Description
My second completed animation attempt. (the first one )Gah, it's been a while. I spent, I think, a total of 4 hours on this one with no light table. I usually throw together a makeshift one if I try animation, but I just traced the whole thing as best and as fast as I could this time with thin, typing paper from who knows when. (I drew 24 frames and added a few with PS for the fade out)
The flow turned out better for the expression and tear than I had expected. And considering I've never gone to animation school, or got past the basics in highschool, I think I'm improving. I'm doing tons of self study on youtube right now. You can find so many demo reels there!
;D Hope you guys like!

Sometimes it's nice to just have a continuing project that you work on periodically, neh?

it'll come ^^

Really, really love it. I'm so intimidated to even trying animating something like this. Consistently making a character look the same is something I still struggle with. But this is so beautiful~ I to like the life the moving lines seem to have.

I have to tell ya, it was intimidating. But then that intimidation just dissolved into having fun. ^^ The best way I learn, is by diving head first into something that's new and hard and learning from what I did wrong. eheh
Consistency in animation is pretty easy, as long as you're not throwing the character around everywhere. X3 The trick is to trace. When she threw her head back, I drew in her neck where it should be (anything stationary) then I used one of the previous frames and twisted it, then traced the head so it would stay consistent ;>

Yup, guess that's the way to go. I'm diving head first into art college on Monday after all! ;]
And sounds good! Over all it came out very fluid for drawing/tracing each frame again. :3

As per normal, I'm amazed. You drew each frame yourself, you say? That's stick-to-itiveness in my opinion. So first off, bravo on completing a project like this!
I've always been fond of hand-drawn animation. There's something about The Black Cauldron and co. that seems so realistic. The more I look at this one, the more I'm able to pick out the details that make it so pretty. The way her hair moves--bangs and ends to her pigtails--is extremely smooth and natural, which is why I love it so much. Then the way the trail begins to fade as the tear rolls down her cheek adds that slight realism that is, again, quite attractive.
But I think my favorite thing about this animation is in the very beginning: her expression. How she starts out fairly neutral and the way it gradually changes from there, adding the small touches like her slight frown and the lips drawing back. It seems like there's pain in that brief moment, and I think you did a great job illustrating that. Your style worked really well for this, and I'm looking forward to more!

Ahahah - I love how you word things, Lic!
For pete's..! That's crazy! You manage to pick out every part I wanted noticed. That makes me so indescribably happy! -^^-
The expression was my major baby in this one. I think it would have been even more effective had I drawn it out a bit more, but I wasn't sure how the timing would work in relation to my frames - it's been a long time. X'D GAAAAAAAAAH. THANK YOU SO MUCH, YOU'VE MADE MY DAY

I'm so glad I was able to pick up what you put out on display~ Furthermore, that you enjoyed my comment! That really made my day, right there. It's always nice to know /why/ someone likes your work, instead of just "it looks good". I try to give others that satisfaction as much as possible. (Within reason, of course~ =3)
However, I personally wanted to know what happened after that single, beautiful tear. I would have loved to see more frames. ^^
Really though, (veering off traaack) if people want to learn from others on this site, it can be so simple. All someone has to do is take time to find what and who's style they like, then keep an eye out for what they can learn.
I do enjoy your style very much; it has a gentle quality to it, yet you put in so many small details that add to everything and enhance what you're trying to get across. I really hope I can learn more from your art, so please keep sharing it!

This is awesome, I love the animation style; it's the rawness of it and the life in the lines that I like most.
I think I'm just a strange person that likes seeing WIP pieces better than the finished pieces. I think, sure you can end on something beautiful, but the actual creation of something beautiful is more amzing to me :3
So yeah, I really like this

I've always loved that as well. There's something rather enchanting about the lines always being in a state of inconsistency - if that makes any sense. XD
wow. That's exactly how I would describe it too! eheh
Thanks a ton!

neko-xexe In reply to EpicMyst [2009-08-20 13:05:36 +0000 UTC]
It made sense to me. It's like each line is telling it's own part of the big picture instead of the whole doing it by it's self.
I'm the kinda curious person that looks at something and thinks "How did they do that?" and these WIP pieces satisfy that curiousity and I learn something which is always a good feeling for me :3
You're welcome, keep up with it as I'd love to see more ^-^

aww im sorry i couldn't criticize your work because i nid to upgrade to premium..btw i love it.. but there is something weird, the pacing of the girl while lifting her head up is quite fast..i wish i could draw like that too..do you have any books or anytrhing that could help me enhance my drawing abilities? hahahah..i really want to draw too..and i really want to make costumes!! sorry for telling something like this..can you draw some costumes.. girl costumes, as much as possible not short skirts or anything that shows of a lot of skin in the leg part..sorry for being like this..just ignore me..i know im annoying enough already..

No, unfortunately I don't. But I keep up a folder in my favorites specifically for a collection of tutorials and things that help with anatomy etc. Perhaps you should check that out? I've found many of them to be as helpful as my highschool art course!

There are TONS of things you can find on the internet about animation if you look. There are also some great books out there like "The Animator's Survival Kit". And of course, any good art institute has an animation course.
I got the very basic fundamentals from my, I think, grade 10 year - which devoted a very brief part of our curriculum to a project where we had to morph something into something else. Sadly, before I reached grade 12, they booted the grade 12 animation course at the school. :<

blargleargle.
there's a reason i never animated on paper...
it's a beautiful piece of work, great movement, great images, your drawing talent is always amazing...but you had to redraw the whole figure every frame, didn't you, you poor thing!
here's a handy tip.
if your character reaches a 'stop', then you should just animate frames with the parts that are supposed to move. example: when she moves her head up, draw the head for one frame, then make drawings that are JUST the eye moving, with no head. most animation programs, even something like adobe imageready, will let you overlay the new component frames. this will stop little movements like the hair jiggling around, and the reappearing ear, and it'll more than halve your workload!
even places like disney do this. because they work on clear sheet 'cels' they can just put the new sheets on top of the reused frames before they photograph the scene.

WAHAHAHAH. Oh maiz. I was eagerly anticipating when you'd comment, Dojang! *rubs hands together* You've given me a whopper of goodness here! 8D
You know.. I actually thought of doing that. I think it paid off in the end for me. I remembered finding that when I watched a traditional animation I found it interrupted the flow for me. I really like the enchanting way the lines continue to move while you watch. Even though it takes a bit more work, I really love the result that comes from it!
However, you're totally right; if as I get more experienced with making my lines consistent, I think I'll be able to pull it off in a relatively pleasant way!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Dojang In reply to EpicMyst [2009-08-18 04:47:49 +0000 UTC]
dunno...i think if you animate your movement clean, and you're not working in something with an inherent jiggly movement, like chalk, or paint, you can get a nice clean stop, even in trad animation. and the movement you want to keep, you can keep animating...but you're right, of course, animating every frame does give you a lovely 'life' to your lines. many animators use a two or three frame loop for their pauses...the character will come to a rest, but the rest is three drawings looping, which lets you keep the 'life' with a minimum of work. doing this also prevents "creep"...which is when body parts start shifting around when they shouldn't...usually caused by animating every frame with too few keys...
make sure you try out that three frame loop thing, i think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the results.
