Description Set, Seth, Sethek, Egyptian God of Storms, Deserts and Chaos.
His breath created the Desert, and he was the protector God of the lower Egypt.
He was the brother of Osiris. His myth in later times was entwineed with Horus and Osirirs myth, depicting the battles beetween the Gods and the upper and lower egypt, before reunification under the rule of the pharaos.

TECH NOTE: done entirely in PS CS5, I like the new brushes for painting the background and smoothing things, but in the end I finish to use my usual brushes for most of the work. No references used, except for english wikipedia for the symbolism of set, and some random desert shoots, wich I used to make the sand texture more realistic.

Hello Erebus.
I've spent a few minutes working on this and I hope you don't mind too much: [link]

I've been looking through your gallery and you have some nice concepts and work. Your strongest are The old saw mill and the racing ones as the style you used lends its self very well to them along with the blur you've painted. You already know that you have some anatomy issues with your work, this is just solved with lots of practice. `mjranum-stock has some good full body poses which are brilliant to study from.

You have a dynamic background with the wind/sand rushing in but your character is a little stiff as he is fixed at the hip which doesn't lend its self to the power he seems to have. Try doing a series of black and white thumbnail sketches and only spend 10 minutes at most on each to try and work out poses before starting out on an image. Your choice of colour is pretty good as the undertones of purple against his skin give a sense of mystical power. Your sky and sand are a similar colour, this has worked to the advantage of your character adding to his sense of power however it has made the image look very flat and as I've been going through your gallery this is a common recurring problem. With the link I started with I quickly used the lasso tool and cut and pasted sections altering the the contrast and brightness to give depth to the landscape. Objects that are close to the viewer are usually more saturated and have a higher contrast. Objects that are further away due to atmosphere are of lower contrast with the sky and much more blurry than the foreground. The amount of focus on the foreground would be appropriate to your focal point. Clouds have depth as well but they take a long time to paint and I ran out of time, my advice would just be to use some reference and look at other peoples work

I hope that helps

Hello and thanks for the suggestions, are really appreciated!
I like constructive critiques, and I think you hit the mark of this piece.
Truly the anatomy is a bit too stiff, I have to work more on it but the majority of my works are on landscapes lately, so I don't have enough time. I really wished to have a coomics or school of art background, but my parents had different ideas for me so I had to learn all alone while doing other studies and working. ^_^
The suggestions on the background are a good point too, I often work too little on the backgrounds. That's because I see very successful paintings that are done only with an abstract background, while I try always to depict a complete scene, but then don't have enough time to work on the bg too. So probably I get a bad habit of doing something that's not enough well studied/finished like the rest of the piece, and not abstract too.
I know the general idea of sharpnes, saturation and cold/warm colors coming out or receding in the image, the problem is remembering it while finishing the piece!

Very thanks again for the critique, it's really appreciated!!! Makes me see a piece with someone else eyes and that helps a lot to improve!

Wow! Amazing work! Love it!

I was wandering if you could let me us this image for an Android game called "Kingdoms of Myth", it's turn based strategy game based on a fantasy World. You can find a little bit more info in this rough website made by my colleges [link] (Sorry for the bad English). Of course you will have full credits of your work and link to your webpage if you want

Lot of thanks for your time

Thanks,
I gave you permission for my other image, but I cannot give for this one for free projects, since is already used with non-exclusive rights in a commercial project ^_^

But you can use the other (the Greek Strategos)

Grerat artwork humanizing Seth. but isn't Seth the ruler of upper Egypt not lower?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Erebus-art In reply to seth2012chaos [2013-03-26 13:18:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, and yes, you are right: historical/mythological Set was credited as ruler of the upper Egypt because he is the Lord of the deserts.
The confusion in my description arises from the fictional mythology of my rpg, "Lords of Fate", since in that alternative version of Earth, Seth and Osiris divided Egypt differently, since Osiris was fighting the Leviathan of the Nile in prehistoric Thebe while Seth was battling the Leviathan sons in the delta of Nile

I've so confused the original myth and my "alternate version" of it ^_^

The right one is of course the one you said!

inga-larssen [2010-12-17 18:19:55 +0000 UTC]

Well, I looked through your profile and now I strongly suspect it was intentional
In any case, my asking about whether it was accidental didn't mean to hint that you didn't research the subject (I just realized it could be read that way), more like wondering if it was a VERY Jungian thing happening.

inga-larssen In reply to inga-larssen [2010-12-17 18:36:32 +0000 UTC]

And the was-scepter looks like a falcon's head. *continues staring*
That's easily the best drawing of a Egyptian god and Set in particular that I've ever seen, and I love the details so much.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Erebus-art In reply to inga-larssen [2010-12-19 00:00:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. As u have already guessed, I've painted it and put symbols in it. Some are superficial, other are hinting, other are simply there because in the world of my imagination I depicted him that way.
But for me he is almost real, I mean I can almost see it in the desert in front of me

The staff is a mix of symbols. It's the staff of Ra, the staff of sheperds, and with a Djed in it. The scythe is not a typical egyptian symbol, but the blade reminds of the war, and the blade + the head of the staff form a bird shape (wings + head) that also has some meanings...

inga-larssen [2010-12-17 17:56:40 +0000 UTC]

That is absolutely fantastic.
I wonder if you intended to draw him wearing non-Egyptian armor, which works so well, because he's a god associated with foreigners, especially at the end of the Egyptian Kingdom, and so the symbolism, since Set is essentially a warrior, aggressive and very masculine, works so perfectly... As I was saying (I'm too much into the subject and digress easily), I wonder if it was intentional or is it an inspired coincidence?

Lol, non è mica un divo del cinema, guarda le statue classiche, le hanno tutte le "maniglie", perchè il fisico asciutto estremo palestrato è una derivazione moderna, non è lo status "naturale" di un guerriero

I'm not used in putting up watermarks or other things for protecting my art, for me people can link my art as long as they give credits, but also I prefer to keep the original high resolution. Anyway the "preview" i've put up, is much larger than those usually uploaded from other artists, and is not much more smaller than the original, so you can download directly that.
As far as I can see, artists here on DA put up 900px images in download, sometime even smaller. Mine is already 900x1300px, and the original is veeeery big, If I would up the download of that, anyone can download and print is own high res copy without giving any credit
