Hmmmmm......
But they believe in machine spirits and hey: Who has a greater spirit than the R2 trashcan? Who couldn`t love him? And techpriests believe in the "personality" of machines too, so it`s totally fine to me and shall be written lore and canon from now on, that R2 is a 40k character as well from now to the end of all time.
Period. I have spoken!

Anything lacking a machine spirit (which is either a human brain or part of it stuck into tech and trapped there for the rest of its existence) is tech heresy. At best R2 gets dissected as heretical Xenos technology.

I heard the marsian toasterlovers believe that even rather simple mechanisms and machines (like bolters or lasguns for example) own a machine spirit. No need to attach neurological bio units like brains to them...
I mean hey: They even say prayers and talk to engines and gears like they were individuals and in the end R2 is "just" a machine too like a calculator, a picter unit or an auspex, which wouldn`t get burned or dissected by a techpriest because they lack of brainmatter. His "personality" is no a.i., it could just be considered as his machine spirit or simply his programming.
But most of all: He`s sooo cute and round and brave and.....

That's because all Imperial technology uses human brain tissue on some level to function. The soul within the machine exists because somebody had their brain ripped from their body and transplanted into a machine. Worshiping lasguns and bolters is merely a side-affect of the superstition due to cleaning manuals being turned into prayers and song for easy memorization even if digital records are destroyed.

---*Warning: Nerd modus of "Grootekloet" engaged!*---
First of all, take a look at this: warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Ma…
You`ll see, that it has nothing to do with any kind of brainmatter or other bio-tissue at all. It also says, that "some machines are allowed a limited form of independant intelligence under the guise of having an especially active Machine Spirit." Boing!
Maybe you mixed it up with the servitors that are in fact just fleshpuppets and operate with what is left of their lobotomized and manipulated and augmented brains as their "cogitators", or something else, like the dreadnoughts or the titans moderati. And I know, that 40k lore changes from time to time, but I`m into this kind of stuff since `92 and like _I said: I never heard about this before.
But if I should be wrong, (what is quite possible, I mean I`m not perfect or something) then I would be glad if you post a link or something so I could read something about brains and stuff in every imperial machine and mechanism, like you just mentioned it. I did a search myself and only found stuff about moderati, dreads, servitors and so on, but not about the need or existence of such things everywhere in every tool and machine in 40k. And then I will apologize for my words here respectfully. But I`ve read maybe all the novels and codizes and stuff and never heard of what you were trying to tell me.
Oh, and if it was just a joke I didn`t understand, then please forgive me, but english isn`t my native language, so I don`t get everything right all the time.
And I don`t want to make you look in a negative way or something, I just want to point on something that you might got wrong and that needs a little correction or it would get spread around and others believe it too and spread it further and so on. Or otherwise I would like to get corrected myself by you, because I`m wrong about it, but therefore I would have to take a look at something written about it first.
All in a respectful way. No offense intendet. Each one should teach one.
Oh how much I love this kind of conversations.
