Description
Here’s the inked and colored version of the Japanese Self-Defense Force Robot, or The Asuka Fortress Robot as its better known to American Godzilla fans. And was done as a comissions and companion piece to my previous upload:
The late 1970’s, along with the vast majority of the 1980’s, was not a good time for Japanese Kaiju movies. And many such films that were planned during this period, ultimately met their ends before the cameras could roll.
”Nessie”
”Godzilla vs Gargantua”
”King of the Monsters: Rebirth of Godzilla”
”Giant Monster Nesugon Appears”
”Kongorilla”
”Ultraman: Hero from the Stars”
”Ultraman: The Jupiter Effect”
”Mortal”
”Devil Manta”
And these are not even counting the American or European attempts to resurrect the giant monster genre!
”Godzilla vs The Asuka Fortress” (planned for 1979) was one such failed production, which was also meant to revive the then dormant Godzilla franchise.
Details surrounding this project are scarce. But longtime series writer Shinichi Sekizawa penned an outline, dealing with a revolt within the Japanese government, as Godzilla does battle with a giant mecha, constructed by the Self Defense Force.
Considering the relatively down-to-Earth plot, and the more serious nature of 1975’s ”Terror of Mechagodzilla”, me and my client Dan did some serious educated guess work, to create our own interpretation.
No official designs for the JSDF Robot exists. But based on the growing popularity of ‘Realistic Mecha’ back in the late 1970’s, did heavily inspired us to create a military automaton. Less Mechagodzilla, and more like "Mobile Suit Gundam" or "Armored Trooper VOTOMS", basically.
We’re also assuming that the JSDF Robot is a tool hijacked by the revolutioners (The Asuka Fortress itself?), from the Japanese government. So we made the machine neutral in appearances, neither suggesting something villainous, nor heroic. That role lands squarely on whoever pilots the titanic weapon.
And again, please see the aforementioned companion sketch, for more details on the Asuka Fortress Robot's weapons and abilities. Minus the tank tread shoes and 'crotch cannon', which was gleefully abandoned in my finished illustration.

Ok, first off....I love this. It actually made me go out and buy Gundam and Mikadroid, because it reminded me so much of those films. So props to you to making me buy those 2 "classic" Japanese films lol.
As far as the design goes...it really does fit the time period of which it was suppose to be made. I certainly see a lot of 80's aesthetics in there. Especially if you took a few hints from the Space Wolf Juspion series. I'm looking at the Star Wars light saber when I say that....cause the Vadar robot in that series had a light saber.
The head looks pretty awesome and certainly has a more soldier feel to it. Pretty smart to block out the eyes and make it has alien in look, with the visor as possible. And the shield was a nice touch. Though dare I say, it feels a bit small. Does it extend out at all? Idk, maybe it is cause I just watch the first 49 episodes of Yugioh that got put on Netflix. I just keep picturing the Big Shield Gardna lol.
It's a great piece though and really shows how good you are at design monsters, or revamping older unused ideas. This is right up there with the monster astronaut that was going to fight Godzilla.
