Description
Some shots of my JGSDF Type 74. Overall I was pretty happy with how it came out, and I learned a few new ticks in the process. Given the age of the kit I was happy it featured some cool details and figurines. However my flat top coat reacted to my "mud" in a kind of weird way and made some of it a bit lighter(live and lean XD) it also came with a couple sets of ski's that I have hoarded away for next winter. I painted it in the same scheme as my Stryker, and is now part of my imaginary unnamed "medium green" armored core.Related content

tank looks okay.
but why are the bags and uniform glossy?

thanks! for the kits age/price i was happy with the level of detail.
its something to do with that color paint(model masters forest green), and i couldn't correct the problem. no matter what i couldn't cut down the gloss(even after 3 coats of dull coat) its really weird because i haven't run into that before but didn't notice in till everything was painted and flat coat applied.

Nice detailing on this one and that mud is an excellent touch, it even looks a lot like rusted metal.

thank you very much! its fun experimenting with the mud, kinda tricky sometimes but rewarding, i think it adds alot to the overall model.

thanks man, leaning about applying mud effects has been pretty fun and adds alot to the build IMO. still not perfect tho and alot more practice and experimentation is needed.
knew you would have the keen eye and memory to spot my miss matched decals XD yea this one came with a kinda bare bones sheet and air craft making are just too cool!(think the symbol on the front came from a zero too lol)

yea i saw that! as soon as it hits state side ill most likely be picking it up. tho i might wait to see what after market(if any) comes out too, seems like the JGSDF aftermarket goes outta stock pretty fast or is hard to find. i was lucky and got a type 90 with tons of beautiful photo etched at a con( it was $30!)

BlueFox284 In reply to enc86 [2013-05-03 02:58:25 +0000 UTC]
Well, maybe some link-by-link tracks might be available. . . or an aluminium barrel. Hard to say. I dunno if I'd wait till it hits the states- Price will be marked up The Yen is weaker than the dollar now, so buying in Japan means yours dollars buy more!
I scored a bunch of Tamiya tools and probably saved $30+.

yea someone will come out with a detail set. a aluminum barrel would be cool but i am more interested in the photo etched grills and junk.
yea i know alot of you guys use hobbylink, ill have to give them a try at some point. most of the time i use one good site because of the prices and its technically local to me(about 2 hours away)

i have been thinking about doing a comprehensive WIP/Tutorial at some point. i am kind of a crappy writer tho and the write ups for tutorials seem to take me FOREVER XD at some point ill get around to it.
in the mean time is there any particular tutorial you would like t see me do?

Way cool - great to take on a kit that most people won't (as everyone seems to go for US, Russian, British, and then probably Chinese tanks)!

i built a JGSDF type 87 awhile back and learn a bit about them. really like the Japaneses modern designs, very innovative and high tec. often overlooked but great and interesting armor.

lol you are the second person to say that. yea i have been quite busy around my property so i am usually quite tired in the evenings. didn't really work on this too much over the last couple weeks. if i had not been so beat i probably could of built this over a weekend.
anyways i am almost caught up on yard work so ill be back full swing by next week.

i am still primary using the Mr.hobby "MR Super clear" for the top flat coat. i should be getting the testors in a few days. i might have to try to use them in combination. i really love what the Mr.hobby does to the paint job but is the brand that does odd things to rubber and mud effects. its weird sometimes it acts up and sometimes not. on all my test/scrap pieces the mud came out all uniform good color but on the tank it made it whitish in some spots....
i picked up some of the new "krylon Color Maters" flat stuff, that i still gotta test out too but doesn't look to provide a good flat finish, but might seal things in good. we will see.

I need to familiarize myself with these Japanese tanks! At a distance, I thought it was Russian/Chinese (mostly due to the general shape and partly due to the same nomenclature which Chinese tanks also use), but nevertheless, another excellent build. Keep up the good work!

yea the JGSDF is pretty cool and have some interesting designs. they tend to use a mash-up of "best-of" design ideas. this 74 really has that sloped low profile that the Russians tend to use.
I have a JGSDF type-90 in my stash and that is killer main battle tank!
