i don't assume to knowing better than anyone, you can take this as a rough guide as you want or ignore it completely. do what you will.
i'm very very passionate about expressions and what little i can do to guide whatever it is that you wanna do i will. i've spent ALOT of time drawing expressions and this is what works for me at least.
this is just what i take into consideration every time i draw something or some one.
i hope someone might get something outta this anyways.
right, i'm off to read me some comics!!

This kicks so much tail, and is uber helpful. I will be using this for refs later on when I get stuck on expressions, since that and having the characters face the audience are some of my main troubles.
Thank you majorly. Sorry this isn't the most helpful comment, but its all I could say without sounding like a total goober.

Oh, cool! Thanks for explaining all this, with several examples that show what you mean very well. It's so interesting! I'm showing this right away to my sister. She's just 14, but she draws all the time, especially comic characters. I think she'll find your precious advice very helpful. I'm going to use the tricks too!

My eyes are currently lacking iris' because they seem to look better without them, so this is a TREMENOUS help!
Tis very difficult to show where your character's lookin' if they don't have an iris...

This is very informative. I wonder, would you consider possibly doing one for eye type? Like which kind of eyes match which kind of personality? I find that choosing eyes for a character is the hardest part of finding the look of a character for me.

excellent stuff! you make some very good points and a lotta people would benefit from taking your advice.
and, as you've already experienced, you may offend some animu artists. xD but, it's true! unless you infuse a LOT of personality into your anime drawings and not just copy the archetypes that have been beaten to death over the years, then the expressions will be as flat as a pancake and uninspired.
*dons flame-retardant suit* keep fighting the good fight, eno my luff!

You know what? You put on ths page all the reasons I stopped to draw anime (even if I still have some reference.) I love drawing expressions, but it wasn't very expressive for me, and finally I changed...
This is the most important thing for me as well, i'm still working on it, but you mastered that and... Can I let g out my inner fangirl for you ? This is why first I loved you, I was totally stunned by how expressives your characted were !

aww, as always you;re too sweet for your own good. Merci bien Cry. i think that it's great to have a little bit of anime influence in a style, hell mine does as well, in a certain infinitesimal way...you gotta really wanna see it ya know.
but yeah, thanks hun, i'm so glad that you continue to like my stuff cause yours certainly rocks my socks!

anime is bad in certain ways. don't worry too much as i'm extremely bias in that sense.

I have an ever so slight urge to point out that I find anime style in no way restricting, but screw it. You have your right to your opinion, and I have my right to mine.
There's plenty of little useful things there, most of which I gathered from various sources (including several rather expensive books). I guess that's the key to a good tutorial, putting all the good tricks on one page.

lol! i know, i'm very bias huh? people are gonna do what they want, i was just saying that that's not the path i took. get a flavour of anime in your style, that's probably what's gonna work the best.
thanks for your two cents hun.

You jus' had to demonstrate the anime-style in your style *shutter* No offense, but it's not you.
Question: regarding the pupils [always] touching the lines on the [white] eyes, when planning to outline it, how do you achieve that expression without your character looking cross-eyed like that crazy accountant dude yelling, 'No, No, NO!'? I try to avoid that, because of the said 'cross-eyed' effect, but even that doesn't seem to win in my favor...
Know what I mean?

yeah, the anime thing is like a skirt that makes my bum look big, i'm just not gonna wear it.
um, i'm not sure i know what you mean with the question tho, if you want you could email me a picture of what you mean and i could resketch it back, if ya want, that might be the easiest option.

Here, I think I found some sufficient examples of the 'staring-off-in-space' problem of mine.
old one
new one
I had the opportunity to re-do this one (since I screwed up) and took on your advice/guideline of directional gaze. I think it worked pretty well, but I like to hear of your opinion between the two. What think? Would this be the proper intention for the expression?

This I really like. I've never been one to make good facial expressions outside of 'realism', but I love how you draw your characters. I may be tempted to give it a try..

you just take the basic lessons and rules you already know apply in realism and warp and exaggerate them. you'll be fine, and have fun.
