Description
Name: Gaea
Pseudonym(s): Goddess of Earthen Magic
Height / Foot Size: ~60 foot tall / N/A (13 feet long)
Info: The Blackwoods. A place where all supernatural and bizarre things thrive, the forest itself seeming to hum with a magical life unseen anywhere else in the known world. Gaea, the Goddess of Earthen Magic, is told to have once governed an unformed Earth from this very place, treating all of its living things with love and care. She was seemingly responsible for the creation of what would eventually become the modern era’s flora and fauna. It was even rumored that she split Pangaea herself into today’s continents when she made room for the vast oceans between us.
This is known, at least to its current denizens. And yet, not even they know the true story.
Once upon a time, Gaea would awaken as often as every century or two as a mother checking in on her children. Nature would flourish especially during her arisen moments. However, as Earth would come to exist for eons more, she would feel herself growing wearier with time. She knew that eventually, the day must come that she would rest for much longer.
It was before her first Great Slumber that she created our ancestors-- the Faeries. Magical, sentient bipedal beings that tended to boast animal-like features, who would watch over all of creation as she rested. Among them, four Guardians were assigned to keep her vision for this world alive though she may yet slumber.
Thousands of years came to pass. Without her guidance, her children lost their way. When she awoke, she bore witness to the result of a separation somewhere down the line. Daemonkind had emerged as a result of one Guardian’s meddling, an overindulgence in dark magics and hedonism creating an abomination of her once peaceful Fae. Yet further from both Daemons and Fae had come to exist the Humans and Elves respectively, lesser creatures to be sure, yet tied to her Earthen Magic all the same.
Gaea did not have the pleasure of awakening as a mother checking in on her children. Those times were long gone, for now she bore witness to her creations murdering one another. Humans and Daemons had been waging war on Fae and Elvenkind, harvesting the former and their sacred lands for their own magical misdeeds. It was a practical genocide against their more peaceful, less combative ancestors.
Gaea was deeply distraught and saddened by her own failures, and wrought with agony as she came to realize that the world she’d tried so hard to perfect had all but been destroyed amid this war, which she realized with heartbreak was only the most recent of many that had occurred throughout her slumber. She rashly chose to split the light and the darkness in twain. In a cataclysm of godly scale, Pangaea ruptured. She tore Daemonkind from her Earth, banishing them to dwell forevermore in a realm of hellfire borne solely of her righteous anger.
She severed the threads of Humankind, separating magic from their very being so they were no more than flesh and bone, before razing all traces of their former great civilization to mere dust. They would be forced to start anew, no magic nor greater power to ever guide them again. Along with the world as it was known, the memory of all was altered. Humankind would forget their true Mother Nature, knowing only its remnants. Daemonkind and its master would remember, only so they would never forget the error of their ways as they remained in fiery purgatory. Fae and the Elves, however, were given a much more selective amnesia. Though they would know of their Goddess and her greatness, they would not know of the war that had caused them to suffer for so, so long, nor the aftermath in which Gaea’s great fury tore Earth asunder.
Drained of her might, Gaea brought herself into one final isolation. At Earth’s birthplace of creation, she retreated deep within her last standing forest, the trees charred black from the cinders of her destruction. Even her home was stained in a painful reminder of what her despaired anger had wrought. The few remaining Faeries and Elves were allowed at last to live in peace within the bounds of the forest, tasked only with its protection from Humans and Daemons alike should they ever wander. She had already resigned that her power could not hold the latter forever. At all costs, the Blackwoods-- her home-- must be protected.
And so, weeping, she retreated her own great form into the Earth itself… and slept.
“At least, that’s the story I've gathered so far. History’s pretty muddy, honestly. Maybe one day I’ll find out where the Blackwoods are for myself, and then I can get some hard answers. Maybe I’ll even dig up poor old Gaea herself!” - Rowen
