Description This is a digital photograph of a Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly (Battus philenor). It is a bit the worse for wear though, and the swallowtail part is missing. A viewer corrected me on the identification of this one. I had originally identified it as a Spicebush Swallowtail, going by the little booklet that the butterfly garden handed out, which in this case, was incorrect.

Oooh gods, I really like that color. The gradient teal. I so want to steal it for a picture. Nice shot!

Thank you very much. And go right ahead and sample the colors if you want to.

Considering how quickly a butterfly and tatter their wings you can hardly be faulted for the damage, but praised for getting the blue to show up. I do have a nick-picky problem though. That isn't a Spicebush, its a Pipevine Swallowtail. The Spicebush is a mimic of the Pipevine but the Spicebush's blue isn't irrodescent and will always be there where here that blue is only showing up due to the light hitting it.

There, I think I have them all fixed now...

I'm sorry to have caused you to go to all the trouble, I just thought I would let you know. I am curious as to what place would give out such information if you don't mind me asking. Also, if you're wondering just what a Spicebush looks like check out this person's shot of one [link] as it shows pretty clearly its markings.

No, I would rather be accurate, then leave things confused. I hate spreading misinformation, even accidentally.

The Butterflies Alive Butterfly Garden that is part of The Living Desert (what sort of passes for a zoo around here), in Palm Desert, CA. To be fair to them, I looked through other pictures that my brother took on an earlier trip there (the year before), and he had one of what clearly really was a Spicebush. So I imagine that they couldn't get the Spicebush this last year, and the Pipevine was substituted, or something like that, and they just neglected to update their hand-out.

Oh, I googled both kinds, after you told me about the problem, so I have looked at several pictures. Interesting that with some species, the sex can make a significant difference. No mention of that in the booklet. *snorts* Just one image for each kind. I never got to see the undersides of the wings on the Pipevine, so I didn't know that it even had the seven round orange spots, or should have.

Thank you.

*blinks* Interesting. I was going by the booklet (with pictures) that they handed out at the butterfly garden to identify it. There was only one in the booklet with anything like this coloration, and I just used the name and scientific identification that the booklet claimed was correct for this one. The next time I go there, I will have to tell them that they may have their information wrong. Perhaps they accidentally ordered the wrong kind of chrysalis. Meh, I don't know if I have the energy to go through and rename all of this kind right now though. It may take me a while. Thank you for the information.

God, I love the opalescent teal...

Isn't that lovely? I am rather fond of it as well. Can you imagine a dragon with opalescent scales like that?

Raydl's wings are supposed to be like this, although not quite so blatantly colourful. I imagine them like an opal, or pearl, with no one colour dominating... but black instead of white.

Hmm... No, not that I can recall *looks up*

Wow, that's really neat! Yeah, that's sort of what I mean... Mmm...

Reminds me, I just bought myself a nice hematite bracelet for cheap. I'm happy :3

Heh, blame it on mother being into gemology. I absorbed rock information through osmosis.

Hematite is one of my favorites, nice and silvery, and grounding. They used to call it blood stone, because it is an iron oxide crystal structure, and when you cut it, and break the crystal structure, the grains of rock that come away in the water (you generally cut tough stones like that with water to cool the blade) look like rust, making the water look a bit like blood.

That's cool. I like rocks :b :3 You know that already, though, I think.

Ahh, yeah. You were the one who first told me about hematite, actually. Suggested it to me as a grounding stone, but warned me that it can work "too well" - ie. it may feel TOO heavy.

It is a heavy stone, definitely, just physically speaking, and it is magnetic, which in a way adds to the weight of it. I like the feel of it, and I really like the look of it. It's almost too heavy for me I think sometimes, but that's why I got a bracelet with smaller pieces, rather than something with the really large chunks in it. I'm happy with it :3

I also bought a rough hunk of amethyst. I have a quartz crystal just like it. I wear them as pendants :3

I thought I had, but I wasn't completely sure. *wry laugh*

Not all hematite is magnetic you know. It depends on whether it formed near a strong magnetic field. Some is, and that is often called magnetite, I believe. I have a bracelet of that as well, and I rather like its properties. A metal, a crystal, and a rock, all in one. The magnetic properties definitely give it a strong feeling of channeling energy.

I am rather fond of amethyst as well. Lovely color.

*shrugs* Not specifically, but I know a decent amount about it (family members do it). But there are lots of decent books, and likely web sites as well, on it. Why, what did you need to know?

Kimantha333 In reply to Eolhin [2007-09-14 05:21:59 +0000 UTC]

I have books and stuff, I just like knowing that if I get in a quandry that someone that knows what they're doing can talk me out of it So far my first quilt met with rave reviews by it's proud new owner... course it's new owner is my cat Taz But he would not use it if he didn't like it right?

*L* If he saw you working on it, he is likely sitting on it just because it was something you were working on. I bet you he sat on it before you were finished, yes? I know a decent amount about sewing in general, but I have never made a quilt, so I could try to help you if you get stuck, but I have no idea if it will be something that I really can help with, or not. *wry smile*

Well, it prolly smelled like me I'm guessing. And he saw me making it, and all three kitties sat next to me and watched I figured the sewing machine would scare them but they all hunkered down like little troopers and played with the thread and stuff Thanks I'll have to put a piccy of it up here

Oh yes, the littlest one we just brought home which we named Abracadabra is the worst Little Abby always wants to get in her gramp's coffee Yesterday she was playing with Taz and she doesn't like the microwaves humming sound so she scooted behind the stove and Taz followed, waiting patiently for her to reappear. She did but on the other side of the stove and when she came around to find him she sniffed his leg and he jumped like three foot into the air
