Description
This is a quick work I made for a matte painting competition a few months ago. The scene was criticized as being "physically impossible" (lmao you don't say!) so obviously it didn't win anything. Aside from that, the realistic look left me feeling that the image is lacking something, so I kept it idle on my hard drive for a while pondering what else I could do with it. Since I didn't come up with anything other than color post processing I might as well post it here and wait for reactions. The photos used in this artwork are from mattepaint.com, pixabay and pixnio.

How can they say that it's physically impossible !! God (The Bible) and Terry Pratchchett (the Discword novels) can't lie: the earth is flat !! ...
I love to see what can be the edge of the world, great picture !

Impressive view !
How dare they say this is impossible since you have a picture to prove it is ?

Physically impossible lol. It's a dream vacation spot I'd say, it's a nice scene and cool concept, and I like the idea of it being really high up.

more like the edge of the world rather than far up in the sky but either way, thanks man

In matte painting it is somewhat relevant because they are usually used for movie settings and such, and we want our movies to be immersive and realistic .
To be honest, I don't mind if people look at the city and the waterfalls both. Thanks a lot for the critique and compliment though!

haha I guess in theroy I know these things, but it's something else entirely to keep it in mind at all times.
Thanks for your critique and clarifying your points. It definitely helps to keep those things in mind while working on something new!

I think maybe there's not a direct focal point? Cropping the left might allow the eye to shift towards the waterline rather than the innermost hill.
Regarding the "physical impossibility", the beach could be read as a river if the waves were eliminated, and then the fantasy could be more "possible."
But what do I know? I dunno what I know.

Yeah some people have pointed out that it would for some reason be more plausible if the waves were gone but that really doesn't make much of a difference for me. I rather accept the fact that it is physics-defying as a whole.
Regarding the focal point, I see what you mean. This is just a plain landscape scene where the focal point is not the top priority (imagine it as a backdrop in a movie or something) so if the best solution would be to crop out half of the landscape I'd rather not do it. Thanks for the critique though!

I don't disagree on the waves being eliminated – how "real" is high fantasy supposed to be anyway? If you don't care, then we don't either. Judges, though, they be judging.
I wouldn't say cropping is the best solution! It's just the way I found a focal point. I held my hand over the monitor. : P
Thanks for responding!

Love the whole scene you created... looks like a part of semi-realistic and urban paradise who even care if it's possible or not if you know it's manipulation. Anyway, great work my friend as always, glad you get it out of your hard drive

I agree mate, indeed it is a manipulation and not the real thing.
Thanks for the compliments, glad you like it!

I would like to live in a place like this lol
Nice work mate I just believe there could be more "fog" below. (I forgot the name you use, but it's the result of the waterfall's water hitting the trees below and generating something like fog)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ErikShoemaker In reply to CaelGibran [2020-01-02 17:36:57 +0000 UTC]
I believe what you referring to is "mist"? Thing is that the trees and the waterfall are actually on the same height level with a crack in the ground separating the two areas. If the trees were indeed below the waterfall I would have added more fog/mist for sure.
Thanks for the comment & critique mate!

As a flat earther, I find this statement offensive.
