Description
My second completed animation attempt. (the first one )Gah, it's been a while. I spent, I think, a total of 4 hours on this one with no light table. I usually throw together a makeshift one if I try animation, but I just traced the whole thing as best and as fast as I could this time with thin, typing paper from who knows when. (I drew 24 frames and added a few with PS for the fade out)
The flow turned out better for the expression and tear than I had expected. And considering I've never gone to animation school, or got past the basics in highschool, I think I'm improving. I'm doing tons of self study on youtube right now. You can find so many demo reels there!
;D Hope you guys like!

Thank you! That's very kind of you to take the time to critique it for me.
I'm happy that I pushed through till the end on this project all in one night before I lost motivation, but it bothers me that that pushing myself to finishing put the end at a place a bit less than desirable (quality wise).
There are hoards of things I would do differently now, with all the feedback I've had from everyone. And perhaps I will ;> Thanks for the honest opinion!

It's not at all a problem, I'm actually quite impressed with your work. I was considering getting you to either do a commission or get a print of one of your greater pieces. You know... once I have the money and all. But yeah, can't wait to see some of your newer work. Also if you are up for the commission (Not now I assume due to your illustration project.) I would love for you to do a piece of work for me, for a set price of course, but I think it would be worth it, even for a print of it as well.

It would be a tie between "Epicenter of a heart", "The garden door", and "My house" xP they're so many amazing ones but those three reeeeeaaally touched me x3 but like I said, once I have money, I haven't been able to work lately so I haven't aquired any *w* but yeah. I plan on getting a couple prints. Your art is quite literally what keeps me going in the traditional art, I just love sketching and your style is just MAGNIFIQUE~! *French/italian kissing motion.... thing...*

Awe! Really? That's so nice! I have a special fondness for those few, myself. ^^ I'm very honored you would say that! Many thank yous! I'm very glad that my work has a benefit beyond just mere images. What a delight!
I really hope you get work soon, not (obviously) for my interests, but for your own security. :> My best wishes on that.

I have had this on my message center for the longest time! I'm amazed by it and want to comment on it as deep as the impact it had on me.
This is really well-done and the feeling is expressed perfectly. I know its a test, but I think the clothing moves too much or maybe it's just my eye.
I like the movement of the hair and the fast motion you did when she lifts her head.
My favorite two parts, are how angry she looks at first when her head was down, how you expressed it with clenching her teeth, and ofcourse the tear falling is very professional.
I am so FAR away from being a PRO but I know this is a very good animation.

Ah, well, I hope something I did can help then! ^^ Good to note, of course, that I did this traditionally, so I'll explain that traditional method I used. I can't help none when it comes to animation via computer programs. XD aha
First off I started with paper, if you have a proper light table and tools then paper isn't a big deal. But for us average Joe's every little bit can help. For this one I decided to make it easy and used typing paper, which is thin and easier to trace in animation if a proper light table is lacking. Another paper that is thin will work too. But if you can't find any, ordinary office paper will do the job well enough too. Just work with what you've got.
Next make for yourself a light table. Even with typing paper, it can be hard to trace seamlessly if you don't have a light coming from underneath. What I've done several times is take my family's small glass coffee table and used a lamp that's stem can twist so I can position the light source to shine up from under the table. Perhaps you have something else at your disposal that might work too? Before I've also propped up a sheet of plastic with books for legs when I didn't have a coffee table available to me.
So once you get a lightsource underneath your transparent, solid drawing surface, find something that will keep your papers stationary. Or at the very least something that will prevent the papers from shifting, something that can ruin all our hard work of careful tracing. Paperclips work. Sometimes tapping the edges down to the table helps. Whatever works and doesn't ruin your paper.
Do you have a scanner and some kind of photoshop program available to you?

EpicMyst In reply to SoubisAngel [2011-12-22 20:38:51 +0000 UTC]
That might be handy to you. What I had to do after I finished the animation drawings was scan them in individually to a computer that had photoshop (it's important to make sure that you line up the pages perfectly with some straight edge of the scanner so that the images aren't all over when they are on the computer, even a bit of a shift can translate into a lot of a shift when animated). Open all of them on photoshop, then paste them on to just one of the photoshop windows, each frame being a different layer (first frame at the bottom, last at the top). Then when I went to save I saved it as a .gif file and selected the box that said covert layers to frames. Opens up a new window, I select "animate", check the delay between frames and save. Then go view it, see if it turned out right or if I have to adjust the frame rate.
XD And then you're done!

I'm glad I could be! Oh gosh. YESSSS. So many times I tried to endure window tracing. Upper arm strength increase? Yeah. But worth the effort and strain? NoooooOOooo. =__=
It would also be good to check that the photoshop program on your school computer has that option before going the whole way. Mine is an older PS, so it may have some differences. I recommend making a several layered file on the PS and saving to find out if it has the option or if you can find it as something renamed/organized differently.

My day job is being career coordinator at an animation and new media university in Guadalajara, Jalisco. I can safely say with the two animation tests you've got that this is going quite well.
Say, have you read the Animator's survival kit yet?

;/////v/////; r-really...? aaauugh, that's so cool! I wish I had been able to take the animating course in highschool straight through till graduation, but I managed to only get taste of how to do a morphing animation in grade 9 general art before the school cut it. What a bummer that was.
Oh gosh! I wish! I've seen just a couple of other books, but all for very specific cartoon styles in animation.

Well, if you want to foray into animation, The animator's survival kit is probably the best you can get. It's a very comprehensive course, if you're really interested in pursuing the skill, I would highly recommend for you to acquire a copy. It's pretty much all you need.
there's also the Animated Animator's survival kit, but it's a behemoth of 16 dvds with a cost to match. Very unaffordable. It is good though, with examples of what to do, and what not to.
There's also the Crash course from Eric Goldberg, and Timing for animation by Focal press (a more recent, but very decent book). The books written by Osamu Tezuka are great sources to understand a method of doing limited animation. And there are also several DVDs by the ghibli animators (find them at www.bakabt.com if you don't mind fansubs)
The only book you really don't want to get even if it looks pretty is the "Illusion of life". It's real good, pretty for animation history, but it teaches next to nothing, as nice as it is.

EpicMyst In reply to SapientaAetate [2011-03-30 17:08:43 +0000 UTC]
Oh thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
I'm glad you asked! In anime, tears classically fall from the far side of the eye/the side you're referring to (I've noticed it always happens that way regardless of circumstance! haha XD), but the tear ducts for our eyes are on the very inside corner of the lower lid and so tears typically fall from the inside corner, unless gravity is pulling it in the opposite direction when the head is horizontal. But I planned for the tear to be interrupted by blinking before it could be pulled to the corner of the eye, as I've noticed with myself at times. ^^ wowee, that was long-winded. haha. My bad. I hope that makes sense?

But you're right! When someone puts their head back, normally that would case the tear to fall to the outside corner of the eye. ;D I just wasn't sure if you meant with anime as reference or just gravity. haha.
Are you, really? Awwwwe. Thank you! I'm glad you like what I draw. ^^
