Description
Some shots of my JGSDF Type 74. Overall I was pretty happy with how it came out, and I learned a few new ticks in the process. Given the age of the kit I was happy it featured some cool details and figurines. However my flat top coat reacted to my "mud" in a kind of weird way and made some of it a bit lighter(live and lean XD) it also came with a couple sets of ski's that I have hoarded away for next winter. I painted it in the same scheme as my Stryker, and is now part of my imaginary unnamed "medium green" armored core.Related content

it's a thermal viewer for night and cold conditions and a thermal sleeve on the barrel to mask its heat as well.
pretty cool tank tec for back in the 70's-80's.

Can I ask how did you do the mud? a textured paint or a mix of things?

it was kind of a mix of stuff(and looked much better before my top coat reacted weird with it) anyways i am gonna copy/past from a comment i wrote when i was asked about this before but if you have any questions feel free to ask away!
i did two different mud effects on this one. i am still experimenting and learning so experiment some for your self as well but here is what i did to get you started...
the mud splatter: its pastel dust, small amount of fine real dirt and rubbing alcohol mixed up and flicked on to the kit with an old tooth brush. the alcohol evaporates and leaves the mud specks in place.
the thick stuff(on fenders and tracks, ect)fine real dirt(that i dried out for a few days) pastel dust for color, and some white glue(elmers glue) and a bit of water mixed up and globed on with an old #2 brush. i had to do it in layers and took a few different batches to get it the way i wanted it.
after everything is dried on i sprayed a matt top coat to seal it all in. also it might be a good idea to spray vinyl tracks with flat black before adding the mud, not sure if the mix will stick to that rubber.

It is, but is hell on the road, people always honking their horn for you to pull out of the way, but luckily turning the turret around solves that problem

i am kinda starting out myself, and have only been building armor for a little over a year. Staring out buy a "Tamiya" brand model, you cant go wrong.
if you ever have any questions dont be afraid to ask!

wow,As we Chinese say "Tong Zi Gong (Kids Kung Fu or INCREDIBLE KIDS) ", when I was a little boy, I also like to do model, but don't do slowly after school (our country student's study pressure big, until now I have no time after work, so I can stick to do something I like as a child is really not easy. I envy you very much

Great work! The dirt and mud effects are wonderful. Spray some matte finish on this bad boy to tone down the shiny parts and it'll pop even more!
I also enjoy Japanese tanks (both IJA and JGSDF). BTW, the other neat thing about the Type 74 was that it could raise and lower its suspension. Here's a video of this feature in action: [link]

Thank you very much. i sprayed "Mr.super clear flat" on everything but for some reason anything that was painted in "forest green"(backpacks, uniforms) remained glossy. i am not sure why, i even spayed the backpacks a few times but nothing seemed to work....very odd.
i saw that, it really is a interesting feature. this kit came a jig and options to raise and lower its elevation but it would have to be fixed and i wanted some outside adventures for it lol.

Aw, yeah, I feel your pain. That's happened to me plenty of times also. For some reason there are just times when something just won't "take". I just had a small Sherman dio returned to me that I gave to my girl's grandfather (he worked on them in Korea). He died, so I got it back and man, it's shiiiiiny! lol And I was remembering, yep, Mr. Super Clear Flat. I think that's why I pretty much only airbrush flat coats now because it doesn't seem to happen as much as with cans.

good to know.. i just hate it when things react weird. i practice stuff on scraps but some times forget to see how secondary or accent colors will react. i will be picking up some diffrent brands for the future, cause Mr.super has done odd things with my mud and even melted the rubber on some tire's before.
yea one of these days i am gonna find space and get an airbrush, but for now i am stuck with rattle cans and hand painting.

Oh yeah, rubber tires can never be trusted with Gunze rattle cans. Or water based washes, or certain powders! lol Such finicky stuff! For that matter, it's usually a good idea to replace rubber stuff with resin or similar replacements because sometimes the rubber itself can react with the plastic over the years and the model eats itself. When I bought my M1070 w/ HETS, the first thing I did was replace those 20+ wheels with resin versions...

good to know. lol they always make this big deal about a kit coming with them but i really hate them, good to know that i wasn't doing anything wrong and they are just crap.

Bang-Doll-SSI In reply to enc86 [2013-05-06 14:51:55 +0000 UTC]
lol Yeah, I have no idea why they always talk up the rubber tires when the first thing everybody does is trash them for resin replacements. Aside from the whole eating-plastic-and-degrading-over-time thing, rubber can't depict things like the slight flattening at the bottom to depict a vehicle's weight. This as opposed to simoly heating the plastic or resin and pressing down to make the weight bulge (if it's not already molded in). Here's a link to the M1070 wheels so you can see the difference... some of the "rust" effects was by accident, my top coat reacted weird on some spots, so it was a leaning experience XD
the tank was painted in "Model Masters, Medium Green" enamel. same color as the Stryker i did. gonna have to come up with an adventure for them. i really like that color so i will most lily be painting more stuff in that color.

I really like the mud too. Very realistic in my opinion.
And I also love the piece of leather in the back of the turret, looks very lifelike.
The vehicle kind of reminds me of the Leopard 1 concerning general shape...

yea the leather was kind of an experiment. its tissue paper that was hardened with white glue....i wanted to do a bit more but the basket on this one is really small and weird shaped.
yea the JGSDF uses "best-of" armor designs with their tanks. think it shares a very very similar hull.

Can I ask what kind of lighting setup you use? Do you have a softbox? Multiple softboxes? When I photograph my work I tend to use shadow for dramatic effect, but sometimes that doesn't work that well and I'd be better off with softer diffused lighting.

i use a very cheap and makeshift set up [link] and i use free software to edit and punch up the details a bit.
i am still really new to this kinda photography and only been doing it for a few months.
