Description
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, and !NOTE: This is not my version of jumping on the Snape bandwagon. Why?
A) It's being overdone to death; Snape was never that cuddly. I mean, come on, there's a reason Lily married James.
B) My mom is one of my most trusted critics and hasn't read the book yet, so no shpoilers for her.
Anywho! This is my first male Harry Potter character that I've drawn. We had just happened to watch HP5 (for my fourth time; I'm not one to say "no" to an opportunity like that when it arises.
Don't ask me why it's taken me five movies to realize both of the aforementioned facts about Snape in the movies.
The way I've drawn him is closer to what I see his actual age as. In the books he's only, what, in his forties? But Mr. Rickman is again such an awesome Snape that I can forgive him for being a few years older than that.
EDIT:
M'kay, so the only other actor I might possibly see playing Snape is Jeremy Irons. And whaddya know, he's, er, actually played the part!

Oh! This is actually another of my infamous Sunday sketches. But it turned out so perfectly I didn't dare re-draw it on bigger paper.
Anywho!

I swear I hadn't even read your artist's description before I thought, "Wow, that looks like a young-Snape."
O_O
Anyways, the point being-you did a great job! I think this drawing captures just the right emo-ness and resemblance of Snape :3
And I'm really jealous of his hair xD haha

I've always liked this drawing, thanks for drawing.

You have done an absolutely amazing job portraying Severus, miss Your sketches/drawings are always a treat!
And I agree, Severus really wasn't ever a cuddly-wuddly teddy bear and I don't think he was in a viably 'good' place (principle or otherwise) until much later in his life, after long collaboration with Dumbledore. What's more, he still payed homage to his bias (not entirely unfounded) against James by giving his son such a horrible time...
He wasn't the best man, but he was a good man in the end and I'm glad that we achieved some degree of decency and redemption in the end because, let's face it, he was an ASS! XD
your sketchy-goodness!

Yay! Someone else sees Snape the way I do! There's far too much the-end-justifies-the-means kinds of folks on here... Snape was a pain in the butt, joined the Death Eaters, and only pulled out because the girl he liked was killed by Voldy. Mind you, it was because he leaked the stinkin' prophecy to the Dark Lord, which caused him to go after Lilly in the first place. I am glad he redeemed himself somewhat in the end, but still.

Hahahahaha XD I relate very much to the Severus in the last book, his relationship to Lily and his twisted devoution, I understand it. But, I recognize what Severus used to be and remained as for a long, long time. But, I also relate wonderfully to Hermione, Luna, Dumbledore, Harry... each one of them in very big ways, so I can take a very balanced and... sane look at his character.
Yes, Severus was an absolute dick for a vast majority of his life... what he fought for was noble and beautiful, but his motivations were... well, less-than impressive. He was selfish, plain and simple, at the start but he got better in the end.
Oh well, he was an incredibly complex character with more bad points than good, but he was fascinating for it all... but I know what you mean about the Snape-obsessed fangirls/boys hereabouts XD A lot of people could do with a good dose of reality and reason on some matters.

That's another thing I think that made so many people read J.K. Rowling's books: the characters were real in the sense that they were very human, with multiple factors and layers that affected their actions.
Uuuuughh... I just wish more people would figure out that Lilly married James. XP

DogmaticKerr In reply to euclidstriangle [2007-10-06 04:29:52 +0000 UTC]
XD Very true... James may not have been a whole lot better than Severus in school, but I think that a certain degree of stupid immaturity is expected in kids... which is something that I think Rowling captured perfectly in her books. Yes, the characters were multi-faceted and dynamic, which gave them depth and, of course, made them incredibly interesting.
Yeah... Severus and Lily together? Whoa... I think Severus would have needed a serious belief/principle system overhaul and personality transplant before that would have been even remotely possible. That's one of the things about him I could associate with... the absolutely hopeless and impossible love he carried with him for his best friend.

Severus, I hate to say it, needed something drastic to happen to clean him up. T'is a shame it had to happen to Lilly, but I'm pretty sure nothing else would have had such an impact on him. Alas, the last time I had a boyfriend was in kindergarten, so I can't really relate in such a way to the characters...

DogmaticKerr In reply to euclidstriangle [2007-10-07 00:09:04 +0000 UTC]
Very true... even when Lily was targeted, even when she was killed, Severus didn't change his tune much, if at all... while he did act in honor of her memory and even protected Harry in memory of Lily, he was still very childish, selfish about it for a while. I really loved the chapter (33 was it?) in which you got to see so many of his memories, from beginning to end, you can see how he changed in his interactions with Albus, even going so far as to tell Phinius (sp?) not to refer to Hermione as a mudblood.
I think you're right about how nothing else would have impacted him so forcefully and deeply, because I think Lily was the only thing, the only person that he ever loved.
Well, don't let me give you the wrong impression, I've never had a girlfriend, but I have loved a handful of people, friends long gone now, so very deeply and, in the end, so hopelessly and pointlessly, that I know all too well what it's like to be in such a position. The funny thing is though, I have probably loved the friends in my life far more deeply and completely than a lot of people have ever loved their girlfriends or boyfriends, or more.

The chapters where you finally see his life are golden. Probably some of the best in the entire series, by far.
T'is good to have friends one can care for so much, and sad when things don't work out. Even worse when you know you won't get a chance to make it up to them at any point in this life...
That's another thing that made Snape a tragedy.
