My first 3D render in Blender 3D. I haven't worked in 3D in a very long time. This is my first completed 3D model/render/image in over 16 years, so basically I'm starting from scratch. The stars/background is a simple high rez photo of space/Milky Way galaxy edge-on, as is the texture for the planet. Everything else, lighting, scale, bump mapping, emission, and lots of other light and texture settings took hours to learn to make it work and produce a decent looking render. Not too bad for a first try. The atmosphere looks a little too thin, the angle of the sunlight/shadows is wrong, and the planet is a bit darker and has more contrast than actual images of Mars, but it looks pretty good. I like it. Happy with the results.
