Description
'EVERY FAIRY TALE NEEDS A GOOD OLD-FASHIONED VILLAIN'I know this is a long description but, if you would, please read or I will silently judge you if you say something that shows you haven't read
Inspiration: =agnes-cecile
watercolour, white gel pen, way too much time
I am hopelessly obsessed with BBC Sherlock at the moment (SEASON 3 HAS BEGUN!
About the piece
Before I started, there was almost no doubt that this would be a portrait of Sherlock and only Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch is just brilliant) so Moriarty was truly an unexpected turn. Never would've thought I'd make a tribute to Moriarty, but when the idea dawned, why not? So THAT is how, once upon a time, Moriarty made his way onto the page... midnight blue, black, and crimson blooming, almost like bruises, across his face. Crimson because he has made countless individuals bleed without the slightest hint of remorse. Midnight blue and black allude to the blackness of his soul? So cliche OTL Ah, and the hint of a spider web left of his face in reference to Sherlock calling him a spider.
But the piece seemed a bit empty with just Moriarty being all sinister, "calm before the storm" mastermind... so Sherlock and John in lighter colors and yellows in salute to their 'good guy' statuses!

Comments and interpretations much appreciated! Love to hear your thoughts! And suggestions for future Sherlock endeavours also welcome

Thank you so much! And oh my goodness, I am crying--I didn't think people actually read my huge description. I mean, I guess I shouldn't mind too much, but I put in effort, so thank you!
Glad you think the white highlights help. Hmmm I don't know about 'seamlessly blend' though... maybe it's because I have the original, but the lines seem harsher now that I've scanned it.

Many thanks! I actually was worried about the colors when I started, so I'm glad you think they work well together--orderly chaos. XD And the drips and shadows took more effort than they should have so good to know you think it paid off

I found it! I love the style that is used. The colour choices are fantastic, really. I just...like it, I guess. It struck me as I was going through my messages, and immediately I thought, "Oh my gosh this is amazing!" That's the story on how I came across and put this in my favourites.

I won't deny it because I've argued the same about watercolour unforgiving nature, but I seriously don't think it's a lost cause for you. Based on your work, I can tell you have the patience and attention to detail. Just as pencil drawings are made with layering, watercolour paintings are as well. You've clearly already got the rendering skills so it's simply about getting used to a different medium in order to transfer that skill.

i know it's been said before, but this is absolutely breathtaking! <3 i love the compsition - Moriarty ahead of both Sherlock and John, the victims of his game. also, i adore the colours and their realistic look - Moriarty looking all sinister in crimson, while the yellow emphasizes Sherlock's and John's role as his victims (at least that's my interpretation, since it strongly reminded me of the marks/code in The Blind Banker xD) awesome work!

Bless your soul, I am crying. D'8 Thank you for your lofty praise!
It's amazing the things that come about spontaneously. This piece was originally only going to feature Moriarty, but I figured that I might as well take advantage of the empty space beneath him. Glad you like the end result!
And I love your Blind Banker interpretation! That connection obviously hadn't even occurred to me, but that's brilliant! I appreciate your insight, for one can never make too many Sherlock reference.

Water colour is something I've never been able to master, so I'd like to say you rock for making it look awesome. I adore the colours and what they represent in each person, and how realistic you made each of them looks. Benedict especially can be difficult to draw, what with those cheekbones, but you did very well. Another thing I like, that may or may not have been intentional is Sherlock's eyes. As we all know they are a brilliant blue, but in this you made them seem darker and his pupils look dilated which I think works really well for what he was going through at the time. Sorry this was so long, great work

'you rock for making it look awesome'
Are you real or are you just a fantasy? D'8 I am crying. So much thanks!
Glad you like the symbolism and nice to know that all the time I put into capturing their likeness (spent an obscene amount of time comparing my sketch to the computer screen and making adjustments) was not for naught. I have to agree, Benedict can certainly be difficult.
Ah, Sherlock's eyes were actually not intentional, but I like your interpretation! I really only made them dark because they were in shadow in the reference picture.
No no it's fine! I love long responses! I always write too much

You have beautiful water colour technique! I tried painting in a similar style to this recently, but it didn't go so well for me I would love to learn though! I really like the concept as well, you did a really good job of using the medium to visualize it. My favourite thing about this is definitely the fine white lines! They add delicate but sharp definition. Did you create these using a masking technique? Or was it some sort of gel pen or something? Anyway it looks great and I love all the thought you put into it! Well done!

Thank you very much! D'8 You are too kind. I'm sorry things didn't work out... do you maybe know why it didn't work out? You don't necessarily have to give up on this just yet. *Bit of advice... don't get rough watercolour paper, or paper with a lot of tooth. Made that mistake with this. I'm pretty sure smoother paper would've made the dripping so much easier. I was sitting there adding water and using a straw to make colors drip. >_<
Glad you like the white lines! Though all the credit for the idea goes to the brilliant agnes-cecile. The lines are drawn with white gel pen.

It was like the most I ever cried in a long time. It. was. sad. but this is a great picture for not having watched the episode.
