Description Magus from Chrono Trigger.

Chrono Trigger was one of my first RPGs, and probably still one of my favourites. It was also perhaps the first game where I really noticed and appreciated the music. I guess because it was more story-driven than what I usually played, it had the potential for a larger range of moods and emotions. Chrono Cross had fantastic music too. Magus had a cool theme song and even though he wasn't one of the strongest playable characters (at least not as far as I noticed), I often liked having him as the party leader because I thought his sprites/animations (especially his floating "run") and design were cool.

In 2006, I kinda redid a Magus picture from 2002.

I thought it would be fun to redo it again to see the changes. I wasn't really crazy about doing the front view again though, or dealing with figuring out the proper lighting of having the moon behind him (those two old pictures are so wrong...). So I was thinking of a different idea and this came to me pretty quickly. The pose and angle are really simple, but I was focusing on playing with the look of the cape and hair flowing to make it more interesting.

So it's too different to be a redo now, but oh well. I originally was going to add his scythe in his left hand but after drawing the cape and kind of making it one of the main focuses of the picture, I didn't want the scythe to cover any of it.

I never understood why the sprites for Magus never matched the illustrations. The sprites have a dark blue/purple cape, while the illustrations have a dark magenta or red cape. I always thought the sprite's colour scheme looked better, but I would stick to the illustration's colours since I thought that was the "right" one and I wanted to be faithful.

But this time, screw it, I'm going with the colours that look better to me.
Though...uh...the colour I was going for got kinda lost anyway due to the colouring style. I don't know how to do dark colours in this softer colouring style while still making it look soft. I was also trying to use different colours to shade the same area. For example, not using just darker blues and lighter blues to colour a blue thing, and instead using blue as the base and throwing other colours on to make parts darker and lighter.

So the blue ultimately got lost. But now it's like between the blue/purple of the sprite and the dark magenta or red of the illustrations, so it's like I'm combining the two/finding a middle ground. That was the true form of my intention all along...mm-hmm ...

It was kind of weird at first colouring a dark character like Magus in all these light, soft colours, but I like how it turned out anyway. I tried loosely basing the colours of the background on Magus' room where you fight him, but again, it kinda got lost in the colouring style. There is still a bit of blue at the bottom from the blue flames on the floor and orange from the statue thing with the fire behind him in his room.

Nice job on the anatomy of the arm. I love the ripped cape. Very nice work!

I really do like this late colouring style of yours. it's very pleasing to the eye for me and I hope to see more of it
I like that it has so much flowiness in hair and cloak. really like wind but stylistic. works really well with the idea of him floating. The hair did turn out cool.
I feel the pic could have been even more lively if he'd have been slightly angled but it's still really good. I really like how you drew his arm. The skin colour is really nice within the pic

Thanks. I am intending to use it where I can and play with it some more. It doesn't work for all situations though, so I'll still be using other colouring methods too.

I agree that a different angle would've made it more dynamic. I was going for a focus on the cape and hair though, and I felt a side view would work best for what I had in mind. It's hard to explain why I felt that. Sometimes you just get an image in your head and try to bring it out, but can't really put it into words.
Thanks for your input!

...or is he meant to be walking? Either way, my initial comment still applies!

No, you're right, he's standing (well, floating) still.
Thanks!

I love the sense of energy and movement you got while the character is standing still!
