And pounded the earth between the stone facings to make it stable. But I saw recently someone had poured concrete between the crenellations in a section of it.

The documentary that I watched recently showed the concrete had failed, and that's what led them to study the ancient mortar. That's when they discovered they had used rice in the mortar. Pretty amazing.
