Magical Mystery Cure, more fuel for the fire... The effects of Starswirl's unfinished spell totally seem like something Discord would do, no? And when Twilight completed it, she gained the power to become an alicorn.
Maybe Starswirl was looking for a way to become an alicorn, too. When his spell didn't work he continued his research, but since he didn't understand the magic of friendship he kept failing. Eventually, even the greatest magical talent in Equestria made a fatal mistake: his spell accidentally channeled the magic of Chaos instead of Harmony. As the influx of unstable energy overwhelmed him, Starswirl lost his mind, but achieved his goal and became a god... of a completely different kind, that is.

It's really interesting idea, but there is one problem with it. Discord never metions anything about that. Only way would be that the experiment and the shock from that change created amnesia. But it would be interesting episode in which Discord figures out that he was Starswirl. I wonder how would Twilight react, because she loves Starswirl.

Well, they're both gray, have white hair (eyebrows), yellow eyes, are very old and extremely powerful.

But no one knows what Starswirl looks like. That picture of him was by a fan and not from the show. So those comparisons are pretty much useless. None the less, I do like to believe that Starswirl became Discord. It's part of my headcanon, and it is not going away.
