Description title, keyword and description... geez this is getting tedious.

tediousartDOTcom

Non 3d users start here- I'm testing a new lighting technique that is achieving nice results but taking forever to accomplish. The model is old but he's very photogenic.

3d users start here- This took over an hour to render with Cinema. No post was necessary this time, I was fairly satisfied with the raw render. I need more memory to render some of the scenes I've been setting up with this type of lighting. Those images will be released late November - early December when I upgrade my desktop. For information on this render technique visit this page [link] . Note:: This link is directed to Cinema users but users of other applications may find useful information regrarding HDRI.

I really like the way hdri rendering exposes reflections. It's very realistic. Fairly simple materials were used for this image but the lighting really brings them alive. HDRI images also work well with bump textures and scenes that include water. If you're an abstract 3d artist, hdri could be an indespensible techinique.

I'm starting to be a fan of hdri myself. I just recently found a page talking about 3dsmax and it's support of hdri. but either way, nice stuff.
maybe you answered already in your comments but I haven't read them yet, is it just a reflection map or is it raytracing and some other sort of lighting? there's very obviously self-reflection and self-shadowing but it also looks like a radiosity render. am I missing something or were you just not specific enough? heh.

also, I was very much inspired by the hdri work done for the movie the time machine, some gorgeous imagery was put together with it, and they used an in-house system to actually print the processed film in a higher range of colors than normal digital to print because apparently film has alot higher gammut than normal digital processing and they used hdri to take advantage of this.

anyway, I'm being really verbose, looks really nice. good work.

hey eth! i too have begun to explore the beauty of hdri lighting. I love the reflective realism it brings to our creations. Have you had a chance to explore softimage xsi. i currently feel as if this is the most powerful tool at our disposal. it however does require some serious pc power. but for unsurpassed power in both modeling and texturing it is definitely worth the effort to try to build a xsi capable system. i feel that you would benefit from its power.

... like `w00zy said... "ethan 0wnage" ...

... I've never used Cinema before, but the sharp imagery achieved with it just blows me away... looks like you can make it dance in your hands if you wanted to... this is synaptic meltdown at its best...

... and I thought Brazil was cool when it first came out... sheesh

Yep, I love that lighting effect, the reflections and all, very realistic, if there was a blurred image of a store or factory or something brightly lit in the background I'd probaly think it was a photo of some prototype toy or robot or something.

No shit, HDRI? Awesome. I'm glad to see someone finally taking advantage of the technology. I was a dev on HDRIE, an open source HDR Image Editor (a free alternative to HDRShop), last year. It'll be going 1.0 soon, I believe; Don, the lead dev, is busy with another time-sensitive project, but he's got most of it together by now.

If you're interested, send me a note, and I can let you know when HDRIE is released. Great model, by the way.
