Description
'EVERY FAIRY TALE NEEDS A GOOD OLD-FASHIONED VILLAIN'I know this is a long description but, if you would, please read or I will silently judge you if you say something that shows you haven't read
Inspiration: =agnes-cecile
watercolour, white gel pen, way too much time
I am hopelessly obsessed with BBC Sherlock at the moment (SEASON 3 HAS BEGUN!
About the piece
Before I started, there was almost no doubt that this would be a portrait of Sherlock and only Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch is just brilliant) so Moriarty was truly an unexpected turn. Never would've thought I'd make a tribute to Moriarty, but when the idea dawned, why not? So THAT is how, once upon a time, Moriarty made his way onto the page... midnight blue, black, and crimson blooming, almost like bruises, across his face. Crimson because he has made countless individuals bleed without the slightest hint of remorse. Midnight blue and black allude to the blackness of his soul? So cliche OTL Ah, and the hint of a spider web left of his face in reference to Sherlock calling him a spider.
But the piece seemed a bit empty with just Moriarty being all sinister, "calm before the storm" mastermind... so Sherlock and John in lighter colors and yellows in salute to their 'good guy' statuses!

Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment!
Wow, even if I was fully aware of what the colors and expressions meant, it struck me to see it all spelled out just as I had planned it. So thank you for that!
Your description of the colors and expressions matches my intention perfectly. Truthfully, your comment made my day because I honestly couldn't have explained the piece better. You proved that people are able to understand the concepts that were swirling around in my head as I was making this.

asdlkfnasdf-- I really think you've made a wonderful piece--
The balance between the sizing of Moriarty in comparison to the two at the bottom is well thought out and gives it a sense of completion
Reading the description, it really does seem like a well thought-out piece I love how the colors range from a bruised, battered blue, black, crimson, dark colors to the lighter yellows, and pinks. I think that whether people realize it or not, it imprints a kind of psychological knowledge that makes the piece so very fitting. I love how you added a little spiderweb there to signify Moriarty's true nature; a small sneaky little thing that has connections everywhere. Deadly.
I really like how the paint just dripped down like it does over John and Sherlock's faces as well~ It just adds to the desperation hanging in the atmosphere QuQ The white gel pen also does give it a rather hard contour on the soft colors, adding an elegant, subtle strength to it
you chose the faces and references very well--

Aw thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! I'm really glad you like the colors and concepts of it.
Oh wow, I didn't even make a connection between desperation and the drips. Love that interpretation though! Thanks for sharing
And I wasn't so sure about the gel pen before, but I quite like your comment about it 'adding an elegant, subtle strength'.
There's seriously no need to apologize for leaving a long comment. I love long comments. The fact that you took the time to write something this detailed is much appreciated.

It's not a problem! Thank you for making beautiful sherlock art!~ I really appreciate that someone still takes the time to think things through and end up with beautiful pieces instead of rushed, half-assed ones.
Ahhh, some of the best outcomes are those unintentional But it's still really cool~ akldfsd it'snotaproblem
Well, It's good that you used it~ I think it looks great the way it is
aahh it's not a problem Q//U//Q

Oh jeez, I just don't even know what to say anymore but thank you, thank you, thank you! Haha I tend to be the kind of person that thinks things through to a fault. IDK, it's just much more satisfying (and more enjoyable) to make something meaningful because once you're done, you can at least be glad that it not JUST something nice-looking, it's more than that.
True true, sometimes the best things come from what were thought to be mistakes. I just got real lucky.
Again, thanks about the gel pen. I had a sort of mini panick attack when I had nearly finished; my thought had been: 'Oh my goodness what if I just ruined a perfectly decent painting? D8'
'It deserves the long comments.'--dang, if that isn't the highest praise anyone could give me, I don't know what is.

Yes, those white lines were drawn afterwards with gel pen. I got it from Michaels for about a dollar or two? Not so sure about the price but Michaels is definitely the place.

Oh I KNEW it was from Michaels!!! My Grandma takes me there whenever I need art supplies!
I just feel horrid about her buying me those things because of the prices! They're quite astounding! I understand them being so expensive what with it being art supplies but still!
Thanks for the answer though!

equine-whisperer In reply to GagaPotterTribute [2013-04-06 20:54:07 +0000 UTC]
Haha how'd you know? I could've gotten it from some proper art store... though I guess the price must've given it away. X]
Oh yeah, even though I've been buying art supplies for a while now, I still feel guilty when I check prices and flinch. But the fact of the matter is: making art isn't cheap. Coupons. 40% off coupons are good. You can get them online.
No problem! I always try to reply.

Lucky guess. I deduced that it was Michaels! ;D Maybe I should check out those coupons for the next time I go there! It would make me feel a bit better about my Grandma paying for things I've been trying to sell my art, but I don't want to sell the originals...hence, I have noooooo cash! O.o

equine-whisperer In reply to GagaPotterTribute [2013-04-07 14:15:53 +0000 UTC]
Ohhh I see what you did there X] Yeah, you should! Anything is better than nothing, yeah? And you can use multiple coupons if you ring it up separately. Trust me, my parents and I, we know the strategies.
What about prints then? A good color printout of a good scan or picture wouldn't cost too much, and if you know that they're in demand you can easily earn it all back and then some.

I'm so broke right now that I need to wait a little while longer until I can get a lot of copies. But I've gotten a job offer for my art at this hair salon! I'm supposed to design paintings for them to put up in the salon!

I do like your style! : ) To be honest I have soft spot for watercolors x) And when another artist is good with that technique, I do appreciate it~
In this work I really like Moriarty's face and it's dark colors, fits perfectly ^^ And the white highlights are just great, love them~~

Thank you, though I do owe it to agnes-cecile for inspiring me to do it in this style.
And I feel the same way about watercolor. I don't have all that much experience with it--I haven't used watercolor that much actually--so I can also appreciate it when people take the time to use the medium with such dedication and proficiency.
Haha yes, the whole time I was painting Moriarty's face, 'DARK, DARK, DARK' was like a mantra in my head XD I kept adding more layers of paint because I felt it wasn't dark enough. Also, I'm glad you like the highlights Thanks

It's fine, I don't mind redundancy. I could always use more assurance that I made the right choices. Glad you think I did! Thank you very much! I believe I do understand... though you can elaborate if you want?
