-09-18 08:44:23 +0000 UTC]

Haha, bless Ax. Both he and Tobias are such clear representations of their book series--like mascots, but less degrading.

Anyway. I'm babbling. Thanks!

It's because they're the most recognisably set-design ones, I think. Jake could just be a cute brown-haired guy, of which there are rather a lot in fiction, etc, etc, but Ax is a friggin' Andalite. He's not really mistakable. xD

EmpressFunk In reply to hawberries [2009-09-18 19:22:22 +0000 UTC]

So, true. "Oh, a dark-haired guy, a blonde, a black girl--holy crap, is that an Andalite?!"

Oh, it's all good. it'll be fine as long as you keep a level head in dealing with the hardcore Animorph fans. Which, by the way, there isn't as many as there once was. But, we all know you're awesome and can deal with idiots.

EmpressFunk In reply to XskyeX [2009-09-18 07:51:28 +0000 UTC]

Haha, well--considering I'm a bit of a softcore (?) Animorphs fan myself, hopefully they wouldn't eat me alive. Maybe we could geek out together and it'd be enough to distract them from the similarities.

*sigh* This always happens to me
Keep on writing, though. This story is great!

Thanks very much! I just have to continue to write and make sure I'm telling my own story, and not someone else's.

Haha--I was surprised by how many similarities I could find--and by "surprised" I mean, "Freaked out." I could probably find more if I thought hard enough.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Oh man, I've had a lot of moments like that while writing my book, but like a friend told me on a particularly headdesk-y day: "There's no such thing as an original idea, just original execution." I think that goes for characters as well, y/n? ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EmpressFunk In reply to jinebiebe-arekisu [2009-09-18 07:34:48 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that's very true. I majored in English and when I actually managed to occasionally due my reading, you could definitely see the similarities in many different stories, but they were always executed differently. It's reassuring.

berg-ulme In reply to ??? [2009-09-17 18:26:32 +0000 UTC]

I didn't read Animorphs. I was to busy with Harry Potter and everything Camelot-related. Animorphs weren't "That thing" in Germany as it was in the US.

I thought all the time you were copying X-men Evolution...

EmpressFunk In reply to berg-ulme [2009-09-17 18:30:19 +0000 UTC]

Lol, there's some X-Men Evo in there for sure, but that's a comic for another day.

XD Funny coincidence - I'm just reading Animorphs right now. (I'm sick, and it's a light read that keeps me entertained. XD)
I think you'll be fine, though, really. Anomalies is different enough.

EmpressFunk In reply to MicrosuedeMouse [2009-09-17 18:32:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's definitely a series I can just read at random--about a month ago I re-read the Andalite Chronicles on a whim an rediscovered my crush on Elfangor.

And thanks!

Hah, cool. My cousin gave my brothers every Animorph book he owned (I don't know if it's all of them, but it's definitely a lot) and it turns out I'm enjoying them more than my brothers are. XD

Welcome!

ladylunatick In reply to ??? [2009-09-17 14:35:44 +0000 UTC]

xDDD I love Anomalies, and I loved Animorphs, so by extension I love this twice over. I would say "especially the Marco/Cody panel" but I really love all of them.

While I do understand your apprehension, I would say not to worry about it. There are a lot of books (movies, comics, tv shows...) with similar casts. And I for one believe that the plots are very different.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EmpressFunk In reply to ladylunatick [2009-09-18 07:18:08 +0000 UTC]

Haha, thanks very much! I wouldn't mind you picking the Marco/Cody panel as your favorite--I'm inclined to agree just because Marco was my favorite character.

To be honest, drawing out this comic was very cathartic, because while I was thinking of their similarities, I was also thinking of what made them different as I drew them.

A-as long as there are no Yeerks, it's all still good! ...I could never read Animorphs as a child because the Yeerks /freaked/ me out.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EmpressFunk In reply to nekobecki [2009-09-17 18:18:08 +0000 UTC]

Damn, I was going to include a secret race of slug-like parasites who invaded people's minds and made them slaves inside their own heads, but that'd probably be a little to similar, huh?

When I was younger, Animorphs was fine, but I never wanted to read those Fear Street books by R.L. Stine.

LucidBlueAni In reply to ??? [2009-09-17 12:53:24 +0000 UTC]

Oh god, I do this all the time when I'm writing. All I can see is similarities between my stuff and other peoples. Don't worry though, I'm sure you're plot and writing is different enough.

On another note, very amusing. Especially the last panel. (It would probably be funnier if I remembered anything about animorphs...)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EmpressFunk In reply to LucidBlueAni [2009-09-17 18:16:35 +0000 UTC]

Isn't it maddening? Especially when it's like, "Oh, dammit. If I'm seeing it, other people must too! I'm a fraud!" But then you realize your character has blue eyes and their character has green and everything's okay.

I remember bits and pieces and some very large chunks, but I never actually read the last 5-10 books, so there are some things I only have a basic knowledge about.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LucidBlueAni In reply to EmpressFunk [2009-09-18 02:44:54 +0000 UTC]

Ha, exactly! After I see connections like this, I have to spent so much time talking myself out of my doubt.

If I recall correctly, I just saw the tv show, and maybe read a few books. And there was a video game...I remember the video game. It was infuriating.

I can see that they try very hard. But they just can't catch a break can, they?

Iwrin In reply to ??? [2009-09-17 10:07:14 +0000 UTC]

Aaah, relax, as long as the plot is different, you're fine This happens to lot of writers...they are deeply affected by something they loved and it just stays in their minds. But if you know that the influence is there, better for you, at least you can prevent yourself from making it too similar. Yo'll be fine, don't worry

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EmpressFunk In reply to Iwrin [2009-09-17 16:56:19 +0000 UTC]

Haha, thanks. I think I just sat down one day and kept thinking about all the similarities, getting more and more panicked as I did. Let's not even get into X-Men...

But thank you! It's my intention to steer away from being a carbon copy, but I don't mind a little homage to my favorite series growing up.

Jordan's scene made me giggle madly.

Don't worry about the similarities. If you do get published, a lot of people won't even notice the subtle things like that. Most people can't even remember
Animorphs! D:>

EmpressFunk In reply to EVIL-DEATH-FAIRY [2009-09-17 16:54:27 +0000 UTC]

Everyone should remember Animorphs! I was reading it again recently--it's still good, after all these years.

But thank you!
