Sometimes people ask how I draw eyes. Here's a quick look at my approach (download for full size).

I actually made this about a year and a half ago at the request of a friend. Each half was quickly sketched out on its own piece of paper and I've merged them together here.

As for the numbered steps for the left eye (which appears on our right):

1. Basic shape
2. Add the shape of the iris
3. Choose the direction of the source of light (I made an x here) and add a highlight
4. Add the pupil
5. Darken/strengthen the lines
6. Add the shadow to the iris (cast by the upper eyelid), darkest toward the light and lightest on the opposite side
7. Add eyelashes and shadow to the white of the eye
8. Add the eyebrow
