Description Finally was able to get some of my more recent images scanned. Been experimenting with different mediums and paper. Here we have a private and a junior officer of the 3rd Missouri US Infantry Regiment, which were raised under the command of Nathaniel Lyon in the early days of the Civil War in Missouri. They drew their recruits almost exclusively from German American immigrants, many of whom were refugees from the revolutions of 1848, having fled to what was at the time the only nation with representative self elected government. Despite the frequent abuses they suffered from their "nativist" neighbors, German Americans seemed to be among the most patriotic recruits the United States Army received during the war, with German Americans becoming the largest ethnic group represented in the service, with the Irish being a close second. This regiment would see service all throughout Missouri in 1861, with the climax of their service coming on August 10th, 1861, near a stream known as Wilson's Creek.
