Or, it'd be more accurate to say that humanity has escaped definition. From postturing AI to uplifted animals, in almost every occurence of an intelligence reaching human level it assimilates in to the human identity. Each posthuman group has brought new values and ideas into the human sphere, creating a rich mosaic of culture across the globe. It's not uncommon for large cities to be home to niche communities of all kinds of posthuman entities. From uplifted Octopuses to digitalized beings with more processing power than everyone else in their city combined. Most poshumans don't consider themselves as such however, choosing to keep their inteligence at a recognizable level and continue living in their community. Even those that do identify with the posthuman movement often stay recognizable enough to have basehuman friends and family. Most changes are visual ones. Genetic engineering has allowed people to change everything about themselves. Changing hair color, adding patterns and images across the body, and growing feathers are all fairly common to see. Often younger folk will form tight knit bonds with a usualy small group of fellow transhumans to experiment with mental and physcial alterations. Their are many paths to go down for people and some never settle, forevor experimenting and changing substrates their whole life.

In outer space it's a different story. Being isolated from society means physichal apearance isn't a factor. Neither is having emotions and a personality recognizable as human. For all the diversity on Earth, social cohesion has kept everyone fairly simaler to eachother. Especialy for miners and other euntrepreneurs, effiency above all else is the name of the game. So if placing your mind in a computer and trimming the emotional fat means less energy, most will do it. Spacers will often split their mind into mulptiple bodies, ships, drones, nanobot clouds, and computers to have a full conection to their environment. In the most succseful examples a spacers mind can take in thousands of times more stimulation than a basehuman. This allows them to stand their ground against total Earther hegemony, despite the massive resource/population difference. These "astro-transhumans" are far more common to identify with the posthuman community and live isolated from any society outside of fellow posthumans. Distinct AI identity is common in space and are the most isoalted groups in space. This mytery has spawned panic as well as intrigue and some interest in bridging AI and human society.

This means large urban concetrations are limited to old, unchanged cities and the rare centers of resource or buisness. Some cities, such as Samarkand and Brussels, have gone the other way and become exclusively buisness centered. Hosting internationally acclaimed computer servers for massive forums/VR worlds or incredibley intelligent hyperturings. This dichotomy between buisness oreintated digitalized international centers and social community centered cities has laregly replaces the urban/rural divide. Rural populations still exist but are ussualy isolated and fully independant, such as the many Northern Canadian arcologies.

Open revolt broke out in Alberta and Saskatchewan by remnants of the Humanity First party in 2121. The party was a coalition of nationalists and conservatives in support of decentralization and anti-transhumanism. Ottawa has suspended the rights of the Western provinces and has made significant efforts to decrease separatism in Quebec. Posthumanism and digitalization is supported by Ottowa as a means of culturally blending the provinces and uniting the country. For the past 5 years the country has been following the Prairie Sunrise Project, building massive servers in the capitals of each province to attract digital investment. Winnipeg is the most developed along the project. Android facilities in the city allow the new digital population to have physical avatars. Texas and its Neorepublican Party cooperates with DC diplomatically and economically but has stayed distinctly independent for decades. The Oil crash greatly hurt Texas for decades. The middle class shrank, investment plummeted, and the wealthy moved elsewhere. Civil strife and ethnic conflict was common, Texas was almost divided into 3 states in 2066! In the 2080’s the “Southwest-Gulf Rejuvenation Program” saw the importation of superconductors to the region, making solar a much more lucrative industry. Private investment funded new solar farms and started a snowball effect of wealth. This new wealth mostly went to the upper class however and today, the region remains impoverished, if less violent. Southern industry has grown at a steady rate for decades. Socially egalitarian since the 70’s, the South is home to many peoples and cultures. Magnolia, as it's called, is one of the only regions in the US to be post-scarcity. Most American immigrants move to Magnolia, bringing great investment with them. The Magnolian Demarchy is a member of the United America. They work with DC to hopefully one day raise the standard of living that Magnolia enjoys. Other members of United America include the Shining Democracy Party and the National American Liberty Party. The former is based in the Great Lakes and Northeast. It’s descended from the Libertarian Party, which underwent significant reforms towards libertarian-socialism in the 50’s. Since ~2102 the Party has been influenced by a clique of hyperturing “cyberyuppies”. To what extent the clique influences the party is a matter of debate. Great buildings dominate the NE-GL landscape. NYC specifically is unrecognizable from the 21st century. Dams have drained the rivers and replaced them with fertile geoengineered farms, space elevators, continued urban development, and towering megastructures. Completely opposite from NYC, the National American Liberty Party is based in St.Louis. Its primary voter base and its best interest is staked in the Appalachians, or more specifically, the growing Appalachian Apoist movement. The region was isolated and in open revolt up to 2096, being the last revolt of the Climate Crisis to submit to DC. Open revolt again broke out, this time a rebellion falling Apoism, when the state of Kentucky attempted to build a space tether in the mountains.

When the African Holarchy was founded it was a weak government built on consesus of ethnic based canton-equivelants. The federal government didnt have much power and was motivated by ideology to let the cantons run themselves. Even the cantons didn't have much power however as the revolutionaries stripped them of any administritive/executivecapablities. At the time it worked out alright as an anarchist free state. Decades later the new hyperturing class reconstructed the global economy from scratch. Being leagues ahead of any charismatic or intelligent figureheads in the Holarchy they were easily able to build their own proccesing nodes, transport, autoindustry, and buisness centers across the free state. While the Holarchy was never inflitrated by outsiders, overthrown, or what not, a network of industry has developed across the land, like a country living "on top" of another.

In the 2050's Southern Africa was in complete chaos. Only one of many revolutionary groups to throw off the yoke of neocolonialism curropt governments, the Chibuene primiativists organized under a traditional military clique not too disimaler to the old Stalinist dictatorships of the Cold War. In the mid 70's a popular uprising overthrew the military and established a council of dentralized armies to defend each region of the Free State. Restrictions on development were abolished, as was any government or pseudo-government institutions. When the UN Zimbabwe administration started becoming active after decades of quiet isolation it pressured the armies of Chibuene to grow stronger and more efficient. The council agreed to hire the efforts of an Indonesian superturing. While he was only meant to fight, train, and advise the military for 4 years, he generously stayed for the duration of the war, inspired by the anarchist cause. Future importations of transhuman tech and training has made the Chibuene army able to punch far above their weight and gain international interest.

Hindu supemracists ran the First Indian Republic rampant for decades. During the climate crisis India was a military police state and barely survived into the 60's . Ethnic/religious violence was rampant and many, many attempted revolutions were fought in those decades. Finaly in 2064 India collapsed in a bloody and drawn out war with Pakistan they started. In 2070 the 2nd Republic was founded and started rebuilding the Indian Ocean economic and political communities.

Life's a lot smaller in the cantons. Lacking federal governments means no sprawling megacities, megastructures, or other wacky futuristic projects. Which isn't to say they're stuck in the past, far from it. Rural/urbanism doesnt exist and has been completely replaced with postindustrial designs. Newer, smaller, personal automation has finaly made post-scarcity possible. Natural resources are preserved and only used in the most effiecient way possible when needed. If large projects must be facilitated it is done through spontaneously formed unions of cantons with limited abilities. Human modification has thrived. Rojava was the first place on Earth to atract a vibrant transhuman culture. People don't look to any government for aproval or fear its retributions. Instead they work with their community to do what theyd like, and retaliation only happens if their community wishes it throuh consensus. The highest level of government most people ever interact with is the demarchic city council. This can be applied to the United Cantons as well for the most part. They're some differences though. Eastern Apoisim (or Central Apoism) has a federal government which exists "on top" of the cantons (see the Holarchy, but with less influence in the cantons).
