Description Well, this is the Goblin finally rendered with it's skin on.
The skin texture was polypainted in Zbrush. And the whole scene was rendered in ZBrush also.
I love Mental ray, but this time I wanted to try something new, so I decided to render him in ZBrush. I've render simple, quick shots of my models before within ZB, but never had the chance to really get into it, and see what kind of quality renders I could get out of the program. So for me this was the first time attempting a render of this nature. After a couple of days learning, and tinkering around with the settings I finally got something worth showing. I have to say that although not perfect, I am pretty happy with the results.

I welcome comments!

Excellence and perfection are two different things, the latter don't exist. You can quote me on that. Excellent sculpt and texturing man. That is something really worth showing.

Great detail! You seem very much better acclimated to zbrush than I. If you have the time can you note or msg me a very short explanation of how to export displacement maps from zbrush back to maya (i just got the new zbrush + never used it much, just don't know where I should start) or perhaps a good tutoria linkl? Thanks for your time and amazing work!

Nickolas,

Thank you so much for your kind words, I truly appreciate them!
As far as an explanation on how to export displacement maps from ZB, here's a couple of links that may help you out. They're threads I posted explaining these procedures to a similar question that a friend of mine asked me a few a weeks ago. I hope they're relevant to your question. I hope you get something useful out of them.

Well, thank you so very much!
I am glad you like it. Yeah, the render was a new thing for me. It didn't really came out as I wanted it, but it's close enough. I need more practice with the rendering part of ZB, though!

Great great work man, the skin is looking really nice. If anything, maybe the sss on the ears/nose can be improved? Maybe its my monitor ;/

You using a triple or quad shader mat?

Post your render settings on the modifiers if you have spare time (fat chance I know lol)

I love this thing though, well done.

Thanks man! I am glad you liked it.
You might be right about the sss effect. I had it cranked up a bit more than it is now but he looked like, red-nose the reindeer, so I decided to tone it down. Maybe it's still to high.

I used a quad shader material, but only used three of the slots at the end.

Let me see if I can find the settings for the shaders, unfortunately with ZB you can't save your materials in nodes as you would in Maya. I may have some of them that were saved with some of the sculpt iterations I made while I was working on it. I'll keep you posted.

The textures look awesome and the ZBrush render looks great as well.

One minor remark: Compared to the face, the neck looks too young. The skin of the neck tends to "age" quite early and becomes wrinkly, saggy and such.

EtherealProject In reply to aerilworks [2011-06-24 18:23:04 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your kind words!

I think you might be right about the neck, I did texture the neck with wrinkles, but didn't sculpted them as deep as they could probably have been done. On top of that I think the depth of field effect has made the neck look even smoother, thus taking away from the already subtle wrinkling. Good Point, and duly noted!!
Thank you for the constructive crit!

You are welcome I'm trying to learn ZBrush as well, but you are much better. And by reviewing my work, I noticed that my old Vampire's neck is too smooth as well

You're work is looking great, just keep on practicing. I've been working with ZB for a couple of years now, but I am still learning new things about it everyday. It's always good to review ones work once in a while. I do it all the time, and frankly it drives me nuts as I tend to find mistakes that I couldn't see before. But in the end it helps us grow. Keep up the good work man!
