Quite a good 'Tutorial'. I'm glad you stick to the point in fact and don't try to make everythig super-easy-to-understand by either bad meme humour or sarcasm. I completely agree, I always try my best to put constructive feedback into my comments as well as a personal opinion.
I just have to cannibalize on that last couple of lines a little, don't worry, it won't hurt too much...
This can hardly be seen as a tutorial, as you actually don't teach anything with it. I'd say it is an excellent word of advise though.
Keep on eating cake!

You might have a point ( or two ) there - but I wasn't sure where else to put it at the time.
It has been there for over 6 years now - ... almost forgot about it -
I apreciate your feedback -
I have had to stop eating cake though - as I am on a mission to lose more weight in 2011 -
Enjoy the holiday season and maybe in the new year you might leave some of that constructive feedback on some of my other bits and pieces on dA -

Like anyone else I do get those "cool" or "nice" comments and sometimes when I go to write a comment on a deviation and I see a few other people have written said things, I feel as though I fit a role where I should really give it my all to make a better comment -- though that is just how I write comments.
Sometimes when I'm writing faster comments I get annoyed at myself if I did so because the person is grateful and I'm like 'not my best but no problem'
But I'm really guilty of getting into conversations with people that last quite a long time.
But I really get annoyed when I ask a question and it just doesn't get answered. I've tried spacing it out so the question clearly sticks out but it doesn't always help. Then I just feel confused that I'll never know what it was I was looking at. Of course, that doesn't happen all the time but when it does, it's a little annoying.

Wow - nice long comment there -- that warranted a visit to your gallery
And the first thing that caught my attention was the barbie arm ( [link] ) - cool - it reminded me of the movie Carrie! -
Then I looked at the sweet tooth supermarket one - I like seeing photos of supermarkets in different countries -
as a designer, I guess it is like eyecandy -- even better if it was the chips (crisps?) isle - as I collect empty chips bags -- [link] ...
I always do my best to answer questions - so - by any chance - when you browse through my gallery and have any comments / questions I will be glad to reply

Aaa cool xD
Oh yes, speaking of that movie, I was going to try and find it, hmm..
Ohh that's a really cool collection! And yeah, I think it is neat to see how things can be different in other places =]
Aaaah, now see, that's interesting, I think I'll have to proceed into your gallery now XD

Yeah - it's an oldie but a goodie -
The actual prom night scenes and the "arm part" still hold up I think -
(( I am surprised there hasn't been a remake yet - with all the horror ones being done over ))
Thnx - yeah - I guess I am a bit crazy keeping them all - hehehe -
Cool - I will look forward to all your comments-

Yeah, I've always missed the beginning of it, the times it's been on TV but I've seen the middle and end.
That is true, and a little odd they haven't re-done it...
Are you a hoarder?

I do have quite a few boxes in the garage - with all sorts of bits -
mainly because of being a graphic designer, you tend to keep all these things
for future refference...

Whenever I see a nice deviation (I see a lot ) I like to comment on it and fav, but I'm usually worried that the deviant I'm commenting will think it's annoying if I send a long comment.
I love that we are able to do these things, anything with our being!
I don't think I'm talented lol so I avoid critizism on the piece. When I comment I tend to notice the colors and the expression that sends me the feelings I get from the deviation. If I feel anything from what I see on the deviation, I tell the artist how much I appreciate it though.

wow?

I agree! WHen I first joined DA (a week ago!) I wasn't sure what the comment system was here for...I figured it was a place to critique or actually say something meaningful...after looking around for a little while I actually started thinking it was just a place to go "zomg lollers" O_o

Very nice. ^^ I quite agree, I really don't like comments that just say "cool" or "wow." -_- But what I really dislike is when people fave without commenting. I have one deviation that has a few favorites, yet absolutely no comments...it bothers me. I want to know WHY they liked it enough to fave it...I mean, sure...I know it's hard to express your feelings sometimes...but even if they were to explain that to me, it'd be better than leaving me hanging...I'm rambling. ^^ Sorry about that.
Once again, great deviation.

This is really awesome ^^
I'll fave it
I also noticed that people are saying that "I get angry when people fave without a comment..."
I dasagree on that one. What if they don't know what to say, or if the piece has 700 + comments (like HailNeko-Yasha's gallery... I love her art ), then their comment won't even be looked at.
Well... I must go off now... bye, folks =3

thnx - for the fav and your message! - I agree - -
Faving without commenting can be better sometimes - or else you need to weed through all those comments saying "this is really awesome" ===
(( I wasn't meaning you there - as I just noticed that was what you started your comment with ))
Thnx for dropping bye - I hope you arrived safely at your destination -

lol.. couldn't resist ...actually I sometimes like a piece of art and haven't got alot of time to critique it properly ... not often, but there have been times where I've digressed to 1 or 2 adjective comments. I at least like to let the artist know I've looked at it and appreciated it..thus the comment. As for favs, I've always been very liberal and used my fav gallery as a way to promote art I think is worthy of being seen.. there is another tutorial here which states you should only fav the ultimate incredible pieces of art.. I think that's horseshit.. the fav system is there to spread the art around.. not to covet the obviously incredible pieces.. but to support and spread decent works around the site and give them a bit of exposure..

Heh... Never would have thought I'd find something of yours in such a high place. (Came through the 'welcome to dA' page to this... Long story, don't ask) o_O
Very interesting read. Makes me look at all the comments that I read on other people's pages, in particular, some of the fan groups, which pieces recieve 100's of comments, but most are nothing but 'Wow' or 'cool' or such. Makes you stop and think for a few moments about the comments one has written in the past as well...

For the most part I try to leave a constructive and/or complimenting comment, but sometimes you see a pic and you want to fav it cos everything is right in it - it's the perfect picture, but haven't got anything critical to say. It also seems rude to be a silent faver, so you leave a short comment like a 'wow' or a 'great capture' or whatever.
I try not to, but shit happens.

Something more than just wow - okay, how about rad? Just kidding
I do find it ironic, though, that in an article making a point of having the comments box misused as a dialogue box, this is exactly what this article generated in it's comments box somewhere within comments 10 through to 25 (something like that)
While you make valid points in your article, you've used a lot of words, to say very little - what this entire article says is this:
1. Leave constructive comments
2. Leave comments of more than one word
3. Do not use the comments box for an ongoing dialogue
4. When asked a question, give an answer
Some ideas on how to leave constructive comments/criticisms could have been included, as many people do not have the first clue as to how to do this (I'm not one, as you can tell)
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
eRiQ In reply to Kazadoodle [2005-08-16 02:03:12 +0000 UTC]
rad... indeed...
hehehe - the whole comment tutorial was meant to be just a bit of fun - tongue in cheek,
and indeed it is amazing how it generates amounts of comments every so often ...
I wasn't really looking at supplying answers - but you are right, it would have been a good idea to add some.
Thnx for taking the time to reply - and I hope you had some fun looking through my gallery!

47ness [2005-06-26 00:45:57 +0000 UTC]
Well, on the flip side, I'm actually one of the most long-winded commentors on DA (as far as I know). ^~ You can tell from my Activity page; I also try to give the best comment I can explaining to artists why I +Fav'd their respective works (since they, of all people, deserve to know what they did right).
The logic behind all this is to invite others to write more as well. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't. ^.^ (I've gone as far as to set nearly all my deviations to Advanced Critique Encouraged just to get more thoughts out of people who would otherwise be too afraid of being rude/offensive with their comment) ;รพ
One other tactic, although colder, is to simply IGNORE people who give you +Fav and/or one-word comments. Don't even visit their account. Chances are they're the kind of people who can't take their elbow off the Fav Button (-figure of speech, only ^~) and tend to marginalize the significance and individuality of your work as well as the work of countless other deviants.
>>Frankly, I clench my teeth every time I see a deviant who has 20,000+ pageviews and didn't really do much to deserve it other than kiss a lot of butt. Sadly, that alone is a good enough reason to stand up and demand change (if anything, that just makes one sound like a jealous crybaby ^^). However, you worded in a way that makes for a strong argument that just about everyone can support. :3
The whole "super-popular" phenomenon (where the same handful of deviations have +Fav's that are 50ร more than the actual comments) is ultimately a by-product of people forgetting the fundemental values of being on this site (or they were simply never taught this). Good for you, eRiQ, for doing what you can to keep the tradition of discourse and mindful critique alive ~ for as long as it takes until the many other people on this site come to understand as well.
(I'm done. Hehe, this is like an average-sized comment for me. XD XD XD)
๐: 0 โฉ: 2
eRiQ In reply to 47ness [2005-10-11 04:13:52 +0000 UTC]
wow! - that was a long read indeed - great comment and thnx for sending it,
and even typing my name right! (eRiQ) ---
It's amazing the amount of people who indeed have extreme high PV's and only minimal work to show for it.
I am sure they use one of those webpage autohits kinda sites that ticks along ever so nicely when online .... mmm
(or am I too paranoid)
I am looking forward to more comments of your caliber once you cruise through my gallery! Let me know!!!
