Cockatrices are related to both basilisks and phoenixes. They are considered the "transitional" stage between basilisks and phoenixes, equally reptilian and avian, compared to basilisk's more reptilian traits, and phoenix's more avian. Said to be able to kill with just a stare, it is thought that they were cursed by a demon or wizard of some sort.
