Description
Years ago I tried to recreate the scene from the Star Trek TAS episode "How Sharper Than a Serpents Tooth". Back then I was not so happy with it, so here is a new try.
Freely adapted from the Star Trek The animated series (TAS) Episode "How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth" in which the USS Enterprise encounter Kukulkan, a ancient being and the last of his species. He travels in a spaceship equipped with an holographic device which mask it as an giant winged snake.
Kukulkan was a being of immense power, he comes from a race that was spacefaring and powerful before humanity even discovered fire. Lonely, he traveled to Earth to teach the civilizations there peaceful ways, so they would not go the way of his own once-destructive civilization.
On his visit, he was instrumental in the technological and architectural advances of the Egyptian, Mayan, and Aztec civilizations. He also taught them new techniques in art and agriculture. He hoped that they would combine this knowledge to complete Kukulkan's city and live in peace.
Kukulkan's visit to Earth is manifested in history by legends of a winged serpent creature that came from the sky bringing knowledge. These records were available in the library computer of the USS Enterprise.
He has also been identified with the lore of Quetzalcoatl, as well as the legend of the Chinese dragon.
In 2270, Kukulkan sent a space probe to Earth, but he was angry to find that humanity was more brutal and warlike. When Captain Kirk and his crew aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise encounter Kukulkan, he traps the vessel and tests the humans to see if they should be destroyed. Eventually, Kirk and the others convince him that his children are grown and seeking peace in their own ways, and he departs with the knowledge that his long-ago teachings may have helped humanity after all.

The eternal frustration: Star Trek TAS did things not possible with the live show, such as this scene, yet was both looked down upon for being animated, being for kids, while still being too expensive for the time to be done right.Β
Nowadays could probably be done right as an SFM over any other mainstream media animation, and yet SFM itself is looked down upon while anything else would be too expensive.Β Β Β

Doctor, I did a take on Kukulkan himself back when I was doing Nova Trek. I never dealt with the episode, just a one shot pic:

I use the 3d model of Smite's version of Kukulkan.
But the depiction of the "real" god were always in this liking. A feathered winged snake.

If I remember right, the idea behind the TAS was they wanted to do visually what they couldnβt do with the live show. It was interesting how they handled it back then, but the episodes in my opinion still had the feel of the show, but with more creative effort for the aliens. Ive been curious how hey might have done with some of the tech today for movies and TV. They had good writers for the most part, but were limited on the show because of the tech back then.

Nice work

Very cool work, Thomas!Β This is the one series I couldn't get in to.Β I think if they would have used all the original actors from TOS, it would have made the difference for me, but they didn't.Β Β

Thank you!
Yeah, TAS was a chapter for itself. I needed a long time to view it, because the german translation was a pure destaster. Only when I was able to watch it in English for the first time it did got better. (On its own level)

You are so welcome Thomas.Β It would really be so handy if we had a "Universal Translator" wouldn't it?Β Of course many times I use a translation program to comment art from artist's who use other languages in their descriptions and comments.Β It takes a few minutes longer but to me it is worth it.Β One of the things I love about this site is that through art we overcome all kinds of barriers that exist in the "real world".Β I think that is amazing and so wonderful.Β

The joy of a teacher and/or a parent is not that they had imparted knowledge and experience to the young, but to see them grow up. To become not just as enlightened and wise, but reach even further and greater on their own using what they start with.
Kukulkan must had been ecstatic to see, at least in the Trekverse, that his students and adoptive children had chosen to take his lessons to heart.Β
