Mainly the color choices really. How close do you reckon they are to what the engines were actually painted?

Well, I'm positive Texas had a Russian iron boiler. From documentation, and models, Texas had a lot of brass fittings, and the rest were dark reds and browns. As for the other engine, I colorized it like I thought a U.S.M.R.R. engine would be colored (after doing a little bit of research).

As for the Engines in the film (and not their "characters") I decided to color them like the engines they were playing and not as they looked when this film was made (frankly, I have found no documentation on how these engines were painted back when they were in operation. All I could find was a roster).

It's still very nice for a colorized photo. Though for the film I wouldn't be surprised if they were painted entirely black.

I wouldn't be surprised either, they were essentially logging engines.

Yes, I remember reading that in a book about the The General and the Texas. It's been a wonderful book and a great resource for my research and modeling efforts.

What book would that be?

I believe its called "The General and the Texas". I can't say for certain if that's the correct title as I have it packed away at the moment. I'll see if I can dig it up and check for sure.

I have to confess I have yet to read it cover to cover, but what I have read it is pretty good and a wealth of info!

Some books I do read cover-to-cover. Such as the one I have on the UV&P and the Nevada Central.

Buster Keaton bought an entire logging railroad, six 4-4-0 locomotives, and a few dozen pieces of rolling stock, all just for this one film! It surely paid off! (Even the loss of one of the engines in the burning bridge sequence. Another engine was lost by accident during production of the film. They were driven quite recklessly in many instances!)Β

Which engine was lost and how?

It is to my knowledge only 3 engines were used for the film, and the railroad was leased by the Oregon Pacific and Eastern.

I don't know. It must've been an extra that was never used in the final cut, in case one of the other engines had an accident beyond repair, since they were being pushed to their limits in many sequences along rickety tracks.Β

The engine lost purposefully for the film was the one that fell into the river.Β

That engine was OP&E #5, she played "Columbia" until she was swapped for Texas in the bridge scene. Here is a video I made about it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VANJBm…
