Description

Leave it to Japan to not only be the first to come up with giant humanoid mechs, but dino mechs. I would of liked to be in the room when the engineers decided it would be a wise tactical decision to draw up the plans for a giant mechanized death dino robot. Armed with a sniper pule cannon, bean gatling guns and more missiles than you would need. A radome provides battlefield date and advanced targeting. This is one mecha dinosaur that's not going extinct without a fight.

This is my finished HMM 1/72 Zoids: Gun Sniper Naomi Custom with Wild Wiesel Unit by Kotobukiya (now that is a mouthful lol) painted in the scheme of "let’s use up paint I have on hand". Painted with Tamiya spray cans, hand painted with model master enamels and weathered with artist acrylics. This kit only came with stickers so the decals are from my hoard. Mostly 1/35 JGSDF and 1/48 mig markings (I think) overall I am pretty dang happy with the model and outcome. Lots of cool parts, poseability and overall badass design to him. I did have a few nitpicks with the model kit itself(figurine, stickers,$$$,plastic nub placement) also this guy came with many more  guns(to the point  I was worried he would look a little to ridiculous, even for me) and a couple of said guns were bent on the runner. So I thought I would not waste time fixing those parts, and just leave them off. I’ll just save his extra weapons, because you know at some point ill have much more fun slapping them on a tank.
At the end of the day I am happy I tried something new, picked this guy up and gave it a go. If I see one of the bigger zoids on sale someday, ill would defiantly get another one.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Americans!
As always questions, comments and suggestions welcome.

The paint scheme reminds me of that desert Gun Sniper I did back waaaaay back when using the original Zoid (HMM kits didn't exist yet)....

That is awesome! I always loved this show, a couple days I was down a thrift store and saw the box for one of the giant lygers ( I was like, thank you god I always wanted this! ) and then I finally got to it and they wanted 5.00 for a freakin empty box!

Thanks dude! this was my first zoid, so i was a unsure of my self(different scale than i am use to) sure it could of been a bit better but i was pretty happy how this one turned out. next zoid ill have to crank it to 11! XD

ohhhh man i really like the ligers! they are pretty damn impressive and have  BIG boxes. lol what a dirty trick with it being an empty box(still i bet that box was hella cool lol) would of been super lucky to find one for $5, as alot of the time the liger kits are anywhere from $70-100 usa dollars. i know as  i have one in my stash Model Stash Overload XD
tho keep your eye out, i found mine on amazon prime for a pretty decent price(i hate getting kits shipped from over seas, as it takes FOREVER)

It's all good, I can't imagine Zoids being all that well known. It kind of aired alongside Gundam and DBZ in the states, so it got overshadowed like crazy.

Looking forward to seeing your Panzer. But if you're looking for mecha dinosaurs, check out the Berserk Fury (Fuehrer outside the States). It's a lanvander colored T-Rex that has 2 cannon/shield generator/drills attached to it's back and a "Charged Particle Cannon" housed in it's mouth. Had one of those too, but I got it on clearance from Walmart. Unfortunately, it wasn't only missing the pilot, eye piece, and instructions, it was also missing a vital piece that connected the tail (which I only discovered after piecing the rest together).

yea i can see that. i remember my dad had a kit from the 80's(my memorys bad and were talking early 90's) and thats pretty much all i new of them till i got into scale models. tho now that i have gone digging for them/know what to look for, they have a bigger fan base than i had realsied. from a just a builder/painting point of view, these models(Kotobukiy) are very very nice. just about stand toe to toe with some bandai kits.

thanks man, its been sitting on my shelf, eying me.
ahhhhhh man, i do know that one and was on my watch list. that one is freaking nutty XD
ohhhhh thats a real shame dude and really sucks. well when you got the cash you should treat yourself(tho this time get it from like amazon or wherever) you will be in for a fun time.

For me, I caught Zoids one day while watching Toonami (I was in a hospital at the time) and mom picked up one of the cheaper kits, not realizing that it was a model. Also how I ended up getting into model kits, though I don't have the money to really support it alongside my gaming "addiction." lol. That said, I've only ever touched a Hasbro Zoid kit (and SD Gundam kits) and the Kotobukiy kits kind of intimidate me.

I've been looking for the Hasbro kits (want to start back up with something familiar, you know), but can't seem to find them at reasonable prices anywhere. The Berserk Fury (Hasbro) kit alone is like $150. Would love to pick it up and finally complete it though.

hi there I see that mentioned to you that I might know more about zoids and were to find them cheep well to start I use eBay and Amazon a lot for Hasbro kits though the un-built ones are a bit pricey depending on the size of the kit, also  the members of zoids poison sell extra kits they acquire, if you're willing to put effort in to the shopping yahoo Japan has really cheap prices the shipping though can be a bear I recommend a secondary shipper to receive the items then bulk ship to you, and finally I also sell spare kits I have that I get in lots I buy.

ahhhhh, very cool. it seems like Toonami really touched and exposed alot of people to anime.
i could see how one of those kits would be intimidating, but they are designed in a way that's hard to mess them up(unless you are doing full paintjob) for the most part even with your experince i think you could do one, as long as you took your time. maybe not try to do them in one sitting.
LOL  gaming "addiction", i know about that friend(seen some pics in your gallery as well) befor i picked up scale modeling, gaming was my only hobby. and when i am not building/painting i am playing games, i have a pretty massive collection as well.

yea every time i see them, they are quite $$$.
but knows a TON more than i do about zoids, he might have a better lead on where to find them.

(sorry the reply took so long, forgot about DeviantArt after some drama)

It really did. Haven't meet many people my age who didn't get into anime through Toonami as a kid.

That's reassuring. Now it's just a toss up between buying the Shadow Fox or the S.H. Figuarts Android 17 Android #17 before it's price reaches Freeza's.

My game collection has grown much, much larger than what it was in those pictures (like, 120+ games and a new console bigger lol). I joke about addiction, but then I look to my shelf and realize that I moved all the games to a CD case to conserve space.

Thanks. I'll see what I can find with his advice.

When I first saw this, I thought, "Wow, it's surprising to see a model from this fellow that looks so CLEAN and plasticky.  Usually, there's so much weathering and post-apoc stuff, and ..."  Then I saw your note about weathering, and I decided I needed to take a closer look, so I used the Download option.

Whoa!  The weathering detail is splendid!  It's like you've taken the usual crazy toy look of Zoids and then gave it an unexpectedly realistic look with all the dents and dings and scour marks.  The "thumbnail" image (at least on my little monitor) just doesn't do justice to the detail work.  I'm glad I took the time to look at the higher-resolution version.

Also, I confess to an odd fascination with Zoids.  They make so little sense, but they're still delightful and seem to pull together so much about what I think about when I think of "cool Japanese toys."    I have a couple of the cheaper American-released Zoids toys, and your treatment of this here makes me entertain the notion of going and trying to give one of them a proper paint job.  (It's not likely to happen, since I don't have a proper airbrush setup, and I really haven't mastered the skills necessary for painting model kits such as this, but it's still a fun "what-if" notion to entertain.    )

enc86 In reply to JordanGreywolf [2015-01-25 16:03:33 +0000 UTC]

wow, tanks a ton for downloading and checking out the work!

this kit was pretty fun and i tried to load it up on the weathering and effects. it was a little hard for me as it was my first zoid and a scale i am not use to(1/72). i would of posted a higher resolution photo but da has those stupid guidelines about me using photos for my front page(has to be under 900) so sometimes the photo will be a high res(depending on which camera i use as well) but i have to uploaded it smaller if i want to ever use it on my home page.
feel like for the most part the zoid came out pretty good but being my first i held back a bit. i recently picked up a bigger and more badass zoid kit, so when i do that one i hope to improve and add even more effects. 99% of the zoids i see are in pop or bright colors, so i had fun and will have fun making more in military colors.

i totally get what you are saying about zoids. i have had little expose to them(haven't watched the shows, and my dad had one of the older models) but i have seen them around over the years and they left quite the impression. something about mecha animals and dinos that's so crazy and over the top, but has soo much charm and awesome they really just work.

you don't really need an airbrush for one of these(can help a ton tho) this zoid i built using left over spray paint for the base colors and the detail was hand painted. so don't rule it out as i am sure you would have tons of fun with one of these kits. the only big negatives about a kit like this are the $$$ and complexity. it doe s require the model to built in a different fashion than the directions if you want to paint . but some patience or working on a simpler kit first, it would make working on one a great project.

*edit due to my very poor grammar and spelling

Re: Paints:
My acrylic brush methods don't work very well at all for large, smooth surfaces (such as to be found on vehicles), so I often have to rely on spray paint for that instead, on the rare occasion I have a large vehicle to fix up for a scenario, etc.  I just haven't found a very good way to make forced shadows ... but then, if the model is large enough, maybe that isn't strictly necessary anyway.

One of these days I want to try experimenting with "rust" effects when making "distressed" models.  I've heard that some nice effects can be achieved by first painting an undercoat, sprinkling with salt, and then spray-painting the overcoat -- and I guess when the salt dissolves, or the paint right over the salted areas fails to adhere properly, it makes some convincing-looking "corrosion" effects.  I probably should do some Google searching to see if I can find some sort of tutorial on the method.

enc86 In reply to JordanGreywolf [2015-01-26 17:56:34 +0000 UTC]

i have never had any luck with acrylics and large surface areas. some good flat brushes and enamel paint works pretty good IMO. most of my models in my gallery were hand painted with enamel paints(minus primer/flat black ect). i have only recently switched over to cans mostly as time saving. all the detail work and such is still pretty much painted by hand.

i have seen that effect and it looks really great. i haven't tried it out for myself yet but i really should Google myself and give it a shot.

JordanGreywolf In reply to enc86 [2015-01-28 16:50:32 +0000 UTC]

I suppose I need to try out some enamels for larger models, and see how they work.  I suppose there's a REASON that enamels are typically the paints presented by default for painting models, after all.    Unfortunately, my earliest attempts at assembling and painting models were utter disasters, and thus I've come to associate modelling glue and enamels with disastrous failure, and to lean more heavily upon the materials I had to work with once I got into painting minis years later.

Acrylics, however?  They seem to be best for rippled and detailed surfaces, where washes and dry-brushing techniques have value.  For smooth surfaces of any appreciable size (and here I immediately get into problems even when I'm dealing with figures such as Warhammer 40K "Space Marines" and their big shoulder pads), regular craft acrylics just don't quite cut it -- they dry fast and unevenly, so the brush marks really show (where parts were thicker or thinner, with the flow of the brush), and by the time repeated coats can at least smooth out the opacity of the color, they start getting to be thick enough to obscure finer details.

A friend of mine uses an airbrush for his larger models (be they Tyranid aliens, or Warhammer 40K Imperial Guard tanks and Valkyrie transports) and he gets some stunning results -- but then he just has me paint in the fine details with my acrylics (nose art, spots of color for control panels, etc.), unless decals can do the trick.  I'd post some of those, but it would be a case of, "Actually, almost all of this work is my friend's ... and I just did the little bitty spots of detail in the lower-right portion of the picture," and that would seem kind of sketchy.  ;D

enc86 In reply to JordanGreywolf [2015-01-29 16:44:03 +0000 UTC]

plus here in the states enamels are pretty easy to come by. i tend to use alot of the MM("model master" line)
trust me when i say, most of my first models were pretty dang disastrous failures as well.  as for glue, i use to fear it as well, till i switched over to "Tamiya extra thinn"  for most tasks. that stuff is the bomb and gives you alot better bond and control over the glue.

i totally agree with you on acrylics for detail and washes. 90% of my washes are from arctic art paint. easy clean up and using water to thin it is optimal for me when weathering. as of right now i like to paint a model with 3 diffrent kinds of paint(kind of in layers due to the thinners involved) when i can i do the base color/colors in lacquer (or enamels, but i like lacquer alot) then paint details/some weathering with enamels, then water based acrylics for washes and other weathering.

i have an airbrush but i still haven't got around to making a booth or place i can set up and spray(do cans in my cold barn) you can really get get results and get cost/time saving coverage. i have some kits in my stash that i have to wait for me to get that all set up cause i don't want to take any chances(1/500 yamato namely) still i think alot of the time people rule out what you can do by hand alot.

yea the only real negative i have with this/other zoid kits is the price. not to be snobby but i think by this point in my hobby, i have become sort of a scale  plastic connoisseur. this kit while really nice and of high quality, was not worth the suggested retail price(tho i got mine on sale) keep your eye out tho, as i got mine off amanzon for well under what i have seen it go for.
